Good to know. Spending $200 for another light seal is simply too much.

They can’t just wait 10 years. What’s going to change in ten years if no one works on it now? Nothing. No product is ever done, especially without public feedback. Eventually you have to ship something.
I don't agree with that. Apple has always been good at holding products in development until they're ready. There's no reason this one has to be different

Thanks for replying instead of just smacking disagree.

I do see your point. A certain former CEO probably would have pushed for a lot more polish and would probably have nixed a few things that made it into the first release.

On the other hand, the original iPhone looks really primitive looking back on it and had a lot of glaring omissions. And I’m not sure the tech for the headset is even where the tech for the iPhone was then.

I’m going to reserve judgement for a few more versions. This one definitely could have / should have been better, but I don’t think they really intended it to be mass market just yet. The fitting process alone could use some refinement and feedback.

Also, all signs are that they have already waited nearly ten years. And early reviews already say that some of what they are trying to do just may not be possible. I don’t know if the level of polish of even the first iPod or iPhone is possible yet.

Let’s hope they iterate fast and in the right directions.

It’s also magnetic on both sides (VP and Cushion) and pretty easy to swap.

I was at Best Buy yesterday and saw they were selling replacement cushions for the Oculus VR headset for $20 or $30.

Obviously it's a completely different product - it actually got good reviews, for one thing - but it goes to show the difference in ethos between Meta and Apple, at least with this product category.

All the iPad comparisons are moot. I can hand my iPad to anyone and let them look. I am not sure th point of shooting 3D pictures and video and not being able to share them.

I did hand the AVP to my wife and she was able to enter my passcode and use them, though the eye tracking was not great, at least she could look at a video and choose whether to realign it or not.

I can see light seals being an aftermarket item. Different options for fabrics and shapes could be a thing. I know that I found the little stick on mesh they used at the store for the demo to be more comfortable on my forehead than the actual seal so I would expect these to become available as well.

Lack of true multi user support is absolutely the biggest failure for me on the device along with the lack of Home Sharing in the TV app. I am still trying to figure how to add my ripped dvds and BD's to the library. I guess they could be in an album in Photos but that would be a kludge. I will be experimenting with airdropping to the files app.

The light Seal is the full spacer between the foam and the main unit. Not much reason to ever replace it unless lost or broken. It is the $199 part and comes with two cushions.

The cushions would be the more consumable part and are $29.
