Apple is exploring both humanoid and non-humanoid robots as future smart home products, according to Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. However, he does not expect the robots to launch for several more years, if ever.

Kuo today said Apple's robot projects remain in the proof-of-concept stage within the company. In the event that Apple decides to move forward with launching the robots, Kuo believes that mass production likely won't begin until 2028 or later.

Kuo's prediction comes after a team of robotics researchers at Apple designed and prototyped a lamp-like robot with lifelike movements.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman last year reported that Apple was developing a tabletop robot with an "iPad-like display" attached to a "robotic limb." Barring any setbacks, he said Apple was aiming to announce the device as early as 2026 or 2027. As mentioned above, though, Kuo's current prediction for the robots is 2028 or later.

The tabletop robot would be primarily controlled with Siri and Apple Intelligence, according to Gurman. He said the device could respond to commands such as "look at me," which would position the screen on the user's face during a FaceTime video call. The device would also understand different voices, he said.

The tabletop robot could become a higher-end version of Apple's rumored smart home hub, which is expected to launch this year. Apple is aiming for a price of around $1,000, according to Gurman, but the plans could change.

"Siri, what is the weather outside?"

Siri: "Sorry, didn't quite catch that."

"Siri, WHAT IS THE WEATHER OUTSIDE?"

Siri: "Bum bum bum... bum bum bum... I'm having trouble connecting to the internet"
2 seconds later: "Your mother messaged you, 'there's cakes floating in the sky'"

 I thought you didn't have internet...

Opens mom's text: "This cake I just had at the local bakery was like floating in the clouds"

Seeing is believing. After 14+ years I’m a bit sceptical about Siri. I thought iOS 18 would bring a Siri that understands and was being able to answer follow up questions.

Then you were misinformed. No one who knew of Siri works and how LLMs work would have come to that conclusion.

Now they promise it for 18.4. I’m looking forward for the beta release to see this happens.

Have Apple really promised this?

I doubt that 18.4 will make big improvements to Siri.

I use the vision pro for hours daily. this sounds far less useful as described now
I use it too, as an extra-wide display for my laptop. But that's only because I program. For most people, it's not going to be useful.

Yes they did. They did it in their WWDC2024 keynote but when iOS 18 came out they didn’t deliver. Instead they chose the path of releasing updates with each .x release. Siri 2.0 is slated for iOS 18.4

The upcoming third generation of the Optimus robot has my attention. I'd like to see them used as assistive technology for those with disabilities.

Who in the clown world thinks disabled people have 50 grand to spend on a buggy crashing robot that spies on them, will definitely sell private data, and will definitely need an expensive subscription?

Apple cancelled their apple car 🚗 and apple glasses 🤓... i think in time they'll cancel their apple robot too.

Robot can mean anything mechanical that can be controlled or do a task. An iPhone app controlled juicer or blender is a robot. A HomePod that turns on a table is a robot.

The media is just populated with idiotic stock market manipulating bastards who exaggerate every trend based on dubious leaks.

Apple has the cash to research things that probably won't pan out, but would pay off big time if they do. Working in Apple R&D must be interesting.
The only problem is Timmy. When you consider Apple spends 27 billion on R&D (a fraction of what other similar sized technology companies do) and gets yearly 20 billion from Google, they only spend 7 billion on R&D.

If the FOJ is able to stop Google paying to Apple…. Guess where Timmy will cut spending first 🤑

Ever rumor about this makes it seem like it'll just never happen, and is instead a weird product people want to exist, rather than one Apple is actually working on.
But that’s the thing, people are not taking the rumors correctly.
This is obviously not describing a product, but a concept that exists inside of the labs of the company. No one knows what the actual shipping product will be, not even Apple.
Some of the first multi touch demos at Apple were done on a massive several hundred pound table that projected an image onto the ceiling, imagine if that would have been reported in 2003 as a coming product. “ Apple working on new 500 pound table that lets you manipulate images with multiple fingers, releasing in 2007”.
No one would have taken that seriously, because no one knew at the time that that would become the foundation for the iPhone and iPad.
Obviously the wild proofs of concept that we are hearing about aren’t going to ship in 2028.

In all seriousness, I think it would be an issue if Apple weren't looking into robotics. Apple should literally be looking into everything. And canceling a lot. Now whether "looking into it" goes beyond a researcher or two is a whole different story.

I actually suspect Apple would raise prices; bump up the price of each phone by $100 and that would more than cover the $20 billion (yes, I realize its slightly more complicated than that because fewer people would by the phones if they were more expensive, but it's in the ballpark).

Hopefully actually useful, unlike Roborock. That arm can only pick up a max is 300g, and then what is it going to do with what it picks up? Make a nice little junk mess in the corner?

We have three robovacs in our house of varying brands, and all they do consistently is dry hump table legs.
“and all they do consistently is dry hump table legs.“ maybe Apple trying to build on that idea.

We will see what is going to happen.
It’s 2025 and all I want to say is “hey Siri give me directions to my pharmacy that’s located in Palm Beach Gardens.” Siri is still incapable of doing that. Oh, but now we can make emojis and play around with making weird pictures….

I think just automatically turning to face you while you're in the kitchen is useful. I also think the Vision product line will be very popular in 5-10 years.
If we think about how long it took from when we started with the giant brick like cellular phones and Toby, we had a little Motorola or Nokia that we could actually slip into our pocket. I think we’ll find that going from the current Apple Vision Pro into something that’s More economic impractical, though just expensive, will be more like 2 to 3 years.

It's just laughable at this point.

A fraction of similarly sized tech companies?

Apple spent $31.4 Billion on R&D in 2024. Other than Amazon (with 1.5 million employees vs Apple's 160,000 employees), who are these similarly sized tech companies that spend multiple times what Apple does on R&D?

Fix Siri first, then focus on robots….

Who in their right mind would spend money on a cyborg with Siri-like comprehension skills.

I can see these robots killing your pets when you ask them for the weather.

No, the amount spent by Apple on R&D is $31.4 billion. And that is the amount SPENT, so where the money comes from--Google, phone sales, etc.--is irrelevant.
