I want to like this phone, but it's just... not interesting other than wireless charging.

looking at those two screens shots, the cutout thing looks like a gimmick to me and an ugly one. the space it "saves" isn't used for anything in the examples shown in the article. hopefully apple will surprise us with something better

If this is the final product this presentation is going to be interesting. :D

I think it's a monstrosity, but I will buy one. Not a huge deal. I'm more of a function guy, and the ugliness is relative, and should not be an issue.

I mean, if people see mouse ears, and will always see mouse ears, then that would suck, no? :D

I just have a hard time with the cut out. Just seems so off. Awful when in landscape orientation, no?

its very off, i kind of want to hold a judgement and see how it really is but this looks like crap. it'll be interesting to see how it will work out with non apple apps

not all change is good people, have to wait and see.

I agree. I too am holding off on purchasing th 8. I am very excited over what the 8 will offer, but even more excited at what the 8s will offer.
I hear the 12s will use drone technology to hover around over your head 24/7, beaming visible/IR video to your Smart Contacts, for ARkit to overlay information (and bunny ears) upon.

The Mickey Mouse ears have to go.
Points for the first person to port the old X11 Xeyes program, so there's a little eye replacing the indicators in each of those two top spots, and have it use facial recognition to stare at you as you move around - maybe blink in surprise when you suddenly appear in front of it.

I don't think people are saying the notch is innovative. However Apple did stick 3 sensors in there just for 3D scanning....so yeah...that part is innovative. There's also a rumor that the iPhone 8's front facing camera can shoot 4K @ 60FPS

Seriously? Windows Hello. I'm an Apple fan, but c'mon now.

To be honest, it looks like this is what we are getting. Rumors have been on point the last few years. I personally am going to pass on the 8 for this reason, and bet on the 8S having an actual virtual/under screen home button.
That's like hoping the 8 will have a headphone jack again xD

I would prefer this as well, but based on a picture from Home pod software Apple is fully embracing the notch.
Yea also, if they would go this route they couldn't sell the white phone!

OK, so global gestural control of the OS was actually AMAZING on Blackberry 10. I know I know... Blackberry?? But hear me out: I was a mobile UX Designer & spent a couple weeks using a Blackberry z-10 when it launched, just to get to know the OS. And for MONTHS afterwards I continuously tried invoking their "upside down L" gesture to get into the unified messages screen. REALLY great experience.

Everything else on the device was horrible. And not even being able to load Android Apps saved the terrible lack of app eco-system. But that experience has given me hope that adding global gestural control to the iPhone could be a HUGE improvement overall.

EXCITING!

Agree with the first part entirely - I've lived with a BlackBerry Z30 for the past few years and been holding off buying a new phone until the rest of the world caught up! I've used my GF's iPhone 6s fairly extensively and can't get used to how backward it feels to have to press a button to navigate around the phone!

(Your second statement doesn't hold true for me - it's only in the last year or so that I have started to find the app support lacking on the Z30)

How disappointed will you be if Apple does not allow anything in the "ears" either side of the top cut out, other than official things like time, cell info, notifications etc?

So is iOS becoming (dare I say) fragmented? It sounds like there will basically be an iPad version of iOS 11, an "iPhone 8" version with its own gestures, and of course the version still based on the home button for all other devices. Not to mention the "8" introducing a new screen size and aspect ratio.

That's not the point. The point being that the 8 is an early adoption purchase for customers. Apple will add the features that should have been on the 8 to the 8s.

I agree, and I think that is what a lot of people are missing. There was quite a few rumored features that were just flat out not ready in time, so they will most likely find their way into the 8S.

I never expected the time to go into on the the "ears". I think the time should be in the middle below the notch. This would give a lot of space for all the icons. I can't see how they'll fit so many icons just on the left side. The extra benefit of moving the time down is that the "back to app" button would no longer cover up other icons, it could go to the left of the time. I think there's enough vertical space to do that.

Home button iPhones will be killed off next year. It wont be fragmented for long.

I agree we are eventually looking at the end of the physical home button on iphones, but that may not be the case on ipads. Hell they do not even have force/3D touch. Also if they release another SE that keeps the home button around. A physical button is still the most practical thing to use.

Yes, and certainly the tens of millions of people using them will upgraded to the "iPhone 8" and its successor by then! [/sarcasm]

Home button iPhones will still be the most prominent iOS devices for years to come, so for the foreseeable future Apple will need to make sure that iOS is usable for both types of devices (and iPads)

True, I forgot about iPads.

Earlier today, well-connected Apple reporter Mark Gurman said the so-called "iPhone 8" will have a thin software-based bar along the bottom of the home screen, controlled by gestures, in lieu of a physical home button.

Gurman also said the Dock, which houses up to four commonly used apps, will be redesigned with a new interface similar to the one on the iPad version of iOS 11. Above it, there will still be six rows of apps, with up to 24 apps per page.

The status bar is said to be split into left and right sides, which some Apple employees supposedly call "ears" internally. By default, the left side shows the time, while the right side displays Wi-Fi, signal bars, and battery life.

With those details in mind, graphic designer Olivier Charavel created a mockup of what the Home screen could look like on the iPhone 8.

Charavel also shared a mockup of Apple's Health app as an example of what apps could look like on the iPhone 8 accordingly.

Gurman said users can drag the gesture bar up to the middle of the screen to unlock the device. When inside an app, a similar gesture starts multitasking, and users can continue to flick upwards to close the app and go back to the home screen.

Guilherme Rambo shared a video that demonstrates how it could look once the Dock has been summoned, based on Apple's iOS simulator for developers.

Fortunately through my work I am able to get a fresh phone of my choice every year. I have gotten the latest iPhone every year since the 4s. But this is looking more and more like a phone I will skip. I know all this is speculation and rumor until Sept 12 but if it ends up being like the rumors are saying, I will end up with a 7s most likely. I could be wrong and it may be the best thing ever, but I am doubting this phone more than any other year. I know if this is the direction they are going I will have no choice but to adapt in the future but if it is as bad as it looks like it could be, maybe there'll be such a backlash that they will for the first time ever, be forced to backtrack and admit they made a design mistake. I hope I am wrong though.
