I started smoking when I was 15. I quit 5 days ago at the age of 65.
Went cold turkey thanks to a hospital visit for a really bad flare up from COPD.

Now I’m home resting with breathers and pills.

Fisrt thing I did was throw away anything smoking related. Ash trays,lighters,smokes.Everything.

Day 5 and going on never again.

I didn’t smoke so long in life. Maybe ~10 yrs.
Amazingly enough I played football on a pretty high level during that time.
It was quite a few in the teams I played in that was really good, even played in national team, that were smoking.
We did a oxygen consumption test in school and I had best results in the school while I was smoking.
Had another friend later that played in the National team, she had even better results then me, and she was a heavy smoker. Wonder how good she had been without a smoking habit?

Anyway, it was due to a lot of changes for a young girl that I adopted that habit. A mom that died when I was 10. A father who was drinking. So I moved away from home at 15. Fortunately well financially equipped from my mom.

Maybe kept smoking maybe ~10yrs before I decided I rather kept on with yoga etc and wanted to improve in the breathing techniques and meditation I was learning, rather then smoking.
We seem to repress psychological things with whatever unhealthily habits we adopt.
So, when I stopped smoking the relationship I was in, that also were a smoker, ended too.

Maybe it didn’t caught much damage to my lungs, never felt a lot of that.
But I went into therapy too also later, and the things I had repressed with smoking became obvious.

Good luck and stay strong in leaving unhealthy habits. Life is valuable.

How are you feeling? After 30 years of trying, it took a hospital scare to prompt my Dad to stop smoking for good, cold turkey. That was 15 or so years ago, he turned 90 this year. You will be successful! :)

Well let’s see.

As far as smoking I am doing fine. No desire to smoke again. I do admit I get the urge but the feeling of smothering to death overcomes that.

For anyone that doesn’t know that’s how emphysema combined with asbestosis makes you feel.

For anybody reading this thread. If you smoke please quit before this happens to you.

That sounds like a huge motivator. My wife’s sister is a big smoker and drinker (functional alcoholic) and looks old enough to be my wife’s mother. :(

I smoked some more after i started this thread , but i am going to try to quit once again .
This time i don't want to do it again anymore .
No more tobacco for the rest of my life .

By now i know that this is a medical condition which needs to be treated .
The only thing that kills my craving is a chewing gum called nicotex .

I have two packs of the chewing gum nicotex with me right now ,
So the treatment starts now .

One last try .

This time i am not going to fail .

I am not my slip-ups , mistakes or shortcomings .Disappointment in myself is a place to visit , but not to live .

Hi, Merry! Well, best of luck in quitting! I smoked for about 30 years, of and on and finally quit about 16 years ago for good. It takes a good amount of willpower to do it, but the payoff is well worth it. If you have a hard time quitting cold turkey, I might suggest using a nicotine patch to step yourself down. I used them successfully and they did help immensely to curb the cravings. I used a brand called Nicoderm CQ, they are a small, clear patch and come in two dosages so you can wean yourself down. I used the higher dosage for a couple of months to break the smoking habit then just flat out quit. In the end all the helpers mean very little if you don't have the will to quit. Stick to it and stand fast! Best of luck!

Whatever you do, don't take up vaping as a way to half-quit with promises to quit that someday too. Just go cold turkey and use gum or patches if you need extra help.

If you've been smoking for the three years, don't worry, you are not gonna die, that's short period.

But, right now, is the best time to stop.

I ditched the cigs for good after 10 years of smoking. First I transitioned to e cigs, then after brief period of vaping, I said to myself WTF am I even doing, I do not need this crap". something clicked in my head, and I quit vaping too.

It was harsh for the several few weeks. Not too horrible whole time, but there are short periods, during which you would go crazy. But they last very short, and then they fade.

After few weeks, these effects are getting weaker and weaker. You finally start to feel better, and realize how much of a waste of everything smoking is.

To this day, I never lit a cig, and I do not feel any wish to do so.

I do not know what advice to give you, I did it cold turkey. But, if you have will, you can do it. I did it, many people did it, and therefore, you can do it.

If the will is not there, all talk and attempts to boost your courage are in vain.

If you want to quit, YOU CAN QUIT!

Telling him not to worry is not helping.
To the OP, worry and see a doctor.

There are medications other than non-tobaco-nicotine that help with the cravings (even rTMS seems to help, but the evidence here is flimsy still). Visit a pneumologist and tell him to help you quit smoking, there might even be free quit smoking clinics in your area; they are frequently associated with pneumology university centers.

Good luck!
