They expect you pay to play in the Hearthstone Arena? I think not...

no. you get a daily every day which if you complete gives you gold. that daily can be reset by declining it in case you don't like it. you can accumulate up to three dailies... so what some people do is only log into hearthstone once every 3 days... complete the dailies and log out.

if you play casual or ranked, you get 10 gold per three wins, to a maximum of 100 gold (this doesn't include daily) each day. but this takes a lot of time which no one likes to do besides twitch streamers.

when you have 150 gold, do not spend it on a pack... because if you use your 150 gold for one single arena run, you get refunded back in gold, pack and dust and sometimes golden (foil) cards.

you only have to win 3-4 times in arena to be refunded an equal amount. 1 pack = 100 gold + 25 dust and 25 gold or 50 dust/gold = 150 gold worth

if you win more than 3-4 times... (maximum wins is 12) you get higher rewards, sometimes you can win up to 500 gold... always spend your gold on arenas, never on packs.

also you should play ranked up to level 20 every month so you get a new card back at the end of the month. for example today is the 5th... if you rank up to level 20... on june 1st you will receive a "ninja" card back.

also if you play rank and win 500 games using one single class... your hero portrait becomes animated and your hero power turns into gold.

if you truly want to brag, get a deck you like, make it all gold, make it so your class becomes gold.. and your enemy will be like "dayyyyyyyyyyuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmm"

that's about it. also don't spend gold on goblins vs gnomes and black rock mountain... use real cash... the gold/cash ratio isn't worth it.

Thanks for the info!

When I pulled up the Arena first time, it was free. I lost all three games, but actually got some gold. But on the second attempt all I saw was a charge of $1.99 (or $2.99)? Next time I save $150, I'll check the Arena again. Does ranked vs casual have any different effect on your matches, other than tracking them?

If I have a concern, it is that people are investing in packs (paying $$) are crafting based on hardcore participation and end up with advantages, that my impression is not part of the game's matchmaker, just what your toon is ranked at. I've been in some matches were I am seriously outclassed in cards.

I've looked through several links on crafting. The situation is that there are some nifty cards out there, but I'm not familiar with all of them or how much dust it would require to make them. I assume crafted cards are limited to existing official cards. In other words you can't craft a unique card only cards found in the official database. I found this Database of Cards but it is hard to navigate, say I want to browse Mage cards. And I don't see info regarding the amount of arcane dust required to craft them. Any pointers appreciated. :)

I think you are looking at this game way to deep, just dive in and play, enjoy.

You are doing what I got involved in with RPGs, looking up best this best that, what if, is that right, did I do this wrong etc etc etc, I ended up not really enjoying the games I was playing and not wanting to play them.

Go and enjoy the game, OK, so to start with you lose a few, I did and still do but less so, I enjoy the games I play :)

I'm not. I'm trying to figure out how to craft cards, as I'd like to have a more effective deck, competing with others who are doing the same thing. :p However, I have no desire to be a Hearthstone heavy hitter. I read a blurb that it might not be a good idea to disenchant duplicate cards until you plan on crafting a new card. Not sure why though.

Do you play casual or ranked?

Both.

i already said what rank does.

as for cards... you can craft them all, except the adventure cards (naxxramas, black rock mountain) and the basic cards which you get from playing every class to level 10. the levels after that just reward you with golden versions of those basic cards.

i got mixed up a bit, goblins vs gnomes isn't an adventure... its an expansion, you need to either craft those cards or pay money for packs (make sure to select those packs and not classic packs if this is what you want)

like i said (i always have to repeat when it comes to huntn) *shrugs* lol, play arena so you can get gold, packs and dust... using your gold from dailies. you'll eventually get good at arena and get higher rewards. use the site i linked you.

it's a card game, so the cards play themselves... you might get a net deck that is rated highly and has a 70% chance win rate... but the other 30% is you waiting up to turn 5 just to drop a single minion on the board... which is not your fault... its completely up to the RNG gods (random number generator)

this is why i stopped playing this game myself, i got sick of losing some games just because i wasn't getting the cards i needed... i felt like the game was playing for me. you have absolutely no control as to which card you draw next, and not only that but some opponents you will face have complete counter decks... which just puts you to shame. think of warcraft... if you play mage and you see a death knight in pvp, all you can do is stand there and watch yourself die (the mage that is) since in WoD range sucks in pvp... melee counters all range... that type of "balance" isn't fun to me. watching myself make a deck only to face an opponent who made a deck to counter mine is just... i understand thats how the game is supposed to work so people can win but i mean geez... what am i supposed to do besides watch myself waste my time and concede? literally 0 chance to win against counter decks.

i have over 1000 wins, but i had enough (the section where it shows dailies shows you how many wins you had total)

just my opinion though... 30 million people are playing that game.

ps: i like games where i have options to win... like starcraft... or heroes of the storm... but wow pvp and hearthstone is a painful experience. you can watch hearthstone streamers on twitch who consider themselves top notch, skilled at hearthstone (that makes absolutely no sense since its an RNG game) but anyways, when they get countered or when the opponent has all the answers... they rage... they keep saying even mentally challenged people can win in this game if the cards favor them. but when they win? they are skilled. *shrugs*

Soulsyphon, you are not the only person whose opinion I value or seek. I'll suggest that if my questions to other people bother you then put me on ignore and stay happy. :p

that opinion was meant for everyone... and it is just that, an opinion.

and i was wrong, there isn't 30 million hearthstone players... there's 30 million hearthstone accounts... blizz did not state how many are playing each month.

the thing i hate is that whenever i go on a rage quit on blizzard games, i can't seem to find anything else to play... like most of the steam library is just trash.

meh, first world problems.

