iPhone 7 is going to be a non-event. No matter how much excitement Apple tries to drum up, it will be more of the same. Apple's competitors have had a number of great features in their prior generation that is rumored to be on the drawing board for Apple's iPhone 8. To put it another way, we've seen Samsung introduce new features in 2015 that Apple may debut in 2017.

I can't help but think, Apple playing it safe and trying to squeeze profits by just rehashing the same ol' same ol year over year has caught up to them.
Apple almost never releases new, unproven features first. Samsung has always had the throw everything at the wall and see what sticks while Apple plays it safe and waits to see what's actually useful then releases a refined version of it. NFC, big screens, fingerprint scanners, etc. Not sure why you're surprised they're doing what they always do.

I am really surprised that you think Apple is jumping on the "squeeze the profits" bandwagon.
I'm not jumping on, I've been on.

Slightly off topic, but germane to the squeezing profit topic:
Apple is selling their 15" rMBP for 2,200 dollars. That computer is Haswell based and has no dGPU.
Dell has a Skylake based 15" XPS that exceeds the look and feel of the dated MBP for only 1,400

Apple has shown under Cook a minor updates, painted as major. The competition has leaped frogged apple in many ways for the past few years, while Apple enjoyed phenomenal and incredible sales. What is there to be excited about the iPhone 7? The lack of a headphone jack, that no one wants gone, all in the name of a thinner phone? Where as Samsung has been offering wireless charging, water proofing for years.

While I agree that Apple holds back on specs, there will come a point where it's no longer possible or beneficial to have better specs. I mean, who would really need 8GB of RAM on a smartphone? Who would need an 8K smartphone display?

I hate that Apple still has 750p displays in their flagships, but eventually the competition will not be able to go further, and then it won't matter because they reached the point of diminishing returns.

Its pretty damn obvious we are in for one sunk quarter after another.Apple needs another Steve Jobs and fast

Back in 2010 Apple actually was the best in class in everything, even compared to Samsung who people claim "throws unreliable hardware together".Apple from that point on just sat still like in the traditional mouse and cat story and the picture has become so sad that Samsung is on OLED displays with a blistering 450+ PPI while the iPhone is still on a measly 750P LCD.Heck they actually bundled a 12GB phone with a 4K camera when 32GB just costs a couple of dollars more which is peanuts for Apple all to upsell the 64 GB variant.16GB is way to painful based on how people I know use it.Cant keep more than one album and 1 movie without less than 1 GB left. Its not even a smartphone at that point considering how much I compromise for space especially when others have adopted 32gigs as standard

I believe the iPhone 7 will be the wakeup call for Apple as if this is all the iPhone 7 has,Samsung is gonna destroy them with the S8 Edge as customers look ahead for better hardware instead of the usual big bezel design which is starting to get a little long in the tooth

In the old times when we had 100MB floppies we used to say 1GB was overkill.See what happened next?4K displays and OLED are the future. The battery tech has not kept up.Once it does you will find the current displays as a mess compared to a true 4K display

Sure, 4K is one thing, but 8K on a smartphone? Overkill, and a battery waster. Same thing with 8GB of RAM. Even PC's don't have that much RAM standard.

I have to hope Apple has a trick up its sleeve to remove the jack and not provide something better in return is suicide. Since basically all that is known is the form factor I'm thinking there will be a surprise or two. Wireless charging and water proofing are not anything I care about. Samsung has NOT had water proofing for years, the Galaxy s6 was not water proof, whereas some other prior models may have had it here and there.

Apples entirety of their IOS ecosystem is best for me. I think it's best period. Steve jobs could have sunk Apple in 2016, could have been utter failure. Never can predict these things. Steve may have never okayed a larger form factor which lead to multi-record breaking quarters.

It's never about pure specs with Apple. They still manage to do a lot more, reliably with custom hardware and iOS than the competition. They do not engage in spec wars.

I didn't read through all responses so forgive me if it's been said.

The reason there is no note 6 is because, for the first time ever, the intervals are "basically" ubiquitous amongst the glaxasy s 7 brand. The note was always the much more powerful release. This note is only different in its screen size and s pen peripheral.

Just wanted to point that out since it was mentioned in the OP.

Disappointment awaits you because that's exactly what's gonna happen. No doubt it's a step towards the audio innovation you have been talking about but it's going to be reserved for the anniversary iPhone next year. The only use by removing the jack for this year is to make the phone thinner (which it is) and mock us with empty speaker outlets to earn even more margins by dumping the jack and reducing costs by not adding any speakers to compensate .It's even thinner than the iPhone 6

And yet once Apple inevitably implements hem in the iPhone 8 you will be fawning over them as if they were things no one cared about,Apple would not incorporate them into which they are in iPhone 8 so consider yourself among the minority who don't want it

Your statements are flawed because Steve rescued the company from bankruptcy.Steve was the one who Made Microsoft eat their words when the iPhone was mocked. The guy who made the iPhone go from 0 to 100 .When Steve was around the iPhone was a star product .When Tim took over it was a cash cow just like Windows was when Nadella came at the helm. What Apple needs now are stars, not cash cows

I can assure you that all of what Samsung is implementing including the OLED is going to be in the iPhone 8.The Galaxy Note 7 is basically the iPhone 8 today

Most of us here are "in the bubble" we know what's coming next we speculate and plan ahead. The vast majority of consumers do not.

