Manchester United = the Yankees?

I didn't read through all the posts, but they haven't won a title in some time now...

Personally, I'm a Chelsea supporter, so obviously I'm going to say go with them, but I mean you watch the world cup, you know the star players, pick out a few and hunt them down.

How long have you been a chelsea fan?

Tough luck, aloofman

I just checked the fixture list, and has luck would have it the first match for Spurs is against Bolton at the Reebok. That should be a good one, London clubs do not like travelling to the northwest.

I can't start with Chelsea because they have the ultimate bandwagon status at this point, even more so than Arsenal or Man U. I would go so far as to say that, given their meteoric money-driven rise to the top, no one can justify supporting Chelsea unless they already were prior to the Russian owner's arrival. (And if you're one of those, then you're living the good life.) No one can respect you if you started rooting for them within the last couple years. If you're going to start, you'll pretty much have to wait until they suck again, but who wants to do that?

Everyone has to play everyone else home and away, right? Might as well jump in the fire early.

You have chosen... poorly. ;)

Liverpool would have been a much better choice.

nope... liverpool are a bad choice for anyone outside england (and even inside england sometimes)....

I've spent the last 6 pages talking him out of it

Spurs will not win anything so don't expect to have much joy :)

Spurs are a respectable choice. Good luck with that.

And to finish on a high, just because I'm in the mood...

I O COUNTY!!!

Hmmm to me, you don't "choose" a team to support, the team chooses you.

In some way you'll feel connected or closer to a particular team, weather you were born in the area, or had some type of memory or link to the club.

For me, when I first started playing soccer, at about 7 or 8, the team I was put in was called Liverpool (obviously after Liverpool FC), later when I was forced into a choir :)mad: ) at primary school, the one of the songs we had to sing was 'You'll Never Walk Alone.'

And thats how my life as a Liverpool supporter was born. Fate really.

I can understand that. Having eliminated Chelsea and ManU from contention for obvious reasons, I was mostly looking among the next half dozen teams.

- Arsenal seemed like a natural choice on paper, but I never felt myself rooting for them in any game I watched. I can't really explain why, but I wasn't feeling anything.

- Liverpool also seemed like a strong choice, but for idiosyncratic reasons, I just find bright red clothes really irritating, and couldn't imagine myself wearing one of their jerseys. Yes, I know that doesn't really have much to do with how they do on the field. Also, a friend of mine is a lifelong Liverpool fan, so it's more fun to pick one of their opponents than to join up with him.

- None of the Blackburn players seemed that interesting to me, although the "bought-a-championship-then-fell-from-grace" storyline was intriguing. And another friend is a fan already.

- Newcastle seemed like a team that's more fun to be a fan of than to actually root for, if that makes any sense. I've heard them compared to Oakland Raiders fans. I was a Raiders fan while they played in L.A., so they might have appealed to me back then, but not anymore.

- Bolton didn't really stand out for me while watching the games and I later realized that I couldn't remember the names of any of their players. I took this as a bad sign and crossed them off the list. Now that I've shunned them, karma is probably against me on Saturday.

In the end I liked Tottenham's cast of characters. I liked that they are a team on the rise, but haven't really won anything recently. They're good enough that relegation isn't likely any time soon. There's an amusing soap opera involving Jermain Defoe and whether he'll be good or waste his chances. A logo of a cock on top of a ball is pretty funny. And I get a masochistic thrill out of rooting for North London's second-best team, with all the underdog excitement/disappointment that entails. And this is probably silly, but I just like the uniforms.

Hopefully some of that made sense and the rest was just loopy. If I rationalized it too much then, as you say, the team wouldn't have picked me. I think.

I can't view that page because I'm not subscribed. Could you tell me the gist of the article?

aloofman, I admit that the Liverpool red kit is a bit irritating, bt the yellow and white ones are amazing!

Liverpool fans also tend to be very interesting people.

not sure where you got that yellow kit from....
but both of those are out of date, as Adidas bought out Reebok and therefore Liverpool now have Adidas kits, which look great, except for the white and green one, which is quite possibly the worst kit i've seen in years.

<---- Can you guess which team I support???

Anyways, I watch the EPL quite a bit and about eleven years ago I began following Manchester City (all the way down to the old Second Division, which was the even older Third Division). No big name superstars and they're a pretty decent club.

If you've got Fox Soccer Channel they're showing the Chelsea v City game live Sunday morning at 11am.
