Here is why the iPhone is 3.5" according to Giz

Makes sense but I don't think that's the reason they haven't increased the size. Apple is just very into making all their products as small as possible.

That doesn't make any sense. Maybe thickness wise, yes, but screen wise. No, they wouldn't be the reason behind it. 27" iMac? Hardly small.

I hold it in my right hand.:p
I'm 5'4" and my thumb barely reaches across the iphone. Any bigger than that and I wouldn't be able to use it one handed. Also, it fits neatly in my pocket and cup holder. I hope apple doesn't discriminate against those of us with smaller hands by introducing a bigger screen.
Also, if you hold it on your left hand. You'll see the following..

Image

There must be a lot of "little finger" people who are concerned about their limitations if the screen gets larger. I personally owned an android phone with a 4.1" screen and never had any issues reaching over the entire screen using the thumb from the same hand that is holding the phone.

If you've got little sausage fingers and you feel like your going to get embarrassed holding a large 4" phone in public, then don't buy phones that large. Otherwise, stop coming up with retarded excuses for why apple should keep the screen at 3.5".

Ok. Well I am a fairly large man with large hands and my thumb barely reaches the other side of my Galaxy S2. I have to stretch it over and it's not comfortable using with one hand.

Yes this is most likely why Apple chose that screen size. After about a week of fumbling around on that huge screen, and yes you need both hands, to take a picture. Once handed it's not easy. iPhone you can do with ease.

Apple is all about the user experience. They think of every aspect of the experience. No one can compete with their ecosystem. Where is the iTunes equivalent on Android? Doesn't exist. Tight integration with product and services sets them apart.

But most people are fooled on here who want a Android device that bigger specs and a larger screen will make up for it. I did and I thought wrong.

So will most others. They provide these ridiculous screens and 2Ghz processors to make up for their lack of hardware and software integration and services.

You watch, they will make small screens and smaller form factors and focus on software soon. Their strategy isn't working for them. The iPhone 4S is the fastest selling iPhone yet. So screen size certainly hurt them.

Problem with that strategy is that Apple is Software first and for most, and the best at it, by far. Who can compete with them Software wise? Not google, maybe Microsoft. They have a lot of talented people at Microsoft if the red tape did not stand in the engineers way. At Apple they have free reign.

I think that most features on a PHONE should be accesible with one hand. It's not a computer. I'm fine with the screen the way it is. If they had made it SLIGHTLY larger I would have been ok with it but I'm ok with it staying the way it is.

It's all relative!

These arguments are so absurd and pointless. Different size fit for different people. There is no such thing as "the perfect" size--not even 3.5". It's whatever's perfect for you.

+2 :D

Extra point for Reading Rainbow reference.

I don't really think it is relative....

If the screen size is that important to you and you are not happy with 3.5 inches then the iPhone is not for you.

People expect Apple to make everyone custom iPhones and it just doesn't work that. Want a bigger screen? That's fine, but you'll have to go with Samsung or HTC, etc.

Exactly! They don't make one single size of jeans because people are different sizes. Why not make a bigger screen option, I guarantee it will sell. I don't want them to kill off the 3.5" screen, just offer a bigger one along side it. Hell, charge 50 bucks extra, it's worth it to me.

Don't really agree

Basically when you hold the iPhone in your left hand and articulate your thumb, you can reach almost exactly to the other side of the screen while in a bigger screen you can't unless you are very tall. :apple:

Gizmodo article

When I hold my iphone I can easily reach 1/2" below and 1" above, as well as
1" to the inside and I am of average height and have an average size hand.

me too, I just paraphrased the article and found it interesting enough to post it here in MR and see what everybody though on this!

As for my opinion on the subject, I could care less if it was 3.5 or 4 as long as they don't release it smaller than 3.5 or huge like 5. I'm happy w/ 3.5, and I pre-ordered the 4S w/ no hesitation since it's still the best phone while you study/work in the medical field.

How is it the best phone while studying or working in the medical field? I'm a med student too and just wanna know how I could be using it

I would imagine a smaller phone is preferred when conducting a colonoscopy?

the APPSSS and easiness of it all! If you are still doing your basics courses then any smartphone works pretty good. Once you start on clinicals though, you will see about 75% of the people using an iOS device (I think I read it on Medscape? and they had a chart and everything) and compatibility w/ other residents and attendings' when sendings stuff to evaluate or to show them ... Some have android phones and they have enough apps to satisfy the need (BB users have even less apps) but iOS has more apps and more refined to get you to work fast and easily through the day. Basically: *Superior App Store *Integration with iOS devices, namely the iPad *Lack of fragmentation.

