I have the iPhone at all time close to me ... I could live without it or few seconds, but not longer. But seriously: it is good to have such a capable tool around me(could be an android, too). During the earthquake in March here in Japan it was really helpful to have a smartphone which worked compared to regale voice transmission was down and keep connection to my family and coworkers.

I'm fine without an iPhone, but it is hard to get by without a smartphone. I'm currently going 3 weeks with just an old verizon flip phone, and I miss having an always on data connection. But I'm still alive so yes I can live without it.

I agree, after using a smartphone and having a device with so many tools that's constantly connected is the part that makes it very difficult to go back to a dumbphone. The iPhone is amazing and the apps make it incredible but more or less it's just that connectivity and being able to stay on top of everything all the time that I really need.

I like my iPod touch 4 because as Steve Jobs says, it's "also an iPhone (4) without a contract". :)

I generally think the internet is the greatest invention of the last 100 years. More than half our apps probably needs an internet connection. We can do so much and even text and make calls using Wi-Fi.

If the internet is our information superhighway, I look at our smartphones, tablets, and many other gadgets as these "vehicles" to take us to those "places." It always comes down to preferences and price with these gadgets. Just like you don't see everyone driving the same exact cars like you because of their preferences or the price. The iDevices would feel like living in a gated community once you are finished driving through that highway. By 2015, more than 3 billion people will be using the internet which is more than 40% of the world population by that point. Many of us are basically live in the cloud now.

The idea of living without a smartphone or any internet is much harder for me than simply living without an iPhone. Living without an iPhone is like having my best vehicle break down. But I could have other options in my garage to take me back to that information superhighway. But living without a gadget which doesn't have any internet connection is like never owning a car in Los Angeles and you have to use the bus, ride a bike, or walk to go places.

Agreed. I think I could live without my prized Apple products, and I would still feel comfortable if I could access the internet. It wouldn't be the best setup, but it would be okay. Not having the internet is like not having shelter. Not really, but you get the point.

I could squeak by with an iPod Touch instead of my iPhone 4. I'd hate to have to use one of those "other OS" but I'm sure I could "make do" with webOS, Android or even Blackberry. It really comes down to cost versus function. If At&t suddenly raised their rates and I had to bail to another platform or carrier, I'm sure I could "get by" but right now I'm happy with my iPhone 4 and I'm not even mildly tempted by any alternatives.

Over the years I've owned Palm and Blackberry phones. None of them has gotten me through an entire year as delighted as I am with my iPhone 4. I think my honeymoon with BB OS was over when I found out how little memory the 8830 had and it was really over the second time I had to clean my trackball. Of course the sad BB browser and text email view on OS 4.2.2.196 was enough to make you wonder what RIM was thinking but at least it worked after a fashion.

I think my honeymoon with Palm was over when I stopped using it as a "PDA with a phone" and I actually tried to use Blazer as a browser and Versamail for email. Yuck.

So my honeymoon with iPhone 4 isn't over after over 11 months of use and the only replacement I would consider is a next generation iPhone. Well come to think of it my 16 GB internal memory is kinda full so I am looking forward to iOS 5's ability to upload pictures and hopefully clear out memory of older photos.

@nateo200: Do you have it set up so if somebody finds you passed out they can pick up your iPhone and "shake to defibrillate?" :D

Ever since I got my iPad, I have used my iPhone for bigger apps less & less. I now use my iPhone as my phone, music player, texting, camera, and social media check-in device. I have a few games still on there & a couple other things, but really, there is nothing I do on my iPhone that I couldn't do on any other smartphone.

I am not a true fanboy of any brand including Apple. But last night, I really did appreciate my iPhone 4 more after my Pixi Plus was acting up where it restarted by itself twice or it wouldn't turn on and I needed to take off the battery. It can't even play my songs smoothly if I am browsing the web. Poor little phone is just too underpowered and when I tried to overclock it to 806MHz, it gave me random resets.

But I have had very little problems with iPhone 4. Most stable smartphone I have ever owned. iOS isn't perfect like any OS out there and still needs some improving, but my iPhone has rarely acted up on me. Maybe a few times where Safari crashed because of RAM and a couple times where it resetted by itself. But rarely. Happens maybe every two months. Nothing is perfect. Other phones might give me problems every day or a few times per week.

I absolutely adore iPhone 4's stability more than anything else. But it is great we live in a world with options now. Even our televisions have internet now. But as long as it "just works", that is good enough for me. It is why I compare these gadgets to "vehicles." I would rather have a very stable and durable car to take me places than anything that is fancy or has more horsepower but gives me more problems. Imagine a phone just dying on you when you're stuck in the middle of the road? I even have a spare dumb phone with strong reception in my car just in case. Reliability and good battery life can go a long way in the longer run.

I just spent a month overseas and knowing that I would have to pay $20 per MB, I struggled to avoid using data when I wasn't in range of wifi. That was tough enough.

Obviously every single one of us could live without their iPhone. However, my iPhone 4 greatly improves my life. I have a 45 minute commute on public transit that would be extremely unenjoyable if I had nothing to do. However between texting, watching tv, checking email, reading news, listening to music and podcasts, playing fantastic games and even making the odd phone call, I don't even notice the commute. All that and I don't even have to think about battery life?

Score.

I've realised that the first thing I do when I wake up is lie in my bed and check stuff with my iPhone. In fact, it's the last thing I do before I go to sleep!

I'm definitely a huge iPhone addict, but I like to think that I don't let it get in the way of my life. For example, I keep my use of it to a minimum at the dinner table. :)

For that I mostly use my iPad; no iPhone needed  beside the odd phone call

I just gave my iPhone 4 to my friend because the iPhone 5 will be out soon and I have a Palm Pixi Plus as a backup.

I thought going from an iPhone 4 to a Pixi would be pretty damn tough:
- smaller screen
- slower
- non-retina
- no real apps
- no turn-by-turn navigation (only google maps directions)...

... but I gotta say I adapt rather quickly. To the point where I could actually see myself being totally content staying with the Pixi

Of course I probably won't once the iPhone 5 comes out, but I could totally see myself surviving without an iPhone in the future. Just not a smartphone...

Nope, I love having a computer in my pocket at all times.

It's almost more important to me than my desktop/laptop.

I can completely see why the world is embracing smart phones so well. They are amazing!!!!

iphone 4s aren't serving as reserve power when a pacemaker fails so i think everybody would be able to live without an iphone 4. or would everyone who has one now be dead without any apple phone product 15 years ago. (or are you guys not that old yet on this board?)

Hmmmm

Sometimes I feel I can't live without it but I sure can even though life will be a bit miserable away from it.:(
