Interesting, had same issue as you are just yesterday. I was thinking that I have forgotten my password but it looks like some other issue is responsible. If you think you know your password, this helps:

If you have wait time for entering password, wait, than
Start mac in recovery (for Apple silicone macs, turn off your mac, press and hold start button until you see logo)
When in recovery, it will show your admin account click it, and login there. Make sure you have right keyboard selected, if you can use the same as is your HW keyboard. Login there works. You can change your password there. And it is done.

I still don't know why on login screen it didn't worked. But it did happen after update to 15.5.

P.S. Reset using cloud account for some reason didn't worked. I was connected to wifi, and after 5 min, I canceled the process, because nothing was happening.

What a mess Apple. What a mess.
I reinstalled macOS, but the hard drive is not showing?

I wonder if it’s some type of glitch.

Always always back up your data. If whatever you have is important to you there should be at least two and better yet three copies of it. It doesn’t matter if it’s on macOS, Windows or Linux. Hardware fails, operating systems glitch out, physical damage could happen. There are too many ways to lose data.

Not to jinx it, but this is one of my biggest fears, especially every one of those times you swear you entered your passcode correctly, but apparently didn’t.
I really hope you’re getting your issues completely fixed OP, at least you’re back in your system now.

password has always worked until now, of course, but now I see many others have the same issue, with different macOS versions, so it's some kind of bug, & my external hard drive is mounted like normal, & I went to "Go To" in the Finder & the Mac HD is there & in the Finder now, but NOT on the Desktop or in any Finder windows, so it's there & usable, just not mounting at all

It's not full. He's looking at the hard drive at the device level which will always show 0kb free.
The base APFS container formatting will always fill up the entire device regardless of how much data is actually stored in it.
yes I see that;
I went to "Go To" in the Finder & the Mac HD is there, but not mounting not he Desktop, not in the Sidebar, & not showing in any Finder windows, but it is still accessible so I can use it, but not mounted & can't be mounted; my external hard drive is mounted & working normally.

Others are having the same issue with different macOS' so it's some kind of major software bug, it looks like?

Not following... if you see "Macintosh HD - Data" volume in Disk Utility than volume is mounted. What exactly "is not mounting"?
the Mac HD is NOT mounting, showing on the Desktop or in the Finder windows at all.

There are different
Having only 20 gigs available out of a terabyte drive is highly likely to be causing issues.
Yes, but the Mac Hard Drive has always been empty; we use an external drive. Mac HD just hold iCloud files, & the basic apps, & I just erased the Mac HD & reinstalled fresh, so it should not be showing as full, because it is not & never has been.

Have you read and understood @surferfb's post?

After a new macOS install it is normal, that the HD is not showing on the desktop.
Follow his advice please.
ok, that makes no sense?
why would the Mac hard drive not show after installing?
& how do I get the Mac HD to show in the Finder & Desktop & windows like normally?

What are you talking about??

I agree that not showing the HD after a new install is not an ideal situation. But that is how macOS does it (for a long time now).
I didn't design the system, I am just trying to help you find your way.

So again:
While in the Finder, go to the "Finder" menu and select "Preferences". From the "General" tab, place a check next to "Hard disks" -- this will make your hard drive visible on the Desktop.

Yes I tried that.
not working, but why is that turned off by default?

the hard drive should always be showing on the desktop, shouldn't it?
i don't understand?

Your screenshot shows the "Sidebar" Tab, not the "General" Tab. Select the icon on the far left of the Finder Settings window.

I did that. Did not help.

Not working.
Strange.

ok, question, why is that turned off by default?
that makes no sense to me?
I was about to ask you why do you want the Hard Drive showing 🤣. I don’t think I’ve used it that way in over a decade. I just get to everything via the finder.

(Obviously if that’s how you’re used to using it you should be able to use it that way)

same, but the Hard drive isn't even showing in the Finder

we just had our iCloud backup on there & apps, nothing important,
so my mom said to erase the hard drive.

I don't understand why the hard drive would be hidden by default, though?
isn't that just confusing??

There is saying my colleague used to say: When you are in a hole, STOP DIGGING. Panicking is not helpful here.
And no, it is not common to see this issue. It is likely not impossible to corrupt the password hash used for login, but seems really rare from how rarely it appears in this forum.
Every time I had issues with log in password (on any system) it turned out to be keyboard related, usually hardware, but potentially also keyboard locale changed by accident. Difficult to say now.
Either way, missing HD on desktop is NOT sign it is not mounted, you would not be able to even start. Default setting is to hide drives from desktop - for Mac, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows - today. I always fight to put it back... I like it there, even though it is not that much needed anymore.

Finding help from someone with more experience and cooler approach will make your problem easier to handle.
