The only thing I miss is being able to attach files in an easy manner but I could care less about widescreen display, typing, etc. in any application on my iPhone.

Does a Pearl sync with iTunes? Have Safari? Hundreds of useful apps?

Thought not. So the Pearl has weaknesses as does the iPhone. If you're that much of an e-mail geek, keep the darn Pearl.

lol. itunes for windows is the worst program ever. its completely featureless compared to others like songbird/mediamonkey. in fact i'd say itunes is iphones weakest link and its one of the main reasons i'm probably switching away from my iphone 3g.

safari crashes all of the time. also useless.

definitely an inflammatory subject, but what the hell, might as well...

waiting for transit this evening, trying to reply emails and i realized how much harder it was versus trying to do the same task on a pearl...

obviously the aspects that have been done to death don't need more commentary (lack of search, lack of cut and paste) but the fact that some of my emails just weren't sending was just too much and unacceptable...

yes, after reading the last line many of you will take me for an uniformed moron who doesn't understand what makes email work on a device and what doesn't...fair enough...but i'm telling you i understand and my berry before this had none of the issues that i experience at least once a week with the iphone and that really should be all i have to say...

i'm as much of a apple fanboy as anyone but i see when something is inferior and for email handling, the iphone is far inferior and i beg anyone to contest that...weak

have a wonderful evening all, and enjoy the apps as they do rule.

You're kidding, right? I always tell people that BB's are for corporate email. If you are on that garbage BIS, you can't even sync your email two ways (unless you have Yahoo), nor see your IMAP folders. That's because BIS doesn't do true IMAP. All it does is push incoming email to your phone.

Read this online petition if you don't understand what I'm saying.

http://www.petitiononline.com/BBtwoway/

Furthermore, if you don't have an email account with one of their partnered providers, you have to wait 15 minutes for your mail to arrive. There's no manual checking of email. Want to use MS Exchange with your BB? That's another $15 for BES.

Lol, you should've done your homework before coming here.

Could Mail.app be improved upon? Certainly- what in life couldn't be improved upon. But I would hardly call email on the iPhone "weak." I have my phone synced to my MobileMe account for personal email and Exchange for work. And it works flawlessly for both. I really have no complaints, if I want to type emails in landscape, I use TouchType. If I want to email attachments, I use OneDisk or MobileDisk.

I really can't help but wonder if all those people who bark about the iPhone as a business email device have ever actually used it for business email. I do every day, and it performs seamlessly. In fact, my company has far more iPhones deployed these days than BB's, and I sure don't hear anyone complaining. Email on the BB is anything but seamless.

2) Not being able to attach files is kind of a bummer, though, you have to have the files on the phone to begin with, right? So can't you just email yourself with the attachment and then forward the email? (Not sure if iPhone strips attachments on forwards or not as I have never tried it.)

I email self documents to myself all the time and then send them from my iPhone to other clients/people. I did this with my resume' and the letters of rec. along with numerous other files and it worked just fine.

the absolute biggest flaw of the email client is the lack of a unified inbox. This should have been addressed months ago.

Definitely. All they need to add is a folder called 'inbox' at the top to pool all email account folders on the iPhone.

However, the OP has no clue what he's talking about in regards to email. It's actually the BB w/BIS that's the big letdown.

Email does suck on the iPhone.

1. font is too small, can't be reformatted with larger font
2. can't read emails in widescreen
3. can't respond or compose emails in widescreen
4. can't attach files or photos to emails (sure you can email a photo from the camera application, but it's only one photo at a time)
5. when are we getting PUSH email again??

feel free to add to the list or modify it.

yea the mail program could be much better
but need i remind you that you cant do ANYTHING in widescreen on a pearl, which is what the iPhone is being compared to on this screen?

and we do have push. Its called MobileME
I know, it costs money, but its totally worth it. dont be frugal.

I agree about the widescreen, but that's it. On the whole, I greatly prefer email on my iphone to email on my bb 8700.

