I still can't get over how this display has 2 fans in it. Does the Pro Display XDR have them also?
Yes. There are fans in the 32" Pro Display XDR. (They are apparently essentially silent though.)

Of note though, that display is 1600 nits (or 1000 nits full screen sustained), so (in HDR mode) it can go way, way brighter than the 27" Studio Display.

I've heard of people having flown with planes and zeppelins, and even carpets, but monitors, this must be a Gen Y thing?

Gen X here. I have a custom canvas bag and bring the monitors in the original box slid into the brown shipping box.

This thing is really packing, it looks like a full computer components. I am more forgiving of the price now.

Because they jammed more stuff into it?

I'd rather have a much lower price and less stuff that will get old and needs cooling (with no way to clean the fans)

And this is the M1 iMac...I just don't get it....The M1 iMac is an ENTIRE computer (and an amazing one at that.) This is just a display (albeit with an A13). How does this have so much more space filled with circuit boards and WAY bigger fans?

I mean whatever....its the display that many people have been pleading Apple to make (a 27" iMac display without the iMac) at the price they were asking for. I just can't help but scratch my head looking at this picture, and knowing it has a full A13 computer inside as well. Either they could just make this an actual computer by installing macOS on it, or they could have designed a simpler display with lower component costs.

Apples Mac teams have been firing on all cylinders since the dawn of M1, don't get me wrong, but I really think this product could have used a little better product management. Even if for the sake of improving margins by lowering BOM cost. It is nice that they wanted to make Center Stage work on Intel Macs, but was it really worth it? I don't think there would have been anything wrong having Spatial Audio and Center Stage exclusive to M1 Macs. Wide angle only for Intel Macs, Center Stage for Apple Silicon Macs.

This makes no sense for a display tech from almost a decade ago that was put in the 5K iMac’s back then.

Unless Apple plans to unlock capabilities of these monitors which doesn’t make sense either.

This thing has iMac written all over it. I’d not be surprised if Ross Young rumoured upcoming 27” MiniLed display turns out to be 27” iMac M1Pro/Max only (no Ultra cooling or coolness).
Not in market for AIO but Rejoice: black bezels chinless iMac!

To state the obvious: this has an internal PSU, the M1 iMac doesn't. If it's anything like the previous 27 inch it's also probably around double the wattage of the 24 inch (140W vs 310W)

The LG 5k monitor apparently draws 140W by itself.

Height adjustability of monitors is actually required to meet office health and safety rules in many countries. The goal is to promote good ergonomics and avoid injuries such as neck strain. I'm surprised we haven't heard more about this with the iMac since it has the same flaw.
I've seen countless iMacs and displays sitting on books, bricks or stones in the last "studios" I've worked. Ergonomics are important - especially when your job is not 9 to 5 but rather 8 to 10 or 12.

If you spend the £400 on a stack of books instead of the overpriced height adjustable stand, you'll own some VERY nice books...

This monitor has the A13 bionic processor and its not running iOS nor supports Face ID, high refresh rates, touchscreen and lacks HDR at this price (shameful with no remorse on Apple's part). What was Apple thinking and at what point do people not give in to a 27 inch monitor by Apple? Resolution and speakers do not make a good all around monitor and the processor is being wasted. Its just typical Apple putting there processors in some device when it's unnecessary.

Here's the internals of the previous Studio Display, not much has changed

How’s there more computer inside here than in the M1 iMac?
If you read the original post, 3/4 of the "computer" in the Studio Display is power-supply - 24" iMac has an external power brick.

Also, on the 24", virtually the whole "computer" is in the chin and uses the full thickness of the case - and the fans are either side of the M1, blowing air directly over the M1's heatsink.

Everything in the Studio Display has to fit behind the display panel. It also looks to me like the components are very spread-out - possibly to keep everything thin and avoid any "hot spots" affecting the display. I guess it's using the back panel as a heat spreader... If the article is right about where the A13 chip is, then the fans are nowhere near it - but then it's an iPhone chip and since when did an iPhone need a fan?

And it could be since it has A13 in it. Too bad you can't run full iOS on it, even if just for sh!ts and giggles. Or even better, run macOS on A13. It would actually run as fast as a 2015 era iMac.

Wonder if there's a radio (WiFi or bluetooth)? Would be great if it could double as an tv.

I'd rather have it made of plastic and pay a lower price.
I'd rather have poor color correction and pay a lower price.
I'd rather it didn't have a camera or speakers and pay a lower price.
I'd rather it only had a single HDMI input and no other ports and pay a lower price.
I'd rather it was 4k instead of 5k and pay a lower price.

It is too bad there aren't other displays on the market you could choose to purchase. :/

Still doesn’t make much sense. The display is considerably thicker than the iMac, there’s more tech in it then in the iMac and it’s power brick combined.
It can’t be just for power supply.

Remind me, how much RAM does an A13 have compared to a 2015 iMac? And how far away are the fans from the CPU/Heatsink in an iMac?
