Now imagine this is bad, Apple Maps bad.
What would be left of the 16e that's already a failure by design?
If the 16e works the way its specs suggest it should work, it seems like the best iPhone in value. Seems like it will cannibalize 16 sales pretty dramatically and I suspect even 16 Pro sales. Fast processor and good battery are key specs. After that I'd say camera quality and features is next most important and obviously the 16e doesn't compete well with 16 or 16 Pro in that regard. So it becomes a trade off: do you want to pay $599 or do you want to pay $999 and get the better camera but give up a bit on battery life (chip speed difference will be unnoticeable).

There is only one top secret in the secret lab, the comparison chart with Qualcomm modem :)
This. Looking forward to the real world tests. Pretty sure Gen 1 Apple modem will not be as good as QCOM on all criteria. If there are no lawsuits and Apple is allowed to iterate then there is no reason that Apple won't be able to improve.

Glad they finally came out with a modem. Very exciting to see the power efficiency. Cook should have been pouring tons of R&D into this a long time ago stead of things like a car or Vision Pro goggles. Better late than never though.

While a testing lab is important, where Intel and Apple have failed with RF is in real world use. It might work great in the lab, but how does it perform with 1000s of other devices nearby?

Apparently you didn’t watch the video.

There was a section in the video that stated they tested all over the place; from highly condensed sporting events to rural areas, etc. And on 180 networks in 55 countries.

Well they bought Intel’s modem division at the end of 2019. So a little over 5 years of R&D to actual shipping product is not that long.

It took 4 years for their custom ARM CPUs to land after the acquisition of P.A. Semi.

Does it have AI like the Qualcomm chips? my 16 Pro holds onto signals like its got a iron grip, better than my 14 Pro, I just don’t trust Apple to get such a polished chip with amazing battery life without missing features. Time will tell, after all its designed to save Apple money and give us "reliable connectivity" but does it have Apples equivalent of Qualcomm's features of the X75?

  • Qualcomm® 5G AI Suite Gen 2 includes
    • Sensor modem RF solution for mmWave beam management
    • AI-enhanced channel state feedback (CSF)
    • AI-enhanced antenna tuning
    • AI-enhanced GNSS Location Gen 2
  • Qualcomm® 5G AI Processor Gen 2 with dedicated tensor accelerator
  • Converged mmWave-sub6 Transceiver
  • 3GPP Release 17 and Release 18 support
  • Qualcomm® QTM565 mmWave module
  • Qualcomm® Advanced Modem-RF Software Suite includes
    • Qualcomm® Smart Network Selection Gen 2
    • Qualcomm® DSDA Gen 2 (Dual Data)
    • Advanced Interference Cancelation
  • Qualcomm® 5G PowerSave Gen 4
  • Qualcomm® Smart Transmit™ Gen 4 technology with Snapdragon® Satellite support
  • Qualcomm® Power RF Efficiency Suite
  • Qualcomm® RF Downlink Boost
Great list of Qualcomm X75 modem features but iPhone only use Qualcomm X71 modem [at best]. So the bar for the C1 chip is a notch lower, but it still needs to be proven if the Apple C1 modem can match even this lower performance level. Hope the Apple C1 modem is successful but it has yet to be proven

Interesting to see the behind the scenes.
I was disappointed by how little behind the scenes footage there actually was. There was twenty seconds of shots of some vaguely technical looking areas with very little explanation of what we were actually seeing, and then gives minutes of… well, nothing really.

The powerful CPU is pointless for most smartphone tasks. The USB-2 limits it drastically for file transfer. And the binned GPU means it won't benefit from the better CPU or run modern games well, will be left in the dust very soon as far as on device rendering goes (even AI).
The good battery must be because the screen is dimmer too.

I do not believe in this product, but people will buy what they can.

…when exactly do you think Apple started pouring money into developing their own modems?

You may not like it but that doesn't mean I didn't.

They knew 5G was on the horizon probably by the early days of 4G. They should have been working on it when the iPhone 5 was introduced.

Same reason why they developed their own spin on ARM processors: 50% control freaks and 50% clever marketing. Now they can control the whole manufacturing process while claiming that you can’t get their tech anywhere else than in Apple products.

LOL. Not even sure how to respond to this?

Uh, I suppose Apple should’ve started working on their own car in 2001?

Apple only started working on it when they decided they needed to. In 2012, Apple had only just released their own custom CPU. They were just getting started with bringing everything in house. Cell modems were probably not even on their radar at the time, because there wasn’t a need for it. Apple v Qualcomm lawsuit started in 2017.

Come on. Apple silicon is clearly distinct from Arm designs and have been for years.

Yes it’s about control, but because Apple has goals for their products that nobody else seemed to give a damn about until they were trounced by Apple.

Regarding modems, Qualcomm has a stranglehold on the market and Apple has been working to free themselves from that burden.

It is the strong CPU in the 11 that you use that is probably the key feature that is allowing you to continue to use it today nearly 6 years after its release. I predict the 16e will also have tremendous lifespan because of the CPU it has in it. Then the great battery will give it a great lifespan as well.

What percentage of iPhone users do you think do wired file transfer more than once a month? I'd be surprised if that percentage is over 5% and that group is going to have a lot of professionals who will be buying Pro iPhones. And the CPU is going to run Angry Birds and Candy Crush just fine, so don't worry about gaming, it will do it just fine.

I think it will sell well and be a workhorse for years.
