what's changed exactly? the new safari is on Big Sur anyways, most underwhelming update ever
There are tons of MacRumors threads detailing all the differences. Some big benefits are directed at the M1 Macs. It's interesting to me that at least one of the changes requires at least 16 gb of RAM in order to work. In that case, that should be the base amount of RAM that Apple includes in their Macs from now on.

Kind of sad my 2014 retina 27 iMac won’t get this. Guess I’ll keep it going while it gets security updates and software support which should be a few more years. Don’t need the new hardware for anything, does all I need still so won’t be changing for a while.

Damn time flies and for the first time I’ve got a Mac that can’t be upgraded! 2014 iMac maybe it’s a sign!

Welcome to my world. I'm posting this from my mid-2011 13" MBA, still solid A.F. on Sierra. I tried High Sierra on it, but it hung or crashed without any warning, so thankfully TM got me back to where I was.

I'm just waiting for the early adopters to get their Macs and post reports before ordering the one I want, then jumping straight to Monterey.

BL.

I think that anyone who doesn’t go looking for the changes is going to have the exact same OS experience as in Big Sur. Maybe an extra icon in their dock for Shortcuts.

I’d be fine with it if they were doing any optimizations underneath the hood like in Snow Leopard, but I don’t recall reading about any. I’m only getting the update because it comes with the new MacBook I bought this week.

Been running the beta for a while, no issues. The single best feature is working Bluetooth for mice and headsets without lag or disconnects.

Anyone wanting to install the last version of Big Sur - do it now before Monday. It won’t be an option come Tuesday and the raw unfinished release of Monterey will be your only choice.
I for one skipped Big Sur. Am crossing my fingers that Monterey will improve upon it come it’s .4 release

have been running the beta since July when I got my M1 MBA, has been very stable for me.
I am going to hold off installing it on my iMac though
The previews have been stable for me on my M1 Mini. I haven't had any big issues with iOS 5 either (previous post) but people should do what is comfortable for them.

What are you talking about? macOS is not iOS. Apple does not prevent the installation of previous versions of macOS. I can still install Catalina today if I want. I fully except to continue to install Big Sur for at least a couple of years.

Yes. And it was worth the price back then when each iteration introduced major improvements.
Well… yes.
But Mac OS X was also in its infancy.
It’s amazing to go back and read the old ArsTechnica Mac OS X reviews, which are extremely long, extremely detailed, and started all the way back in 1999 and go all the way up until Big Sur.

Absolutely fascinating how long Apple actually supports their computers now though.
Absolutely no one purchasing an iMac in 2004 would have expected it to get updates in 2011, just for a parallel.
With the M Series I expect the support to go on even longer.
Wouldn’t be shocked if M1 series computers are still getting decent updates in 2030.

Wasn’t the 2015 MBP (that they list as supported) the same as the 2013 model, other than faster processors?
IIRC the 2015 has Broadwell processors where as the 2013 has Haswell, and the 2013 has the Nvidia GT 750M versus the 2015 which has the AMD M300 something or other.
And people are complaining about the names of the M1Pro and M1Max 🤣
literally any name is better than the endless Bridges, wells and lakes from Intel, and the endless letter, number, and symbol combinations from Nvidia and AMD.

Just for perspective, the 2014 5K iMac with Intel introduced in October 2014 cannot get Monterey.
The iPad Air 2, introduced on the exact same day, can get iOS 15.
Makes me very hopeful for Apple Silicon support.

Thanks for the thread. Can't wait to download and possibly brick my unsupported mac for the culture.

Eh, my good old MacBook Pro 2013 is out of update. Are they suggesting to buy the new one?
I’m also in that club with my late 2013 MacBook Pro. I was expecting at WWDC this year for them to announce the new update and get at least 1 more major version but I guess I am not disappointed as I have owned my MacBook Pro for 7.5 years now. It sounds like though with Big Sur it should get security updates until fall 2023? Kinda of curious on all that. Otherwise I have also been looking over those new MacBooks and really want one.
