Touch ID is not coming back. Apple declared Face ID more secure and superior. Offering Touch ID in the next model will be a step backward.

You could always return and buy an 8/8+.

Why would android follow when many of them already have facial recognition for unlocking.

Because facial recognition on android is nothing like Face ID it is basically the least secure method to secure your android phone it even has to pop up a warning letting you know that it isn't secure.

Edit: I'm so freaking tired of not being able to authenticate due to sweaty fingers etc.

FP authenticarion works 100% of the time for me. Serious. It's why I like it so much.

I don't have sweaty fingers. I'm blessed.
