The problem is that the 6 digit numeric passcodes aren’t very secure. You should have a 12+ character alphanumeric code with special characters, and that’s a real pain to type in every time. The X isn’t worth losing TouchID for me.
Seeing the FBI paid more than $1 million to gain access to San Bernardino terrorist Syed Farook's iPhone for their hacking services I would say it's pretty secure. Don't forget you got ten tries before the phone erases all data if you have it turned on.

I'm assuming FaceID will not work as fast and seamless as TouchID (granted I'm basically just assuming the worst because I've never actually used FaceID).

You know what they say about assuming?.....

You will not need to use the passcode EVERY TIME. You're overrating. On my iPhone 7 Plus I still use the passcode off and on. Who cares. It's literally 2-3 seconds of your life. People these days are too lazy and impatient. Users are LITERALLY crying over 2-3 seconds. Sadly, it's a clear reflection of the type of instant gratification society we live in.

I know that. I was responding to a hypothetical about how it would suck to go back to not having TouchID or FaceID.

Yes, so 10 tries on a 6 digit numerical code is inherently less secure than 10 tries on a 12+ character alphanumeric code, especially when you consider that most people don’t choose truly random PINs, usually something associated with something in their lives so they can remember it more easily.

For me, it’s not even so much the inconvenience of having to type a passcode; it’s having to go back to remembering passwords for banking, etc. Even for my password management app! I preordered the 8+ and am thrilled that it’ll be here Friday. I don’t begrudge anyone their choices and am really very curious to see how well Face ID works on the X when it finally launches; it just wasn’t for me this time around. :)
You are talking as if this convenience is going away, everything you said is going to work the exact same way except now it will be more secure and you don't have to touch the phone. Face ID works the same as Touch ID for all of those experiences.

How did I ever survive without Touch ID on my

original iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
and finally iPhone 5?

Simple: I used a good ole passcode

What's another year of passcode until iPhone 11 (likely called iPhone Pro) arrives next year with both Face ID and Touch ID (hopefully)
Some of us don't just burn cash buying upgrades to our phones every year. Not saying I couldn't do it, but I think its seems wasteful to buy a new phone this year, just to replace it the next. I like a little bit more of a relationship with my phone. 1 year seems a little short.

Am I missing something? Why do you have to go back to memorizing passwords?

If FaceID isn't a worthy replacement for TouchID then I will survive by returning my X and getting an iPhone 8 or going back to a Note 8. No way in hell am I going back to the dark days of typing in my passcode

You're missing the point. Ten tries phone gets wiped. If you don't have ten tries and your out turned on you are absolutely correct because using brute force eventually you will get in. Hell, 24 + character alphanumeric code is more secure than 12 + character alphanumeric code. I feel pretty confident with my 6 digit numerical code will be secure enough unless the government wants to spend a million dollars to crack it.

It was based on the assumption (yeah, I know) that Face ID might not be thoroughly integrated right away with all apps currently using Touch ID for authentication. Hell, I have one bank that just began utilizing Touch ID maybe 3 months ago. So I, personally, will wait a year for the dust to settle and everybody to get on the same page and then pick up the 2nd iteration for myself. But that’s me.

I see...thanx.

Good news is that any apps that currently support TouchID will immediately work with FaceID. Now that doesn't address apps that haven't implemented either but it's still a huge chunk of apps that will have support out the box.

It’s my opinion. What do you mean by "I'm in no position to pass comment?".

I mean you’re not yet entitled to your opinion. Have you seen it? Have you held it? Have you read any substantial reviews? No, you haven’t. You’re yelling from the sideline based on nobody knows what.

I never even got an iPhone till the 5S, so put off was I by the thought of entering archaic passcodes all day. On Android I was used to the swipe pattern. When TouchID appeared I knew it was a time to join.

That may be true, but if you reread my first post in this thread, I said it is a detriment by not having it in the ipX.

FaceID may or may not work wonderfully...we don't know at this point. And it doesn't matter.

By choosing to remove TouchID from the ipX, Apple has taken away FP validation as a means of unlocking your phone.

I, for one...value and treasure TouchID.

It's a proven technology that's works and works whether I look at the phone or not, unlike FaceID.

Even if it is possible to duplicate FP for every 1:50000 people as opposed to 1:1,000,000 for FaceID (according to Apple)...by removing TouchID from the phone, Apple has taken away a useful and convenient way of unlocking the phone.

Apple is pushing face authentication and android manufactures will follow. Fingerprint authentication will slowly die. You guys remind me of people that want ethernet port on their laptop.

Edit: I'm so freaking tired of not being able to authenticate due to sweaty fingers etc.
Why would android follow when many of them already have facial recognition for unlocking.

I don't see the big deal in losing half a second (if that), of which you're not even using the phone, before it's raised.

Have any of these people unlocking from within their pockets even seen the many hands-on videos showing how Face ID isn't the scary monster they think it is?
