It's gotten to the point that I almost can't visit The Verge site anymore. Not sure if the problem is resources on the iPad, or if it's some bad code on The Verge, but it sucks either.

This.

The Verge is using 3x the amount of RAM of any other tab open in Safari on my Mac.

Actually this is a very reasonable request. I guess it's just not something Apple has thought of up until this point.

WTF??? Where do you think that information goes when it gets paged out? You seem pretty arrogant for someone that doesn't appear to have any idea what he's talking about.

----------

What NONE of you obviously has is a working knowledge of how dynamic RAM allocation factors into this equation. The iPhone even at IOS 9 will never need any more than 1 GB of RAM because of the way dynamic ram allocation is built by Apple.

What in the world are you talking about???? All RAM memory allocation is dynamic (static wouldn't be very usable, would it???) Are you babbling about objective C developers needing manage their own memory usage vs auto garbage collection in Java? If so, you don't communicate very well at all...

----------

It's about backwards compatability.
Once 2gb are available devs will make apps that require that much.
Only 1gb will force them to work around it.
Because of this :apple:s products have a high resale value and a good reputation.
The ipad 2 is still running strong as ever with 512mb ram.

Most customers won't notice the lower amount of ram, but they would notice new apps not running.

This is a great theory and a ******* reason for apple to not add the memory if true. Especially taking into consideration the cost of a new device.

Lucky for me, I have never experienced any issue with not having 2GB of RAM. must be frustrating for others, but I use my device a lot. Never been disappointed at its speed. I have use new android devices and they have lagged at basic functions. Slow opening photos etc. so for me, not having 2GB really doesn't phase me. It does what I need it to do, and speedy too! :) out of curiosity, what apps are people using when they are frustrated they don't have more??

Well here's one example of how the platform as a whole would improve. I'm currently playing XCom on my iPhone 6 (fantastic game if you have never played it. I cannot recommend it enough). Whenever I leave the app, it must reload. The reload process takes 10 sec or so. So if I get a message, if I want to reply, it can take 20sec or so to get back to where I am. That's annoying. More ram would significantly help prevent that, as the app would just stay open in ram, even if its not true multitasking.

The Same exact thing happens on my Nexus 7 2013 with 2 GB of RAM and running in ART mode also, I have just tried this with a few games from the Play Store (including XCom)

Reloading happens just as much on Android

Ram can tend to be an very ignorant discussion here on Macrumors. Lets clear it up a bit.

Compared to iPhone's competitors (android, google), Apple differentiates themselves by having full control over our own Chip -- The A8. Apple meticulously creates this chip to provide fine tuned synergy with iOS. THAT's why we don't need the massive specs, or the extra ram. All functionality of your iPhone is satisfied with the current hardware due to Apple being able to tailor the chip to OS's needs.

Take for instance android phones. Most of them use Qualcomm chips. Qualcomm is a chip manufacturer. Android Phone companies basically have to buy this chip, and then create their mobile OS around it (Which is the opposite way of how Apple does it). This can create bottlenecks in their Android OS, and doesn't let them get the most out of their hardware. They have to put MORE hardware specs in just to match the polished experience that iOS provides.

Let's do a little test. Lets look at the A7 -- the last iteration chip(iPhone 5/5s). Lets compare it to the Nexus 4 which had the snapdragon s4 pro.

So the iPhone 5's A7 chip ( Dual core, 1300 MHz, with 1gb ram) vs Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro ( Quad core, 1500 MHz, with 2gb ram) -BIGGER SPECS AND MORE RAM

Here are the benchmark comparisons. The A7 was better in benchmarks.

Also, you can google this yourself. But compare the A7 to the chip in the Galaxy S5 and the benchmarks are pretty much on par with each other. Which is pretty awesome for the iPhone. Anyway, I hope this clears up why we don't need the extra ram.

So the next time an androider says "WE HAVE 2GB RAM!! HER DER" you just say, "yea you guys need it more than we do. " --then moonwalk away from them while maintaining strict eye contact.

TL;DR We tailor our own chip - we don't need the extra ram.

Yes that's why they put 2gb in the iPad air II AND why they will put 2gb in a he iphone 6s ... To get you to buy it.

I have the note 3 (3GB ram) and there is no reload issue whatsoever

Edit: It tooks 8 tabs until it started reloading pages

According to Anandtech 1GB is good for 5 safari tabs. We need more ram.

Whoever at Anandtech said that is an idiot.

It's blanket statements like this with not context that confuse the issue and drive the noobs nuts.

You and millions of other iOS device users.

So are we now saying that Apple KNOWS how to make a perfect phone and should not be second guessed?
Jebus...late to the 3g game, late to the LTE game, late to the NFC game, late to the screen size game, late to the front facing camera resolution game (facetime sucks on VGA res), late to the widgets game, late to the active notifications game.
I can keep going but unless people complain about these things, nothing will be improved!
Never settle especially for this kind of ******** pricetag!

Goodness! Why would anyone pay premium prices for what is apparently a mid-tier quality product from a confused company? Must be the best marketing ruse of all time!

Happens with applications running in background, if you have a few open, not necessarily with browser tabs.

rofl you use Phonearena for a claim....what a terrible fail... they dont even disclose how they do their test, how about more reliable sites like Anandtech and others, which show the Plus beating out basically almost the whole entirely competition in battery life and the 4.7 inch i6 holding its own well.

----------

Well they're plain wrong and are just going off Apple's quoted specs (which are unachievable).
By most user reports, the i6 and i6+ batteries are a monumental letdown.

Not really, alot of people actually seem to be very pleased and happy with their plus/6 battery life, me, i am getting stupendously good battery life on my Plus, literally probably double the battery life then what I would get on my GS4 easily.

----------

So maybe CNet, The Verge and etc are on Apple friends list? :) iPhones always had high WiFi browsing time, however talk time and standby were the weakness.

I have 5S and i'm not impressed by battery life which gsmarena and phonearena also confirms. It is ok if you surf the net via WiFi but when I start using 3G or 4G full reception battery dies so fast...

I do understand well that iPhones doesn't high capacity battery but saying that it has best battery life among other flagmans is a joke.

did you really say iPhones have weak standby LOL? iPhones have the best standby time in the industry