We know that the iPhone 7 And 7 Plus look and act 98% just like the 6s and 6s Plus hence the lack of enthusiasm evident by the largest threads here in history "Are you gonna skip the iPhone 7 blah blah blah"

So how does Apple over come the negativity pinned on the iPhone 7 this year ?

Simple by changing the name iPhone 8 or iPhone Pro next year. How will it be justified Apple will simple say there are so man upgrades and enhancements that a name change was called for and that will be that.

Didn't Samsung just skip from the Note 5 to Note 7 to much crital acclaim.

I believe it is very likely that there will be very little reason for someone to switch from the iPhone 6 or 6s. Especially with the knowledge Apple will pull out all the stops for the 10 Anniversary next year. The hype will be off the charts which is why deliberately so Apple is slow rolling the 7 this year.

Samsung skipper the note 6 to put in line with the S7.

Just lol at Note 7 design being "generic". It widely acknowledged as being the best smartphone design at the moment, premium materials and all. If anything is generic it's the huge, unoptimized, bezel dominated iPhone 6(S) Plus - pretty much a study in how not to make a phablet.
"Unoptimised"?! in hardware?! Do you know what that word means?!

Can I ask you a few questions about next years Preakness? You seem to know a lot about the future and why Steve (jobs) seemed to start a culture of bean counters; that talent can get you somewhere.

And let's talk about fawning over the new phones. Isn't that what we do here? We fawn over everything; deserved or not. We bash everything; deserved it not.

Have a great day. See you on the next round.

Back then there weren't 3000 mah batteries driving computers, that makes all the difference. There is no break through in battery tech coming, it'a at a standstill for now. And you've been repeating your SJ nonsense even as the company is raking in the Bucks; SJ would have sunk the company the iPhone 6 would never have been released.

The mass will buy the iPhone 7. They don't know about MacRumors to know that the iPhone 8 is right around the corner. Nevertheless, the mass, may or may not care. Some will give/sell their iPhone 7 to a family member to acquire the iPhone 8. It's called CONSUMERISM. But the savvy like those at MacRumors will wait for the iPhone 8. I know I will.

By this do you mean "well over a year away"?

Edited out the first and last para of irrelevant dribble

You missed my point completely.

Step 1:Samsung implements Waterproofing and Wireless charging and invents OLED
Step 2.Wireless charging and Waterproofing is irrelevant and I dont need it.OLED gives headaches and LCD is superior.2K Resolution is not needed by Apple as they dont get into spec wars and simultaneously claiming the A9 destroys the competition
Step 3: 3 years later Apple implements OLED,Waterproofing and 2K Resolution with Samsung as the prime supplier
Step 4:OMG I LOVE MY new iPhone. The Best iPhone ever.Just look at this revolutinary display.Mind boggling. The only thats changed is everything, man. For real

And yet I have an ancient relic laptop right now in the basement and it still lasts less than the modern age laptops despite having way less mah battery

Declining Quarters?Declining Sales?Hello?

I agree.Had SJ been alive iPhone 6 wouldnt have been released.Cant imagine Steve releasing a product with ugly antenna bands and a camera bump on the back which si getting worse with every generation. The iPhone 5s and 5 were stark pieces of jewellery.Cold and uncompromsing and beautiful. In fact the back of those iPhones is comparable to the top notch designs of today
He would have released an even more revolutionary product. And before you accuse me about my "talent " look at his track record.4 Products. All smash hits within years of launching.
Increasing a screen size for more sales is easy as your customers are waiting for an expected competitive feature.Heck I can almost guarantee the iPhone 8 will topple the records of the iPhone 6?Why?Because of the OLED display and brand new design people will buy it in droves.Whats difficult is building something no one dared think about and thats what Steve excelled in

Umm, pot calling the kettle black? Pot meet kettle? Nevermind....
Umm, I was pointing out how your lack of punctuation meant you weren't saying "LOL! Pot, meet kettle." But instead "Lol pot, meet kettle." Nevermind...

Oh, hey, great!! There is nothing more constructive that someone who knows what another is saying, however despite that insists on correcting punctuation. LOL!......thanks. I can get back to my day now

Same here.

You really have to reach across the great divide if you think SJ would have "saved" the company in 2016. Saved is in quotes because Apple does not need saving. As the most valuable company in the world there is a group of hard core fans a lot of them here with a lot of different viewpoints. SJ could have sunk the company in 2016.

For me only I don't care what Samsung does, the entirety of their phones do not work as well for me as the entirety of apples phones.

Not quite, I don't know the future as well as some others. So it seems there are a lot of covers for this one pot.

me to, may be the first year i skip actually. The 6S is a beast and I have yet to find a game or a productive applications for work/school that it even stutters at handling. I do wish I could have more screen on the same size phone though.

You seem to be mumbling quite a lot, lol.

They skipped the '6' in the note to keep it inline with the galaxy series and also feel superior to the iPhone. Thing about it like this, an average consumer who knows nothing about tech walks into a store and wants to buy a phone. Seeing an iPhone 6s v Samsung note 7/galaxy 7 instantly rings the bells that its a newer and better device. Contrary to the actual devices themselves, thats how average consumers think and thats why they skipped it.

Also, you basically just re iterated things people have said for a year. Yes, we get it. They will change the name next year and people are hesitant about buying the iPhone 7. Im buying one indefinitely. The phone isn't even released so lets keep these threads for a later date. This could of easily been one comment and not a whole thread.
