I only read half the previous posts in this thread, but I caught the general mood. As a video professional, I must say...

WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE???

Thunderbolt is exactly what I've been wanting. It's a tiny port that goes a long way toward eliminating obsolescence. I'll be able to edit HD video at full performance anywhere on a laptop with a RAID array without dragging a Mac Pro around. It has the potential to hook almost anything to anything.

Yet, you people say it's "too fast", asking what's the need? Seriously??? I suppose when half the posters say that USB2 was better than Firewire, they're probably not gonna get it no matter what they hear. If I see another post on any forum or blog saying Thunderbolt is pointless, I just may scream.

As a biotech professional a backwards compatible USB3 device would be more valuable and cost effective than TB.
How many FireWire thumb drives, keyboard, printers, mice, do you see on the shelves?
The point I am hearing is, the versatility of USB has a use today.
I am willing to bet there are more people using USB portable drives, that can exploit the benefits of USB3 than editing hd video as their profession.

"Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) warned of lower-than-expected results in its current quarter and again reduced its 2011 outlook as the tech company struggles with soft computer sales and faces further investment in its services business."

Exhibit A for what happens when you produce boring, cheap tech.

Yes, anytime I buy a product, my #1 concern isn't performance, specifications, usefulness, or value - I'm really concerned about what the manufacture's profit margin is...

Pfffffttttttttttt

There is no optic transceiver in mini DisplayPort. Nor it is optimal for for DIY connectors. Which it will need to have available if it's gonna make it as ethernet replacement.

It's been known from the beginning that the optic transceiver for Thunderbolt will be in the cable, not the port.

I got a HP laptop about 2 years ago and its brilliants, the specs were much better than the top Mac Books for about half the price. I used to jam my laptop in a ruck sack full of books and sports gear and it never had any problems. While my friends who have had MacBooks have always had them break after just sitting on a desk. Failed logic boards and disk drives where the main faults.

At work I use an old HP file server for my programming and again its brilliant.

For those people saying HP isnt important...
They are. They still make and sell more computers than Apple...

Wait what?

Everybody is convinced in USB 3.0? Who? Sounds like a pointless ripoff to me. Hopefully thunderbolt takes off and kills usb 3.0

USB 3.0 is a ripoff of what exactly?

2 things

But this is MacRumors!!!! What's really important is that the Macbooks are elegant and just Beautiful (and they have "the sex") ... Your crappy HP's are UGLY, and clunky, and junky, and sooo THICK!!! And (really important) do you know much Apple profits off of everyone they sell!!!!! How cool is that???

USB 2 ofc.

Um...I don't think anyone here is stating it is too fast. I think the main points in this thread are:

1)TB is extremely fast compared to consumer stuff before (USB 2.0 and FW)
2)But is TB going to be adopted/put on every low end-mid grade computer (not just Mac) like USB? Doubt it. Especially with Apple promoting it (gotta love all the proprietary iOS chargers/cords as well as the display cables, etc)
3)USB 3.0, for 90% of consumers, is just as fast as TB for what consumers will be using it for (printers, cameras, syncing iPod, backing up 100GB data, etc).
4)USB 3.0 is evolutionary...not revolutionary.
Last I checked there are no USB 3.0 ports on any Macs. Nothing to see here folks, move along :)

My MacBook Pro has never had any problem whatsoever. So I will extrapolate from that anecdotal evidence to state confidently that no Apple product in history has ever had any failures.

Oh wait, my anecdotal evidence doesn't prove a thing any more than yours does.

Poor deluded folks who cannot see the post-PC era that is upon us.

HP is in no position. It might be better if they keep quiet and focus on stagnating PeeCee sales. Keep flooding the market with more junk and hope enough of it moves to make a buck.

And what about that whole WebOS project? Somehow THAT doesn't sound too convincing . . .

HP cuts outlook again citing Windows PC slump, services weakness

Bloomberg last night published portions of a May 4th memo from HP CEO Leo Apotheker to top execs in which he warned that the company was facing “another tough quarter” and urged all groups to “watch every penny and minimize all hiring.”

As a result, HP reported second quarter 2011 results a day early.

“Hewlett-Packard Co. warned of lower-than-expected results in its current quarter and again reduced its 2011 outlook as the tech company struggles with soft computer sales and faces further investment in its services business,” Ian Sherr reports for Dow Jones Newswires. “Tuesday, H-P blamed its lowered outlook on falling consumer PC sales, ‘near-term impact’ from the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in March, and lower operating profits in its services unit… It called its consumer performance ‘uneven,’ with continued softness in consumer PCs.”

Sherr reports, “Shares slipped 4.8% to $37.90 premarket as HP now sees full-year earnings before items of at least $5 a share on revenue between $129 billion and $130 billion, compared with February estimates for earnings of $5.20 to $5.28 a share and $130 billion to $131.5 billion in revenue.”

The Mac has outgrown the Windows PC market for 20 consecutive quarters.

You quoted my entire post...I don't get your comment/reply. The entire world knows that not a single Mac has USB 3.0 ports. Macs, however, have had USB 2.0 ports for like 5+ years now.

Maybe you were talking about point #2 in my post...which I said USB...I didn't say a specific version of USB...and I was stating how USB is already in every computer.

Seriously dude, you misuse exclamation points in a way that makes you look 7-years-old. You can make your sarcasm much more believable if you do it quietly. When you shout like this, you lose much of the clever factor.

As a biotech professional...

Not to pick on you...but why do people feel a need to substantiate their opinion (which by itself is always going to be subjective and bias) with a reference to professional life?

Perhaps Im conveying my own ignorance of what Biotech Engineers do everyday...but I dont think you fine folks at Umbrella represent the majority of electronic consumers;)

Is this the stat where they sell the most computers? From the experience of my friends Apple products seem to break the most. I remember they always used to complain about the ipods being terrible.

I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR SENTIMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I COMPLETELY AGREE THAT TOO MANY APPLE FANS PLACE HIGHER PRIORITY ON DESIGN RATHER THAN FUNCTION!!!!!!!!!!!! I DONT KNOW WHY IM SO ANGRY RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My bad I used your post as a starter and not to bash your comment. I was just stating the fact about "no USB 3 in Macs, so why the uproar on this topic" :)

Its back...

Im just happy that were all back at bashing each others computer references ;)
Sick of the iToys vs JUNK wars :p
LOL!

I have USB 3 at home. It's a little more exciting than USB 2.

The upside is that the USB ports on my machine let me charge my iPod touch even when the computer is off. :)

hey no prob! :) Just didn't know what you were trying to say.

I have a feeling it's gonna be 2013 at the earliest before USB 3.0 shows up in Macs priced under $1999.

The PC vendors world still hasn't adopted USB 3.0 in huge quantity yet...I think you still need to buy a $800 desktop to get USB 3.0 but maybe I'm wrong (last time I checked was March). I would hope that all PCs will be USB 3.0 by Jan 2012 which is likely when I'll get a new box.
