Apple released the second beta of iOS 16.3 earlier this week, and so far only one new feature and two other minor changes have been discovered in the software update. It's possible that iOS 16.3 will also include various bug fixes and security updates.

iOS 16.3 should be publicly released within the next month or so, and it is possible that more features will be added in later beta versions. In the meantime, we have provided additional details about the three changes discovered so far below.

Security Keys for Apple IDs

The first iOS 16.3 beta enabled a new Security Keys for Apple ID feature that Apple said will be available globally in early 2023. The feature gives users the option to use hardware security keys to further protect their account. For users who enable this feature, Security Keys strengthens Apple's two-factor authentication by requiring a hardware security key as one of the two factors instead of a verification code from another Apple device.

Apple does not plan to release its own hardware security keys. The feature will rely on third-party security keys available from brands like Yubico, such as the YubiKey 5Ci, which has both Lightning and USB-C connectors for use with iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

HomePod Handoff Prompt

As noted by Max Weinbach on Twitter, the first iOS 16.3 beta added a new prompt to transfer/hand off music from an iPhone to a HomePod. Only the prompt itself is new, as the HomePod audio handoff feature already existed.

Emergency SOS Settings Rewording

In the second beta of iOS 16.3, Apple has tweaked the wording for some Emergency SOS options in the Settings app to be even clearer.

"Call with Hold" is now "Call with Hold and Release," "Call with 5 Presses" is now "Call with 5 Button Presses," and "Countdown Sound" is now "Call Quietly." The descriptions for each have also been updated. "Call Quietly" is toggled off by default, which is equivalent to "Countdown Sound" being toggled on.

Wait wait wait, what? They’re not fixing the abysmal 14 pro camera contrast and over processing issues? The major dealbreaker of notification sounds / focus modes not allowing sound through or enabling / disabling wrong? The fact that suddenly the wrong device far far awayyyyy activates with Siri on iphone + watch despite this happening smoothly with older models?

I keep checking for updates hoping to make my very expensive brick usable.

First of all: your experiences may not be the same of everyone else. Even if it does:

The plural of anecdote is not fact.

Your very expensive brick is quite usable. You simply have a few things that in your personal experience are not exactly the way you would prefer they be.

Second:
This article was originally focused on a “what’s new” - not necessarily a “what bugs have been fixed”.

There may be many more bugs being worked on than we’re mentioned in this article.

But what is a discussion thread if there is not massive hyperbole?

As an example - my HomeKit issues have been frustrating, but I’m not going to say things like “my home has been unusable”. And I’m *really* mad about HomeKit…

I hate when my watch and phone both respond to Siri even when I attempt to whisper to the one I’m speaking to or I’m clearly downstairs in the kitchen and my phone responds all the way upstairs. But I also hate when me raising my watch and speaking doesn’t activate Siri. I also hate when literally nobody is talking and Siri says something. I also hate how she gets really sarcastic at times. I also hate how sometimes she won’t respond at all or responds to words that aren’t hey siri. But I do respect how she only responds to my voice. All of this is probably happening because I set her voice to Irish and we all know how they can be.

My American Siri is just as sassy. Lol
Helpful tip though, with the watch, raise it and just say, “hey, [insert command]” it trips both the raise to speak, and “hey Siri” but phones hardly pick it up since it’s an incomplete trigger phrase.

That’s true with the hey part. Sometimes I just want to see who sets my timers first. Phone siri can only set one timer while watch siri can set multiple. She’s supposed to learn her master overtime but still hasn’t learned that I don’t want her to set timers. Then when I have her set a 4:00 alarm/timer, I have to hear first say, and I quote, “Timers can’t be set for time of day, so I set your timer alarm for 4:00.” But I think it’s because I use military time. I haven’t figured this part out yet. It comes off very c*nty when she does it. Ok I just figured it out lmao. I said Siri set a timer alarm for 5:00…. She responds… Done. 😂😂😂 And I just figured out you can also say clock alarm and use a specific time. This thread just saved my life.