Just a minor addition to this, but there are also two Reward cards that cannot be crafted and are instead gifted for completing a subset of cards- Old Murk Eye is rewarded for completing the Murloc card set and Captain's Parrot is rewarded for completing the Pirate set. There's also two cards that can only be obtained via crafting, Gelbin Mekkatorque and Elite Tauren Chieftain, and their golden versions were only available as gifts from participating in the beta and attending Blizzcon respectively.

If you go into "My Collection" and click on Crafting Mode in the bottom right hand corner, you'll be shown the full collection of craftable cards. Clicking on cards will show you their crafting cost (and disenchanting cost- you can get rid of non-soulbound cards you don't want or have extra copies of for extra dust) and let you craft copies if you can afford them :)

Thank you. I'll report back. :)

randomness is just one part of the game. you have to tame it.

for example a tip for deck building:

you better have a good amount of 2 cost minions because those early turns are crucial. but how many?

you draw 3 cards when you go first, you can mulligan all of them. you draw a card on your first turn. that's 7 draws in a 30 card deck. let's say you have 6 2-cost minions. 83% chance you get one. with 5 it's 76%. with 4 it's just 67%.

that's one way how great decks are fine tuned.

another tip would be to play it safe:

let's say you have 3 mana, a 2 cost minion and a 2 cost unstable portal in your hand. (Add a random minion to your hand. It costs (3) less.)

it might be tempting to play the unstable portal but it could give u a 1 cost minion or a 5+ cost minion. better play it safe and go for the 2 cost minion.

one last example with madder bomber:

Battlecry: Deal 6 damage randomly split between all other characters.
this is best played when you have fewer minions(targets) than your opponent.

probably obvious but still demonstrates that you can and should maximise a random effect to your advantage. if you can do that consistently then your win % will be higher than average.

again, this is just one part of the game. deck strategy/synergy is extremely important.

This is very much dependent on the style of deck you're playing. As a general rule early and mid game focussed decks will load up on turn 1-3 minion plays, while late game oriented decks will forgo having too many early game minions in favour of more removal options and late game threats. favourite decks right now are my control-oriented Patron Warrior which uses a pair of Armorsmiths as its only one-drop or two-drop minions, and Fatigue Druid which has zero at either cost. It's more about making sure your curve is appropriate for the deck archetype than necessarily having a set number of minions at each mana cost :)

unfortunately you missed the point. it really doesn't matter what numbers i used. i could have used 7 cost cards and i wasn't talking about specific deck types.

also patron warrior additionally uses cruel taskmaster and unstable ghoul.

I started playing Hearthstone again on my phone (i participated in closed beta on the computer a while back). I'm having a tough time. I can easily beat the Beginner Practice guys, like where i kill them without taking any damage sometimes, but i get destroyed by the Expert practice guys. I also almost always get beat with the Casual Play opponents. Twice today i've gotten my opponent down to 6 health while i still had 24-25 health and have had them come back to win because i run out of cards and only get dealt weak, low point cards (and end the turn with still 5+ gems) while they get endless strings of high level taunters.
I'm guessing its my deck building or my luck (probably both)

use the links i posted to netdeck. which is the term card players use for when they go online to copy a deck. if you don't have the cards you need, spend some money or play arena with gold.

My experience was if I just tried to put together a deck, knowing little about the game, I got my ass handed to me regularly. I can't overemphasis how helpful the links I posted (back on the first page) are for basic decks. Not only excellent starter decks, but info on combos, relationships, strategy, and upgrades. My win rate shifted significantly for the good! :)

I read a blurb that it might not be a good idea to disenchant duplicate cards until you plan on crafting a new card. Not sure why though.

Normally it costs much more dust to create a card (4X or so, depending on rarity) than you get back for disenchanting it.

But occasionally, Blizzard nerfs (i.e. changes negatively) certain cards if they feel they have balance issues. When this happens they allow such cards to be disenchanted for the FULL dust value - a really good deal!

This has happened in the past with cards like Unleash the Hounds, Pyroblast, Leeroy Jenkins, and Gadgetzan Auctioneer.

That's why it can be better to hold duplicates until you actually need their dust to create a new card. There's a small chance that their dust value could go higher in the event of a nerf.

Like pretty much any card game, there is an element of chance to Hearthstone. Even the best players can not win every game. And may even lose occasionally to a player with significantly less skill.

But in the end, it's all about win rate. Smarter, more skilled and experienced players will yield higher win rates than less skilled players, even if they're playing exactly the same decks. And a few percentage points difference in win rate can mean the difference between making legendary or not in a season.
