Makes no big difference to Apple if the original box is not returned. The computer will be subsequently sold as a refurbished unit and those are not sold in the original boxes.
Obviously the box makes a return more convenient and avoids having to explain its absence, but it will only get thrown out anyway when the machine is refurbished.

For what it's worth, and I'm not sure if this is widespread practice or just my store, but I called ahead and asked if they had the new 13" MBP's, and was told yes. Went to the store, and all the ones on display were the old ones (and old 15/17's). Figured I'd test to see what happened if I simply asked for a new MBP. sure enough, they gave me a 2.26ghz one. I saw the specs on the side of the box and said " no,no, the new MBP"...the guy looked at me, said oh yea we have those...and got the other box. Shady? I thought so...I mean, i understand wanting to get rid of old inventory, but the methodology just seems a bit wanting...

No wonder it was a no questions asked exchanged.

that's great news!

when i went to the apply store, i stressed the NEW mbp's so much that they definitely got the point. but they were initially going to sell me the old one.

Some time back I purchased 13" with antiglare (so the sales person told me), purchase was made in US. and I'm from Canada, came back home and realized that was reg. screen. Called the store, spoke to someone and been told to bring it back. Next weekend went back and got 100% money back, laptop was open and slitly used.
Turned up, it was new kid and didn't know apple products, little sad.