  • I've never once found the default font hard to read on the iphone (the default on my bb was awful, btw), but regardless, you can change the minimum size in about 2 seconds.
  • The formatting on the bb is a joke compared to the html on the iphone.
  • As with everything about the bb OS, it takes about 2 steps (clicks) more to get where you want to go than it should.
  • Why must the bb separate email by days? I don't care, and those date headings just take up already-limited screen space.

Nothing is perfect, but I'll take the iphone's limitations over the bb's any day.

If the web site for MobileMe VASTLY improves, then I would consider it worth it.

It is the ONE thing keeping me from using MobileMe.

My biggest gripe is not being able to search the inbox! WTF? I have to log into the Google app to search my inbox, when it should be indexed on the iphone.

This is an honest question, not a "your idea is stupid" comment, but how do most phones deal with this?

In order to index and search your mail, wouldn't every message have to be on your phone? Or does it use a database created on your computer, then download a message when needed? My Gmail IMAP folder on my computer is currently at 3.91GB. I wouldn't want all that on my phone. Of course, that is every message (minus spam) I have received in the last 4 years.

So how do most phones deal with searching email?

The only thing I don't understand about this thread is why the exact same thing couldn't have been said without "Okay, everyone here is a fanboy, so they're all going to be posting ******* responses." You just get more of them when you're being inflammatory. That is called trolling, whether you meant it that way or not. It wouldn't have been trolling if you have presented the exact same point without the fanboy comments and such, as you have a legitimate issue/complaint. Just saying.

Email is not the greatest on the iPhone. It could use a nice landscape mode for viewing at least. Zooming means you have to scroll horizontally which is uncomfortable and foreign to many. However, everything can be improved. I don't know what fanboys the OP is referring to.

I do miss being able to type an email in widescreen and I would like to be able to attach more than one picture at a time. However, I don't blame the iPhone for not having push email with some providers. I do blame Google for not allowing it for anything but Android though.

I can say that I love seeing email in it's originally intended formatting. That is fantastic.

All I have to say is that some people will call you a "uniformed moron"? Damn that's a great idea! Can we just put all morons in uniforms? It'd make picking them out easier... I'm definitely not calling you one since all your points are valid, but the idea of morons in uniforms cracks me up...

Sad to change over

I'll admit I had to dump my 3G after 4+ months of use. I loved the phone and it worked great with one exception. I need to receive my email and NOT the next morning only after re-starting my phone.
I switched to the Bold and I'm happy now. It's amazing, I have the same carrier with the same email accounts yet the iPhone failed to deliver email.
I hope someday the email delima is resolved so that I may return to the iPhone. It's a great phone, just not email reliable.

Blackberrys store emails on the phone and search is accessed through hitting Menu > Search while in the email app.

So EVERY email is stored on the device, or just the most recent stuff/stuff in the inbox? I don't think I'd want my entire email box on the phone, that's a lot of space. But I can certainly see the need to search email. I'll just use the web page when I need that.

If you never delete any, then yep, every single one. It's extremely easy to delete chunks of emails though - select the first one, hit shift, scroll to the last one you want to delete, and hit backspace on the keyboard. Like using a PC. There's also Menu > Delete prior, which deletes all emails prior to the one selected in the list.
Keep in mind... emails are very small, just text. If there are photos embedded, you can choose not to save the photos on the phone.

I wish

I was hoping it would too. It did not have any effect on the email. I still have the phone active and setting next to my BB it has been interesting to see how they differ in receiving email.

2.2 did however fix my dropped call issues. That was a nice suprise. The battery seems to improve also with each new update.

My iPhone fetches Mail just fine. What the heck are you doing?

A) You have it set up wrong.

B) Your phone is broke. (Meaning, the software on it, not physically.)

Those are the only two options here.

Sorry to be blunt, but it's the truth. My fetch with GMail fetches as it should. Of course, I like to conserve battery, so I just use manual.
