Great, people who want a stalking device just buy something specifically for that purpose. But the 99.999% of other users who want to find their stuff even when it's stolen can never use AirTags.

What a crock. They are used all the time to find stolen items.

Two things are needed, 1. Make it all aluminum, the plastic looks cheap and scuffs easily 2. Try and add GPS, as the apple tracking network isbn't always reliable.
So you want them to remove the plastic that makes the antenna work and make it heavier and more expensive.
And how is your plastic scuffed so badly but you have no problem with the polished aluminium?

Yeah you are right, maybe mate metal of some type, I just think there is room for some hardware improvement. Like I can push on the plastic lightly, and it bends a bit.

I have a couple new feature wants. First, the existing form should include an LED light that activates (flashes) when in locate mode. That would make locating one easier and be especially helpful for those who are deaf/hard of hearing. Second, would be a flat form that would be rechargeable by Qi/magsafe, including from an iPhone itself.

the battery would have to be so small, youd need to recharge it so often it wouldnt be as useful for its primary purpose.

i have found a third party device that lights up (extremely brightly!) when you locate it, instead of a sound. i thought it was cool, had no idea when i bought it!

I have an AirTag on my keys, and this helped me find them a mile away last year. Game changer. Then last weekend, I suggested to my partner that we put one on our other set of keys that has the car key on.. We didn't do it at the time. Drove an hour away and went on a long walk, lost the keys, had 4-5 hours of enormous stress before we could get back in the car after waiting for locksmith etc etc. Total pain. AirTags are amazing 😣

How would that help with stalkers?

The fundamental problem is you don't know if the one carrying the AirTag or the one owning the AirTag is the bad guy.
And people traveling with you are your bag will continue to get random AirTag is follow you notices.

GPS is receive only, how will this help with tracking?

devils advocate here, most people dont understand this fact. 'adding gps' isnt what people think it is.

that said, if it did have gps, the airtag could transmit its actual lat/long to the devices that detect it instead of the device reporting the coordinates it was when the tag was seen.

There are a decent amount of sales on AirTags. I've picked up single AirTags for a bit under $20.
Not even my suitcase is worth $20. 🤷‍♂️
Only expensive things I have is my iPhone(paid by work), iPad, AirPods(paid by work) and MBP(paid by work). And they have built in tracking.

Its sometimes less about the value of the thing, and more about the about the disruption caused by not having your items. be it a key, a bag with important things you need, etc.

In theory sure, but in 42 years I've never lost anything.
If it's imporant enough I make sure I have copies, or something that can replace its function.
I did drop my phone in a river once, it also happened to be my car key(Tesla) but fortunately managed to fish it up. If not my friends could have called my partner and she could've unlocked and started the car for us with her Tesla app. 🤷‍♂️

You're very fortunate, haha!

For me, the cost is worth an additional piece of mind, even if I don't lose anything my AirTag is attached to.

There have been a decent amount of stories where airlines have lost / misplaced luggage, informed the passenger that the luggage was in fact delivered, and passengers were able to dispute that by showing the AirTag location.

But if you don't have a use case for them...then its just not for you, but there's definitely a huge market for it, and people have had a ton of success locating and retrieving items with using trackers as accessories. And it isn't just AirTags. Tile, Galaxy Tags, etc. have all served a purpose.

I always toss one in my luggage...even if I don't personally lose it, I know exactly where it is should there be a mix up or a delay.

sometimes 'losing something' is outside off your control.

if you like practical application of 'theory' take a multi-hop flight and check a bag. AirTags give you insights on where your items are when otherwise you'd have nothing.

do you get it? you 'ive never lost anything' types never seem to, or are fibbers.

I fly regularly, never lost a bag. But as said, even if I do neither the bag or it's content have anything that I "must not lose", is expensive or difficult to replace.
It's just cheap clothes and personal hygiene stuff. Can be replaced in minutes at all destinations.

Not annoying my colleagues with warning notices just because we happen to be in the same building and take walks sometimes...?
it would only happen once per person, ever. they are prompted if they know the airtag with them and ignore it.

People have too much **** they don't really need. 😉
I realized pretty early in my life that things don't make me happy, I prefer experiences. So I'm very minimalistic when it comes to owning stuff.

As a senior citizen with diminished hearing, I hope they increase the tag volume. I can barely hear it if it's in a bag. It definitely pales in comparison to Tiles when it comes to volume.

Replaceable rechargeable battery > replaceable non-rechargeable battery > non-replaceable rechargeable battery > non-replaceable non-rechargeable battery.
