Apple said the first vehicles with next-generation CarPlay would arrive in 2024. It didn't happen.

Now what?

We are two weeks into 2025, and Apple has yet to update or remove the 2024 timeframe for next-generation CarPlay advertised on its website. Apple also remains completely silent about whether or not it still plans to launch the system.

There are still a few signs of hope.

First, 9to5Mac recently reported that additional references to next-generation CarPlay were added in iOS 18.3 beta 2's code. Second, MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris today uncovered some additional next-generation CarPlay images that were filed in a EU database last month. Apple previously showed that next-generation CarPlay will feature customizable widgets, and the images provide a closer look at the widget selection screens.

Due to Apple's reluctance to comment on future plans, we do not know if next-generation CarPlay is still happening. Hopefully, Apple will finally provide an update about next-generation CarPlay soon to set the record straight.

Apple first previewed next-generation CarPlay at WWDC 2022, more than two and a half years ago. For now, the wait continues.

Not surprising-- if a car maker has put that much screen real estate into their vehicle, they'll want to control the branding and experience. Current car play replaces the radio interface, but new car play replaces everything.
That would have been the case at any point in CarPlay/Android Auto's history. The fact is that CarPlay 2.0 will make this even easier on manufacturers, and they can skin/brand CarPlay 2.0 any way they want. If you watch the developer videos, they're shown how.

No great loss if it gets dropped.

Make current CarPlay better and stick with that for mobile device-centric functions. Let the auto manufacturers handle the rest. Easy.
The integration with EV's and Apple Maps is crucial. It works somewhat with classic CarPlay, but will be a much better experience with 2.0. I think even this forum that follows these things isn't really paying attention to what CarPlay 2.0 does. For instance, it uploads assets to the car for use at any time - and those assets can be designed by the manufacturer and can be used without the phone. When the phone connects, they synchronize and display a hybrid of the two.

This always seemed like a weird push for me. CarPlay has been fairly stagnant with feature updates, but they think car companies will want to hand over the entire interface to them? Why can't they do things like let me fix a word that Siri misinterpreted when I was sending a text first to show they're making general improvements.

If anything this just shows how little they update the non-high profile areas of their websites.

There’s no hope for CarPlay 2.0 in 2024 unless that secret Time Machine project finally paid off. The other one.

What would I need it for? What extra performance would I get. We can connect our iPhones as we have the existing CarPlay. For radio I use the onboard software and for navigation and traffic a separate Garmin. It might sound complex but works easy. No need for anything. We don't use our on top car manufacturer provided phone car "app" that would be available to us at all.

Maybe if Apple was not so arrogant can manufacturers would be more receptive?
Talk about arrogance, and Apple thought the cell phone network operators were bad.

Then they met the car companies. And without Steve Jobs to march in there and explain in words of one syllable why they’re all crazy if they don’t do it his way.

Could not agree more. I don’t need Apple controlling my car. The manufacturer does that well enough. Just mobile stuff. This is yet another Apple failure in the making.

Consistency for one. Nearly every car handles CarPlay differently. Some launch in a little window, some take over the whole screen, some have "blades", some don't have a touch screen.

Right now, you start the car, you wait for the phone to connect, then you have CarPlay. CarPlay 2.0 will have already connected before you even start the car, and will work without the phone for many functions.

I think this is DOA. I cannot see OEM autos giving Apple control of their dashboards / user experience / car controls. Safety would be first reason, but the second a more likely would be the data they could harvest ahead of the OEM’s. I know Apple is good with privacy, but it’s more the OEM’s would probably like it themselves. Look at how long it’s taken the Apple Car Key to gain any traction. They don’t want to cede any areas of their business to Apple even if the user experience gets improved by doing so.

Who asked for this exactly and how/why is it supposed to be better than current CarPlay? They just improve the current implementation of CarPlay and add support for multiple screens (center console and drivers information display or additional screens if needed).

Building the software is the easy part. Convincing automakers to integrate it into their onboard systems, or even allow CarPlay to be integrated into their onboard systems, that's the hard part. But sure would be nice to say to Siri, "Start the car, open all windows and turn on the A/C."

Everyone needs to relax, because the ALL NEW CarPlay is in the pipeline and the pipeline has never been stronger! We're just 14 days into the new year and Apple has already released several ALL NEW products, including EXCLUSIVE AirTags and wallpapers. Apple thinks you're going to love the ALL NEW CarPlay and can't wait to see the incredible things customers do with the ALL NEW CarPlay!!!
