So I'm having some trouble with my bootcamp install on my Mac Pro 5,1. Ever since I upgraded it from 7 to 10 during the initial free period it's had absolutely terrible performance. It's like the hard disk takes several minutes to load anything. Is this something I can fix by nuking all the drivers and then reinstalling them, or is it something that would require me to reinstall the entire OS?

Also, is it possible to boot the 5,1 from a USB SSD with win 10 on it?

I’m hoping someone can help. I have a mid 2012 Mac Pro with the Radeon 5800 series graphics card. I installed Windows 10 on a separate hard drive but I’m having a couple issues:

Second monitor is in greyscale, Magic Mouse doesn’t scroll, and number pad on Apple keyboard doesn’t work.

I installed the correct drivers, BT works, sound works.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have been browsing and reading multiple threads on how to get Windows 10 installed on a Mac Pro 5,1. From what I have gathered it seems that Windows 10 should be installed in EFI mode to gain the best performance. Can anyone give me the proper steps to get Windows 10 up and running since bootcamp does not support Windows 10. My setup is below.

Mac Pro 5,1
1TB SSD - macOS Sierra installed
480GB SSD - This will be dedicated to Windows 10
I have Windows 10 on my Mac Pro 5.1 from 2012 with the app Parallel Desktops https://www.parallels.com/welcome-trial/. You download the app and then you can download Windows. The app is free in the beginning but if you want it for a longer time you need to pay for it. But I don’t know how safe and reliable this is. I am very frustrated, and have been for the last year, what I should do with this computer when it’s not supported by Apple anymore. Should I leave Mac and buy PC? Catalina can be installed but it’s not optimal. You need patcher in the first place.

What's not working that you are frustrated with? You have an old computer but if it still does what you need then you can just keep on using it. If it doesn't fit your needs then you should figure out what your needs are. This is usually driven by the applications. If you are in BootCamp all of the time then get a new PC. If you need OS X then get a Mac (some are okay with a Hackintosh).

I can attest to this. I have El Capitan on my daily driver. It isn't the newest or the fastest, but it suits my needs and it suits them well. :)

Hello

I'm preparing to install Windows 10 Pro on my Mac Pro 4.1(flashed to 5.1). Does the Mac have to run bios 144.0.0.0
or will it work with the default one MP51.0089.B00. I think maybe the Bios change is mainly if you want to run Mojave as well as far as i understood.

At the moment i'm all fine with High Sierra.

A common method is to use Windows 10 installation disk or Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
About Windows 10 installation disk can be made by Windows 10 iso and a disk, all you need to do is burn iso to a disk.
And about Windows 10 Media Creation Tool that can be found from Microsoft.

Hi Marse

I didn't update any BIOS or anything else before this.

I actually just now finished installing Windows 10 Pro Build 1909, directly on my Mac Pro 4.1(5.1) with bootcamp drivers and all, via a Win 10 DVD drive, In my first attempts something was wrong with the downloaded ISO/DVD I had burned, and it said "Missing drivers...." I took and created a new ISO from another more recent Windows 10 Pro machine with the mediacreationtool. and the Installation worked out of the box just by booting into the DVD with holding "c" at boot time. Also worth mentioning is all was done with the RX 580 in the Machine, and all other Disks taken out to not make any mistakes on partitions. i did this test on a 60 Gb disk, and will redo this again on a larger SSD to make it more permanent.

The only downside I have noticed is that the BootCamp Application on windows can't recognise Mac APFS drives so the Bootcamp switching between the two OS'es does not work properly, only from the Mac side it works, if booted into Windows 10, I can't get back to MacOS if selected on the Windows side, and have to do a CMD+alt+R+P to get the Mac to boot back into High Sierra.

Other than that it seems to work very well with my Sapphire Radeon RX 580.

Thanks
Michael
