Ok I got it working

So before I was taking a video on my iPhone 12 Pro and then going to my iMac where the video would be automatically synced using iCloud. Then exporting the .MOV file onto my Synology NAS and playing from my LG OLED 2019 C9 TV. Using various app's on the TV or even Airplay directly from the iPhone it just WOULDN'T work

So to make it work ......

I took a video 4K 60fps HDR and saved the file directly to my iCloud share from the iPhone. Cutting out the iMac and Photos app. I then copied the .mov file from my iCloud drive to my Synology NAS and BOOM. When playing in either the LG native media player or Plex the DV icon is top right on the screen and works

Using the mediainfo application I can see the video has HLG now

Found this pic (and the video) in a russian forum. Looks like the C9 plays it as DoVi.

Correct I got it working....see my post above...

I just realized when you play the video back on “Photos” app of Apple TV, the video is recognized as “HDR” though still not as DV.

TV is LG Oled 2017 (C7) Model.

Great thread, quite informative.

Thanks to @iAdamator for the tips on not setting the TV to output dolby vision full time. Just got a DV capable TV for the first time this week and really wouldn't have known otherwise.

thanks guys. That’s the damnest thing. My videos from the photos app on the Apple TV just won’t play in HDR. I also for some reason have all the videos I’ve recorded on my new phone show up twice in the photos app. There is 2 of all my recent video but both play back exactly the same.

Are you on the Apple TV public betas? Which version of iOS 14 are you running?

iPhone 12 Pro: My 2015 (original) iPad Pro couldn’t play the HDR videos I airdropped to it. I was wondering when it would show signs of “obsolescence “ after many years of handling just about anything thrown at it. A workaround was to import the video into iMovie on the device. That works, but I’m not sure the final output is full resolution.

Airdropped to an iPad Mini 5. It played them perfectly.

I airdropped the same videos to a late model Mac mini. It plays them no problem, though the monitor being an older Apple Thunderbolt display is not 4K. Still looks great to my amateur eyes.

Later, I attempted to airplay to my Apple TV 4K... and that opened up the can of settings worms described previously in this thread. My 65” LG TV isn’t top of the line but is 4K. After fiddling with a few combinations of settings, the videos played, but not smoothly.

Finally, I turned off HDR in the camera settings and a video airdropped to the old iPad Pro did play nicely. For me, HDR isn’t ready for primetime on all my devices.

I am on whatever the latest update issued has been. I got off BETAS a while ago.

I decided to wipe my Apple TV last night and set it back up. Didn’t help my issue but still cleaning up some other stuff on my Apple TV at least.
So just to be clear your Apple TV will trigger your tv to play in hdr when you play a new hdr video from the photos app from your Apple TV? And you see that HDR badge in the corner of your tv screen pop up?

Whnever I have played videos from the photos app, it always blanks the screen for a moment. I don’t know it’s it’s changing resolution or what but it has always done that. It does it now too of course. My tv does that for these new videos of course but still no HDR being triggered.

My wife has the newer SE. I airdropped one of my HDR videos to her and when I played it on her phone it would play just fine but it did not have the little HDR badge in the top left corner of the video on in camera roll denoting it as such like they show on my iPhone 12 Pro. I then updated her to 14.1 and now any video I sent her in HDR does ID as HDR in her camera roll.

Problem is Apple advertised DV as a major feature to IP12 to stream to ATV...and nobody is able to do so on a plethora of diff TV models that have DV. This is an issue for me as a consumer because that was the feature I was most interested in since they said its the only device capable of it... well clearly its not and to me its a flat out lie.

So you believe Apple made stuff up and flat out lied? Or possible there is so much variation in implementation that some of this is outside of Apples' control?

Perhaps I should not have used the word lied. Can I switch it for Mismanaged Information?

Same here. I can’t get my LG B9 from 2019 to trigger Dolby Vision via AirPlay of my IPhone 12 Pro.
I don’t have an ATV 4k to test it that way.
The HDR videos, which I AirPlay to my tv look very bad by the way, with crippled Frame Rates and so on.
My WiFi is top notch, so that can’t be the reason.

I have exactly the same problem with my LG E9, if I put the file on a USB stick the DV comes up, but via ArPlay nothing :-( such a shame as i was looking forward to watching my videos via AirPlay instead of having to transfer them first. Very disappointed.

Same here with my C9

Perfect if copied to NAS or USB but no good via airplay app

I also have some weird frame clipping when playing the video back on other devices

Well thats good. At least we now know that the videos are actually being created in DV and can be play back in some shape or form to a TV. Hope fully there is an Air Play and/or Apple Tv update so we can use this feature as advertised. Let's just hope it doesnt turn into a Apple did the update now we have to wait for TV manufacturers to do the same so Apple Tv and TV sets play nicely.
