Why is everyone so keen to use their iPad as their main computer?? It's more restrictive, it's nowhere near as full-featured as a Mac, it has an inherently different style of working that doesn't allow multiple windows, it's harder to customize and tinker with and moreover, it’s no longer even cheaper than a Mac. I’m not anti-iPad - I love mine, but I just don’t aspire for it to replace my Mac, which I also love. It’s great to use when I’m out and about or when I’m in bed or sitting on the couch, but it’s definitely NOT great to use when I’m sitting on a desk spending a day at the office doing intensive office stuff.

Ok. Stupid question time. I’m considering jumping into an iPad Pro. I really like what I see in the 12.9. And my plan is to also purchase the Magic Keyboard when it comes out in May. I really want to be able to use a keyboard and mouse/trackpad.

Here’s the dumb question: If I we’re to order today and get the iPad next week, what could I use for the next month and a half until the Magic Keyboard comes out?

thanks

The Logitech MXAnywhere mouse works fine. A standard Apple keyboard will also work, though is less portable, obviously. Not sure about other, cheaper BT keyboards.

The flexibility of a groups mind is astonishing.
When I asked for exactly the mouse / trackpad support years ago, I was a little bit downvoted.
Now nearly everybody is happy to get more usability for the ipad.

You make a very valid point, I think for me the attraction is the portability and versatility of having a best in class tablet that doubles as the device I pay my bills with, but then again, when you get the 12.9 model + the magic keyboard, your basically back in square one, as the bulk and the weight shouldnt be too different from a MBA. But, in terms of graphic performance, screen quality, webcam, refresh rate, speakers... I dont know, I think hardware wise the iPad Pro is way ahead of even the MBP 13", even if the OS experience is fundamentally different.

Just to give a little context, I have a 2019 MBA that I mainly do app and web development with, I also have an iPhone XR, the graphic performance on the iPhone runs circles around the MBA, as it would on any Intel integrated graphics solution (ie.: mac mini, even the entry MBP 13). iOS devices, both hardware and the OS itself, have grown from an optimization and performance focused approach that make them feel much more polished, fluid and stable. iPad and iPhones, recent bugs aside, are a joy to use. But, we might be after an utopia of portability, workspace, flexibility/openness, etc. The perfect all-in one device, even as we seem to get closer, might not exist.

How is the iPad removed from the keyboard without the keyboard moving? Is it bolted down or does it weight 10 pounds?
i also fear it is going to be quite heavy. Probably going to make it heavier than an Air!

People didn’t know what they were missing. I had mouse support using jailbroken iphones and ipads, and really used it. Thankfully Apple finally wisened up and gave us the option on ipads.

Nope. I have both and nothing works unfortunately :(((

The trackpad is particularly useless.
You will be able to pair but you will not get the settings for two fingers tap or for scrolling. This makes it impossible to use and you need to do touch screen to make basic operations.

I don't get the logic behind (technically)... Financially it may make sense...

The article is incorrect. Only Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2 function with scrolling and gestures.
I am using the MX 3 and scrolling works fine. Pushing the thumb button enables expose and right click works too.

IPHONE - CALL,SURF FB
IPAD - home usage, meeting typewriting, notes.. , gaming
MACBOOK PRO 2011 - travel meeting/projector
IMAC - workhorse computer

** I would say, each tool have their own job.

Can you access the dictate function? Or did they just I don’t know forget that function so I have to press and hold on the down arrow till the keyboard pops up wait press the micophone button?

It almost look like iMac miniature from a sight.

- we can now place the iPad high enough on the desk for an ergonomic working environment
- all used Apps on the desk are continued for 100% on the couch because it's the same device
- I have nearly all required Desktop Apps on my iPad minus Xcode and a native Terminal/Unix shell

What's now missing left, is full Keyboard and Trackpad support for some Apps and in iOS 14 external Monitor support with windowed Desktop interface. But the Pointer support is a gigantic step into the right direction.

