Thanks for everyone's input. A police report has been filed. I got off work and spoke with a Verizon rep and they said I should come into the store tomorrow to see what they can do for me. It has been a tough day but my coworkers and friends have been supportive and explain to me that stuff like this happens and I should let go of it and move on, which is what I'm going to try and do.
I just picked up my Verizon phone today and activated it at Starbucks. Still had my dumb phone in my pocket, thanks.

wow i find it hard that in USA when a phone is stolen you leave it like that !! Im in a island (dominican republic) and if your phone is stolen you call your carrier and they blacklist the IMEI , as soon the phone comes in the network they trace it and sens police and yes **** you get it back !!!

AMEX will only give you back what you paid for the phone. So if you paid the subsidized price they will only give you the subsidized price. They will not give you $650 for full price that it will cost you unless that's what you paid for it.
Always remember that with Amex 90 day accidental/thrift protection. Better than nothing.
Why even call the police. Thousands of phones are stolen everyday and they will do nothing except give you a piece of paper of which is useless unless you have insurance to replace it.
In the end you are just going to have to get another phone or do without. Sorry it happened and I know you are mad but sooner or later you will need to just move on!

Because the iPhone 4S is considered a high value item. It's just not just a dumb phone valued at less than $100.
iPhones are valued at over $650. In many states (depending on the state laws), stealing an iPhone is considered a felony.
Reporting to the police and potentially tracking down the phone via esn or imei may lead to an arrest and a felony charges.
We have laws and criminals need to be prosecuted. If it happened in a store, I am surprised there isn't any surveillance camera.
Whoever stole this phone is a criminal. They need to be brought to justice.
So it's "not just a cell phone..and move on" Stealing a brand new iphone is the equivalent stealing $650 cash out of someone's wallet. This is not petty theft we are dealing with in many states.

At the very least I'm glad it happened in public and not somewhere worse could have happened.
I know it's awful and will take a while to get over but at least you were not hurt or worse for it.
