"Here's How Apple's New MacBook Pro Compares to Last Year's Model".

Soldered everything inside? Apple should use standard ports and components, not soldered. And why is the very same make and model of RAM purchased from Apple Store two to three times more expensive than in retailers like Amazon?

Or add one goddam millemeter of thickness and make the battery as robust as it was on the 2015 macbook pro. But I know, nobody would buy a laptop that ridiculously thick.
I don't disagree with that, just stating what apple has said in the past as to why.

You can get 512 GB in an iPad now! Also, 512 GB thumb drives and SD cards are available and for a pretty reasonable price in $/GB. 128 GB of non-upgradable storage on a laptop marketed as "Pro" in 2017 is a joke.

Apple knows few people in their right mind will order this cripplingly low amount of storage. They only did it to get the "starting from" price down.

Apple are kidding themselves if they think people can't see through their tactics.

We will not see anymore update to the notebooks until next year. How will current generation 15-inch MacBook Pro owners feel about another surprise update just 3 months later?

I was hoping we would see another update in 3 months but:
  1. This update was more significant than a mid-cycle silent CPU speed bump
  2. It doesn't look like Coffee Lake will be ready by September (Apple's typically one of the last to ship the latest and greatest from Intel)

Guessing we have at least another 200 days to go before there MIGHT be a 32GB MBP :(

Lucky Americans, the prices are the same for you guys. In EU, the "15 inch MacBook prices increased by another €150 (~$170). It also take 3-4 weeks to ship!!!

For me it's actually cheaper to buy a ticked to New York, buy a MacBook and go back home on the same day...
Don't forget that in the US the prices are without VAT. In Europe the prices shown are including VAT.

I find it much more sensible to show the full final price one has to pay as opposed to a price without tax.

I'll take a 10-20% increase in speed. That alone is worth buying a 2017 over a refurb'ed 2016. For location shoots and on-the-fly edits this new MBP will be perfect. Beats lugging around my 27" iMac...

I bought the 128gb version. I managed a law firm with my last machine, and rarely used more than 20-30gb locally. I was going to buy a MBP anyway, Apple just saved me $200. Just because your needs require a ton of local storage, doesn't mean that fits the need of every user.

It really isn't. There's a reason Chromebooks and things are catching on, more and more people don't need to store all their media locally anymore (I know I don't).

If 128GB is enough for you - then you are one of the folks Tim Cook is targeting when he talks about the IPad Pro as a laptop replacement. You could save even more money and by an iPad pro or macbook air.

Apple will not be ready for Coffee lake by October, trust me. Look for coffee in early 2018. They may even hold off till June at the WWDC.

2017 is better in almost everyway
1) better cpu and gpu
2) better keyboard
3) proper 10-11hours

I was really curious about 2 and 3. Are you using one?

I have had this machine since November and I still dislike the keyboard. The size of the keys and the spacing is better than the crappy chicklet style keyboards from before, and the actual shape of the keys is also an improvement, but the travel is terrible. I really have to adjust my typing when I'm working on the keyboard. I'll check it out at the Apple Store next time I'm near one I guess.

Battery life has been mediocre. It has adequate battery life for my own needs but it's definitely not 10 hours, and usually tops out around like... 6.

Those are about my only complaints with the machine. It was really unstable at first, but since 10.12.4 it's been rock solid.

The Touch Bar is really underwhelming most of the time, but honestly? TouchID and being able to customer my control strip are decidedly superior function keys for my workflow.

I honestly really like this machine. Although the 13" barely drives a 5K. I was considering an upgrade because of that but I'll likely hold off until I need more storage space. I think the availability of a quad core on the 13" would be about the only thing that would drive me to upgrade this year or next year.

iPad Pro is catching up: 3832 single core vs. 4019 for the fastest 2016 13" MBP, and 9091 vs. 8001 for the fastest 2016 13" MBP. Sources: http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/3036382, https://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks

Does anyone know if Intel is working on graphene chips or quantum computing? This is getting crazy.

Edit: Looks like some more scores have been trickling in today: http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/search?utf8=✓&q=iPad7,3

New record so far: 3929/9372

Apple's secret is giving the macs gimped CPUs to make the iPad look good. Try the i7-7700k http://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/3057739

And that's just a basic consumer CPU that's relatively cheap at $300.

Dell's fastest server clocks in at 83,000 multicore (using 4 high end Xeon chips). Just to show how great Apple is at keeping the bar low.

128gb storage = embarrassing.
It is, as is the $200 to upgrade to 256 and $400 to upgrade to 512, both of which I'm guessing costs Apple a lot less than $100. But then Apple's been price gouging on storage for years, so this is no surprise.

But they are pushing iCloud Drive for offloading more and more of the stuff that used to live on your hard drive or SSD (downloading on demand). So for a lot of people 128 GB could be enough, provided that they shell out $ every month for cloud storage and are OK with putting their files on the cloud in the first place and always have an internet connection. It's just another way of getting the money out of you though.

Some people only need e-mail/Internet computer and for that 128gb is plenty. All the other storage options from the last year are available, so i do not understand your point.

In my household, I am the only one that eclipses 100GB (and I do by a lot). Additionally, machines for education and office work rarely need that much space. If you're not storing local copies of video, photos, or music there's a really good chance you don't need the space.

Releasing anything, especially a premium laptop with 128GB of storage in 2017, should be considered a crime.

So then both Dell and HP are guilty of this crime??

Last time I checked both of them have premium laptops and both are starting with 128GB which is probably like 3x slower than what's in Macbook pro. Also if I am not mistaken, XPS 13 starts with 4 GB of memory.

And note that the $300 retina screen surcharge not only includes the retina upgrade. It also includes wider gamut, higher contrast, wider viewing angle screen (IPS vs TN). Plus TB3
That's exactly the biggest shortcoming of the 2016/2017 MBPs. TB3/USB-C exclusive might be understandable to configure a computers 5 years from now. At present, it cannot even be considered "survivable".

Well obviously a MacBook Pro 13" isn't comparable to the top end iMac or the fastest server Dell makes, lol.

I was comparing the iPad to the MBP 13" because they're both mobile devices targeted at professionals. At least on paper.

The big question for me is does the new model actually get 10 hours battery life. I don't know one single person who does.
