You'd like to think the British energy consumption chart would be based on the power consumption of the display acting as a display, and not based on throughout of power to other devices...

...and if you do want that all-in-one convenience? Well, we're back to all those 27" iMac users who've just been thrown under a bus.

Hey, I’m all in on all-in-one systems. The iMac has been the best AIO in the past 20 years…. I’ve owned; Mac SE (still have), Bondi iMac, iMac DV, iMac G4, first Intel iMac, and finally 27” Core-i7 iMac - 2009 (still use).

I was ready to upgrade my 27” iMac in 2020, but then Apple said they were moving to Apple Silicon, so I decided to wait… well actually I bought an M1 mini when they first came out, and use my iMac as a display for it … figured that would hold me over until the 27” iMac made the switch. But that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen now.

Do I feel like I’ve been “thrown under a bus”? Nope. Am I disappointed? Yep. Am I going to whine about it? Nope. I’m going to keep using what I have until a Mac comes along that I feel would be worth buying and upgrading to. The mini is a great system, so I’ll probably wait and see what the M2 brings to the table, or just continue to wait for the rerelease of a larger iMac.

I still believe this will come back to haunt Apple really, really badly. People that want the iMac for this entire All-In-One-craze they themselves started (and which I can not understand, but well, you do you) will rather keep their old iMac 2018 rather than upgrading to the Studio + Display.

The machine most people would have wanted and would have gladly paid 2.5K for was a 27 inch iMac with M1 Pro, 16 gigs of ram and a Terabyte of Storage. I really wonder what their market analysts are smoking to conclude abandoning the iMac is the right move.

Well, this is the internet, where literally everybody and their dog uses hyperbole 110% of the time. :)

You're disappointed - that's the point. People "whining" here are discussing their disappointment. Nobody here is proposing to sue Apple and force them to make the machine that they feel entitled to.

Also, you're "lucky" in that you have a 2009, 1440p iMac which can be used as an external display with a Mini and hasn't spoiled you with 5k.

I've just checked: Mac Mini with those specs and a Studio Display together are $2,898.00 - so pretty close to 2.5K actually. And next time you want a new computer this price is cut down to less than half as you can keep the display.

Considering what the inside of the Studio Display looks like in terms of cooling and design, it does seem to have been designed to eventually handle an M2 Pro so we may yet see the return of the iMac 5K and $2500 would probably cover an M2 Pro, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD.

(The days of an $1800-2000 iMac 5K are dead - that market is now covered by the 24" iMac).

Wait... I'm lucky that I don't feel entitled to something better?! Umm, I have an iPad Pro and an iPhone 12 mini, both have extremely sharp displays... When using my new mini w/iMac, the difference in resolution from those other devices is jarring. So yeah, I know there's a huge difference.

By the way, you can connect your 5K iMac to another Mac via a Thunderbolt port and just use screen sharing. You'd be surprised just how well that works. For the most part it's how I continue to use my iMac (although, I use screen sharing over ethernet, so it's a little slow... but that could also something to do with performance issues of my old iMac). And in setting my iMac on top my mini, it still looks like an all-in-one system.

A note on entitlement...

I'm not beholden to Apple and neither are they to me. Apple is company that, for the most part, makes products I enjoy using - I have for almost 40 years now*. I don't buy every Apple product that they release, nor do I feel the need to, in fact I probably use their products a lot longer than the average person; 2009 iMac replaced (but still used) with a 2020 M1 mini. Original iPhone SE from 2016, just replaced in 2021 with a 12" mini. Original iPad (2010), replaced in 2016 with iPad Pro, which I still use (but hope to replace this year).

*Over those years I've used (and supported) a lot of different computers; DOS, Unix, every version of Windows. Even to this day people still have me fix their computers, some Macs, mostly Windows laptops and I use OpenBSD for my web server. So I know what's available... I'm not stuck in some Apple bunker isolated from the rest of the world.

Completely agree. A larger iMac model is coming eventually. I don't think Apple could make what they wanted with this first round of SoCs, but it will return with both an Mx Pro and Mx Max. The same with the Mac mini; we'll finally get an Mx Pro mini when Apple feels there's a performance margin they can reach. We won't really know until Apple has more SoCs to choose from and spread across more models.

Sure - that's a great way of using an iMac as a secondary display, or for something like a headless server where you only occasionally need to use the desktop. I wouldn't choose it as a viable solution for a primary display - and if you're getting lag on a 1440p display, it's going to be a lot worse on a 5k display shifting 4x as much data...

...is only an issue if someone wants to try and compel Apple to produce the products they think they deserve. The only "entitlement" being exercised here is the entitlement to criticise their products.

Apple still sells an Intel Mac Mini. Perhaps it’s the “next 2012 MacBook Pro” that hangs around for 5 years without updates, but perhaps it suggests a higher-end Mac Mini is coming.

Oh - I absolutely agree to this logic. Actually I am very happy that apple is offering displays separately. But I just cannot imagine the customer base is. I alone know 6 people that absolutely swear by using iMacs, all of which are furious that they now will have to have an extra box on the table, with those pesky wires and, well, stuff.

If the studio display was actually 32" I'd buy it. But I'm not willing to spend what translates to north of 7000 dollars for the XDR. 2.5K for a decent 32 inch IPS panel with 6K resolution .... yeah, I can see that. Maybe we'll get that eventually. ?‍♂️

Keep hoping, but I'm afraid that's over.

If Apple never makes another large iMac I personally am okay with it. The Apple Studio Display is perfectly acceptable for me and if they make a better version (even if it's $2500 vs. $1600) I am okay with that because it would be a monitor I would use for a decade, easy.

I bought an Intel 2020 iMac 5K late last year for WFH so I am years away from getting my next Apple Silicon Mac (I have a 14" MBP) and by then I expect the Mac mini on M3/M4 will be more than enough for what I need.

Ethernet on my iMac is 1Gb, Thunderbolt 3 on a modern iMac is 40Gb, that's 40x theoretical bandwidth. And I also wouldn't use this as a primary display, but it is possible and a completely workable setup.

if they are going to put all this into it, they should have built an AppleTV in it instead. this way it gets some usage as a stand alone
