My modem finally reports how long i've been online now though...maybe it's a trade-off? Hmmm, since they finally put DSL out here in the boonies I guess that's a lose-lose for me....:)

The reason UTD is cheaper is because we all bought systems recently and you're paying for the OS when you buy the system, so the new one is basically discounted by what you've already paid for. We should've gotten the exact same thing as someone who purchased any version of Mac OS and then "upgraded." And if the contents are the same, what's the problem with sending the box? This is so stupid of Apple.....it's really very petty, I mean I know they're out to make money because I understand how economies work but geez, that box does not cost that much...yet there are people that will pay lots of money just for the box even though they qualified for UTD so I guess it's a smart, though assholish, thing for Apple to do...on a lighter note does anyone else seem to have problems with their illum keyboard now that panther is installed? Specifically after it's been asleep?

What problems with your keyboard? Mine seems fine, but if there is a specific problem, I can check mine out more closely.

Well, for one thing, it makes it harder to sell on eBay for an easy profit...

Why should they include a box? If you got the OS with your new computer, you wouldn't have a box. And the Up-to-Date program is a proxy for that...

It's been asleep for about 15-16 hours and then I woke it and put it back to sleep for a little while and then I turned the lights off and the keyboard did not light so I hit F8 and it showed that it was on but that it wasn't dark enough to come on....so I closed it and woke it and it worked and now it has the same problem...but I can't close it cause that'll end my stupid AOL....I dunno why it's doing it but maybe a reboot will solve the problem...it's obviously software related (unless the sensors aren't working now somehow) and rebooting solves like 90% of computer problems so when I do I'll let you know what happens...

I guess but you're led to believe that you're getting exactly what everyone else is...and I think it even showed the box when I ordered it...I don't feel like I'm entitled to it, but it would be easy for them to send the box....and yes I guess you could make an easy profit on it...but then again so could anyone who had a boxed version (or even a box-less version) before the release...like that UK guy who got it on wednesday (assuming that they could ship it fast enough :))...

That's weird, mine seems to be working like normal. It seems to be brighter by default than Jaguar would set it to, though.

It did seem a little brighter....when it worked :)

Panther has seemed to have had quite a few bugs. Fortunately, I've found work arounds, fixes, and general ways past the ones that annoyed me the most. The only one that seems to be sticking is that the DHCP won't renew my IP address like it should so I have to go in and type one in manually or turn it off and on to get it working again. I can't wait for 10.3.1 to be released with a round of bug fixes.

Yeah, me too!

I just tried to enter in my date of purchase sept.17th with the correct serial number and it did not accept it. I tried all other sept dates, to no avail. i then tried Oct.8th and it worked. I should be receiving my Panther Update in the next 2 days..... fancy that? Wonder why it worked?

Probably because you committed fraud. (probably not felony fraud, but fraud nonetheless)

Hahahahaha, you crack me up. Let's see it states here that you purchased your computer on sept.19th, so essentially your also committing fraud for filling out the form that clearly states that the updates are for those who purchased their computers after Oct.8th. Seems like your using the same breakdown in the system as I am..... would you not say :) Anyhow, I think you'll agree with me that Apple should have created a discount for users who purchased their computer in the past 3 months. I would have easily paid 50% of the retail cost. However, I find it's quite surprising to have to fork out another $125 or so for an upgrade. Anyhow, no offense on the crack, but I did have to defend your rationality there :)

I purchased my 12" AlBook from Compusa on the 2nd of November. I told the Apple Rep that I didn't feel it was fair that Panther was out and I am buying a brand new 1800 machine from them, and I still have to pay an "upgrade fee".

He explained it was to cover shipping and printing and other things just so that Apple could break even.

After I got the CompUSA manager over there, he took off 20 bucks to make my upgrade fee for Panther "free". Not quite free, but still it seemed better than nothing.

That's been discussed before, and if you give them the actual purchase date, you weren't lying, and (doubtfully, but possible) didn't know it would work. By giving false information with an intent to cheat on a form, that's most certainly fraud. I doubt they'll come after you though, their legal department is probably way too busy to bother with one person.
