some people's hobby is a good UI/UX design.
I'd like to point to the fact that these people didn't complain, but offered a solution (I'd argue a better solution) and this is exactly how society progresses.
in the other hand, IRONICALLY, there are people like you that ACTUALLY have nothing better to do on the internet, besides complaining.
now go think about what you have done

It sounds like quite a few people on the internet need a hobby... It's a battery icon....

People complain about the most nonsensical things sometimes. The design as it stands looks cleaner and is perfectly fine to me.

Based on the top voted comments, it looks like MacRumors users really would support anything Apple does and makes, no matter how egregious and anti-intuitive it is. If you don't agree with them and provide real solutions, you're cOmPlAiNinG, are a crybaby, and "there are people dying in the world".

I have a phone without a notch and it shows the percentage NEXT TO the battery bar. The notch does not contain anything useful. I never felt the need to film myself and Face ID can probably be tricked if someone is famous and Madame Tussaud's has a wax copy of them.
I love that there is choice. For you, not having Face ID works well. For me, Face ID has been a game changer. Yet others do not care either way. Great that there are choices that fit various people.

What? Stockholm syndrome? You obviously don’t know me. I am among first here to criticize bad decision that Apple makes.

On phones with notch there is no room.

Funny - on my iPhone 13 Pro Max (with notch), there is plenty of room to shift the cellular signal strength indicator over to the left next to the carrier name, and drop the numerical percentage in its place on the right:

Although confusing at first, I don't have issue with how it's displayed. My problem is, when it's over a light color wallpaper or other something at the top, it's difficult to read. The contrast is too low for my old eyes. Looks fine over dark colors.

Yes, people are dying fighting for their freedom, AND YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME AND ENERGY READING A STUPID APPLE RUMORS WEBSITE! WHY AREN'T YOU ON THE FRONT LINES FIGHTING RIGHT NOW?

It's possible to care about more than one thing - even things of widely differing levels of importance - at the same time.
I don't cry for new free features, probably you are doing. I'm also doing what I can to inform others, donating money. this is a non issue, people are just not used too and they become vocal as always, we are also talking about a beta. The attack on me can be applied to you as well, the difference is I'm saying don't waste time on such futile questions right now. And yes I can have time for 20 mins of web while I have 2 work and doing street activism too.

No, that isn't great. Apple was right to remove it and not give you the option to see it. This is a change for the worse.
I hope you find a place where you can live your life such that it is perfect for you. I will not be in that same place, but will be in a place where there are choices and where I can learn from others with different opinions such that I grow and prosper. I hope you grow and prosper in your own little space.

Funny. On my iPhone 12 Pro Max, the cellular name on the left of the notch is scrolling to show the complete name. "T-Mobile NL" doesn't fit, so it just scrolls the text the whole time.

Wish we would get them both already. I like touch to pay and to get new apps and even to unlock as I take it out of my pocket, but any authentication when you are already looking is definitely better with Face.

Yeah that's not how the real world works. In the real world, people have to decide what's best for other people, because you're not the one writing the software or studying the impacts of one thing vs. another.

In the real world I am a product manager in a highly successful company, continuously pushing people to do things better. Saying things like "Go back to the way it was. Nobody needs the battery indicator visible all the time." is not helpful in creating value for users and customers.

I think the main issue is this attitude:

What I prefer = "Good design"
What I don't prefer = "Bad design"

Otherwise, who cares?

No, you're not. In the real world, I am a product manager and lead developer in a large software product and every day have to make decisions like this. The answer is not infinite lists of options.

I hope you listen to your users better. Obviously, the answer is not to have infinite lists of options. Nobody is asking for that. And I, as a product manager, would never allow infinite lists of options. But the answer is also not "Nobody needs" while people are asking for something. As a product manager you know you have to listen to the question behind the request and work with that. You need to make it work for your market. "Nobody needs" as an answer to a request is never the right answer.

This. They've shown on the iPad that they can do TouchID on the "power" button on the side - add that to the next iPhone. Keep FaceID. Let people choose in Settings whether unlock requires one or the other, or either, or both. Sometimes one is more convenient, sometimes the other is more convenient.

And who makes that arbitrary judgement and decision? Was there some sort of study or consultation of a user and customer task force?

Product teams decide on these things based on various inputs. In some cases a study or a user consultation can be used. Sometimes the product team will decide to do something that may be controversial for some. Whatever the basis, product teams will have some form of a (hopefully good) explanation.

Am I the only one who think it’s weird that battery icons still look like AA batteries? It’s 2022… Maybe it’s time to modernize the look!

Ah, but they don't look like AA batteries - more like an 18650 (or 21700) Li-ion battery, which, per Wikipedia, "is used in many laptop computer batteries, cordless power tools, certain electric cars, electric kick scooters, most e-bikes, portable powerbanks, electronic cigarettes, and LED flashlights." (Oh, and the 21700 is used in the Tesla Model 3 amongst many other places.) Thoroughly modern ;)
