Q. Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered?

A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift.

Q. Must I notify the seller if I keep unordered merchandise without paying for it?

A. You have no legal obligation to notify the seller. However, it is a good idea to write a letter to the company stating that you didn’t order the item and, therefore, you have a legal right to keep it for free. This may discourage the seller from sending you bills or dunning notices, or it may help clear up an honest error. Send your letter by certified mail. Keep the return receipt and a copy of the letter for your records. You may need it later.

How convinent you skipped over the actual one that applies here:

Q. What should I do if the unordered merchandise I received was the result of an honest shipping error?

A. Write the seller and offer to return the merchandise, provided the seller pays for postage and handling. Give the seller a specific and reasonable amount of time (say 30 days) to pick up the merchandise or arrange to have it returned at no expense to you. Tell the seller that you reserve the right to keep the merchandise or dispose of it after the specified time has passed.

Not to mention this is a different situation. He ordered the item and they sent two, thats a big difference than getting bogus CD's in the mail. If Dell accidentally drops off a XPS gaming rig at my house I guarantee they will do anything to get it back. At work, Dell once accidentally sent us a huge plasma display, but we had to return it because we got a bill in the mail. You cannot keep stuff like that. Its morally wrong and illegal.

Ur a thief, and you make the products I buy more expensive.

I agree. The mindset people have these days is really sad. I am 21 (my birthday was yesterday :) ) and I return anything I accidentally get (and it does happen on occasion). Its the right thing to do, and anyone who says otherwise is not that great of a person. Sorry.

and you're just a hater because you're sexually repressed.

Uh? That's not even funny. Here is the thing, Apple would likely notice this at some point. They would then wonder why a $700 item is missing from their inventory, track it back to the people who packaged the orders, and one of those people might need to foot the bill themselves, or face other sanctions at work because of it. Quit thinking about yourself and realize this could actually impact others as well.

something that small.. they write it off and never look back... why dedicate 1 person to tracking down why inventory is off by 1. not to mention its probably off by more than 1 anyway because no inventory is ever perfect.

they plan for losses with any release... it happens. if an entire pallet went missing then it would raise flags... but even then they would probably take it as a loss rather than the public humiliation of 'miss placing' and entire pallet.

This reminds me of something that happend to me last month with ticketmaster. I ordered tickets to an event and received 2 envelopes that were stuck together in the mail, my tickets were there, but I also received someone else that didn't even live in my state's tickets. I found the woman on facebook, sent her a message and sent the tickets to her. It was no sweat off my sack to re-send them to her.... oooo it cost me 46 cents... Think about it if it was reversed and someone else got my tickets, I'd be kind of upset if they never got to me and someone else used them, same with the iPhone. Good call on calling Apple

I highly doubt they wont wonder. And if what you are saying is true, it must be great for the employees there because they can steal items occasionally and know Apple won't even try to figure out whats happening. See the flaws in that logic? It would take Apple 5 minutes to narrow it down to the exact facility the error happened. Their logs with serials would identify where the missing device went. It takes no time to determine what happened with a functional inventory.

OWNED!!!!!!! :D:D:D

Dude, you did the right thing. Don't let the comments from these punk little kids make you think otherwise. The good karma you have coming to you is worth more then any amount of money you would have made by selling it.

Good job, it's nice to know there are some good people left in this world.

You did the right thing and were rewarded for it, sounds like a win-win situation.

Maybe Steve will send you a Christmas card.

I hope I don't lose my wallet and have one of you guys (most of you) find it. I know you'd just take the cash and never try to return it.