Here are some reads that I just goggled: http://www.imedicalapps.com/2011/04/smartphone-doctor-medical-students-iphone-android/

So that left hand represents the size for everybody's left hand? Ok.

I am fine with over 4.3-4.7 inches, but I know not everybody's hands can tolerate just a few millimeters in size on either direction. Such a big deal to them.

For me personally, it depends mostly on the WIDTH of the phone. As long as I can lock the phone around the palm of my hand without falling off. I can live with a taller phone. I've tested many bigger phones in the store to prepare myself if I ever got the Galaxy Note. Holding the HTC Sensation felt like a perfect fit for me and it has a 4.3-inch screen.

3.5 inches is Apple's FIVE-YEAR roadmap with it (2007-2012). I hope it isn't ETERNAL.

What if I actually PREFER the smaller size?

I had an Android phone with a 4.65" screen, it was fine - but guess what, 3.5 was more comfortable, more intuitive and most importantly perfect for the mobile and casual uses of my iPhone.

I have a MBP (home) and an iPad (mobile) for when I want to consume large amounts of media / use a larger screen.

Yes, a bigger screen is nicer for watching videos/reading books, but like others have said, the smaller screen is nice in that it is easier to hold (especially for those of us with small hands). The phone also fits better in my pocket than a larger phone like the Droid X. A 3.7" screen might be nice, but any bigger than that is iffy.

or you could thrown an OS like WP7 on the phone, where all the controls are placed right in comfortable reach of your thumb, no matter the size.

I love iOS, I think its the best OS out there, but some things irritate me about it...namely, that it isn't organized with more of the controls along the bottom

Now that you point it out, that may be part of the reason they are reluctant to move to a bigger screen. I had never thought of that before.

it seems that most of the big / comprehensive medical apps are iPhone exclusive as of now

they're also damn expensive, but I'd imagine worth it as a doctor

I have a 4" Samsung phone and a 3" Palm Pre.

I can be a lot more productive on the 4" screen. It is MUCH better for web browsing, and it makes watching movies and TV actually feasible. It's better for taking pictures with, gaming with and typing on(there is a reason the Palm Pre has no soft keyboard).

The biggest advantage though is for reading books. I don't do it at all on the Palm Pre and the 3.5" iPhone feels cramped as well. Once you get past 4" though, you can start to get a very e-reader like experience. The ideal size for an e-reader is just around 6", IMO, so the iPad is too big and the iPhone is too small. Makes a $79 Kindle really tempting.

So, ya, bigger screens are better, and people have a right to be angry with Apple for not embracing it. Now Android phones are shipping wtih 4.3-4.7" displays while the iPhone is still stuck at 3.5".

For me, I think the ideal size is something like 4.1 or 4.2 inches. I can tolerate a 4.6" screen if there is a good technical reason for it, like a higher resolution or something, but I'd generally prefer something around the 4" mark.

As to the OP, just slide your phone further out over your fingers and you can reach anywhere on the screen. I have no problem going all over a 4" display.

I think this is a good reason why Apple doesn't build a larger iPhone. They have always been about creating the pleasant experience for most people. But some people seem to be rejecting this, saying that its lame or just an excuse. So my question is why do you think they don't build a 4 inch+ screen?

...And I thought the iPhone/iPod Touch has a big screen  Haven't seen a gally 2 in person, didn't know the screen was so big!

Samsung can make phones with large screens because they use AMOLED displays, which are thinner, lighter and more energy efficient than the IPS LCDs that Apple uses. Apple can't get AMOLED displays, or at least can't get enough of them to meet demand for the iPhone, so they have to use the older and easier technology. But this means that they can't make them too big or otherwise they will use too much power and make the phone too heavy.

That's a bit untrue. Look at the HTC Titan, it's not an AMOLED display and its 4.7", and the phone gets good battery life. It's also barely heavier than the iPhone. There's no technological problem with bigger displays.

I have to admit. The larger screens look strikingly good. Just seems right.

However, I will trust Apple on this for now. If there comes a time it makes sense, I'm sure they will do it.

True, but the Sprint Galaxy S II (4.56") and hte Nexus Prime (rumored 4.67") has nearly the same size display as the Titan, but are also thinner and lighter than the titan. In fact, the Nexus Prime seems like it will be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 4S, despite a display that is 1.1" bigger. AMOLED makes a huge difference.

When the iPhone gets a major redesign and becomes significantly thinner, it will be because Apple is using some sort of OLED display. I guarantee it.