Yes, a Mouse it works. I am using a mouse too and that is fine.

The Apple’s Original Trackpad and Magic Mouse 1 are not working.
Gestures, scrolling, tapping and 2 fingers right click, these are dead.
And it’s crazy because they are Apple products which they decided not to support :)

I guess this depends on the use case.
For example, when I used to travel, I was carrying my iPad pro rather than the Macbook pro 15 inch.
I found it easier to handle security checks, and basic working but I needed the Mouse and KB to some extent.

I don’t know how many are using iPad Pro only exclusively, I doubt many..., but probably this is directed towards them too.
It is obviously less efficient than a MBP for office type job, but still manage-able.

Which is odd as it’s suppose to work with all trackpads

I hope, Apple still have plans to improve the iPad/iPad OS as a TOUCH device and not using the cheap and easy way out, by slowly making the iPad into a laptop.
Still don't understand, why they removed the (very helpful) magnifying glass while selecting text. Instead of trying to think how you could make this task easier on a touchscreen, Apple made it worse (deliberately?). 🤔

So it seems, at this stage, that the 1st gen trackpad and magic mouse scrolling and gestures don't work. If its not due to a technical issue, and given Apple's supposedly evironmental tick of approval, to put it mildly, this does not look good.

The iPad Pro has a symmetrical bezel but Apple can't make it look alike on the MBA, MBP?? WHAT KIND OF RIDICULOUS DESIGN FLAW APPLE IS TRYING TO MAKE!

This reminds me of a keynote from Steve Jobs where he said system 7 was created to do one thing and as things started to develop, they kept adding technologies and addons and legacy software to it until it became basically a heavy bloat freak. Then he abandoned it on OS9 and jumped ship to OS X.

The vast majority of people who use computers are part of the flat-world (1 window) society of Windows. The iPad supports multiple window work perhaps better than Windows but not nearly as well as macOS. This advance does not replace macOS machines but does replace nearly all non-hax0z 377T Windows systems with an ultra-light-weight high power “appliance” style device which most “i don’t know sh** about computers so I bought Windows because my neighbor has it” types buy.

No doubt. You need ask Tim Cook because Apple employees is removing features that people find it useful.

For instance, the Dasboard needs to get an update on 10.15 but now you can't even use it. Notification center on macOS is too narrow for bigger widget and unusable. 👺

It is. Somehow I am still hoping this will change for the next week's release... however, somehow I doubt it.

I have a full set of first gen Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad and keyboard (from when I used them with my rMBP and monitor), so I had hoped the trackpad would work with 13.4.

But I was not willing to wait to see if Apple made changes to the final iPadOS release, so I sprang for a new gray Trackpad 2, which I’ll have early next week. Just trying the old trackpad with the iPad was enough of a good experience that I knew I wanted to start using it as soon as possible

Given I’m not traveling for work right now, I can use a more proper desktop setup with my 12.9” iPP, which will be awesome while waiting for the new keyboard cover to launch (and things to get back to “normal” in the world).

It needs 16:9 support for external monitors.

If it has that, the iPad might be my new PC.

Can you explain that a little more in detail? Can't you connect any kind of display with USB-C? Definitely it need to support the "extend display" mode and not only the "mirrored display" mode...

I am currently in the process of converting to my iPad Pro as my main device. I have the 2018 1TB version. 2 things are keeping it from being a full conversion once the new keyboard comes out. External display at 16X9 and the ability to back it up without an itunes account on a iMac. I wish you could do a full back up to an external HD.

Anyone else using it as their only computer?

Apple catching up to Microsoft Surface finally? I bought a Surface Go a couple of months ago and trackpad/mouse support on an iPad-like device is pretty awesome...

Now these Tablets can truly replace your computer...

If you connect to a monitor, there will be giant black bars on the left and right. It looks stupid.

Because you get the best of both worlds.
