I think someone needs to have a talk with Jordan Golson for posting this on the front page without doing some research first. It appear that this app was mostly harmless but I still did a restore of my settings to be sure. What if actual malware had made it through the review process and Macrumors promoted it on the front page like this.

I think macrumors owes its readers an apology. You were trying to get "hits" without considering whether the app was safe.

If it wasnt safe then it shouldnt have made it into the app store.

I hate newsstand!!!

I use the junk folder too... to get rid of the unwanted stuffs...

But apparently, NewsStand cannot be put into a folder... it has its "rights" to be all by itself...

Nope, that's normal behavior. Just a security measure from Apple, if someone got a hold of you idevice and used it to download something.

but it never did that before
i download all the apps on my iphone and never experienced that.

Happens to me all the time I get an iOS update...Apple then consideres your device as "new" and hence sends out the email, just to make sure nobody is using your account and password on a different device to download something.

Apple really should expand their API's.

Try wearing a tinfoil hat. Should help with the malware.

aww...

dang nabit ...

See, this what what Apple when a company like Apples tries to vet their stuff and control the system...... as jailbreaking has already shown the way.

Your doing a good job... don' let anyone tell you otherwise.

It does. I just did it.

If it doesn't get posted here, it gets posted elsewhere. At the end of the day apple still finds out, just maybe not as soon.

It does work. I did it on my phone and my iPad earlier. Youre probably not doing it right.

Yea maybe for you, but like I said if I keep newsstand on page 2 and tap the home button then hold down newsstand it moves to first page (which is irrelevant bc it doesn't go into the folder) but when I put newsstand on page 3 and do it the icon doesn't move to the first page.

Point im making is that newsstand will go to the home page from page 2 but not 3

It never actually went to a page for me. The icon disappeared and dropped into the folder. Anyway, confused at what you are saying. At first it seemed like you were stating it can't be out into a folder. Now I'm not at all sure what your point is.

No!! please developer put it back in the AppStore again so i can download !
Hows he supposed to do that with a suspended dev account (you know Apple pulled it, right?)
It's amazing how many people scream malware over this app, while having no clue...so many people here have no clue *facepalm*
I'm not saying it is malware. But it works by using a glitch, and it could of been used to do other stuff.

Anyway, I personally think the main reason it was shut down so fast was the iAds blocking.
from what I've heard, many of the jailbreaking apps/tweaks that alter iOS (basically, the useful ones) are less than legal

jailbreaking an ipad remains illegal (i don't believe it was ever legal).
The only tweaks that would be illegal or againts any contracts you are in would be ones like Installous (which is gone, now) or apps that bypass jailbreak checks on apps.

iPads are technically not allowed, but that's because the exemption that allows jail-breaking smartphones goes by device category, not OS, and there is no legally defined category for things like iPads.
Why is this being blocked?

Is no good reason to block an app like this

Even though it violates the rules for App store apps and blocks iAds?

If you had read about the app, you'd realize the question about possibly having some kind of malware in it isn't a response to Apple pulling it, but rather the fact that it used an exploit to work at all.

And what does that tell you about Apple's closely held APIs - more lockdown, more control. They don't provide an API for hiding icons? USERS MUST OBEY! USERS MUST SEE APPLE APP ICONS! OBEY! OBEY!

The idea that if you don't use the official API's it's an "exploit" is a joke. Love how Apple has true believers singing their tune, speaking their language. In the normal world that's done every day without anyone batting an eyelid.

Yep! I have been using computers since 1982 and actually started out on APPLE but the whole BLIND SHEEP occult thing that APPLE has going for them just completely eludes me to the point that I just don't get the brain washing power that they posses over their user base where they can say and do anything and it is perfectly acceptable.

I just don't get it!

Please don't start preaching the whole MAC vs Windows spiel to me either, as I just know that all of the MAC Fan boys that will all try to gang rape me for what I just said as it is a moot point because pretty much..... I was using APPLE before most of you were even born and I don't sit on either side of the fence Windows/MAC so don't even go there with me please.

I use PC because I work on PC's only due to the fact that most of the world computer users are PC based..........end of story!

I loved Steve Jobs but I swear that man could sell a $500.00 Computer for $3000.00 and insist that you needed a Fist Full of Sand shoved up your a$$ to accentuate the whole APPLE Experience and people would line up for it......LOL.........Silly MAC People!:D

But, the same thing applies with Android too. People swear that GOOGLE is their friend because they are all about open source...LOL.. Yet another WOLF Dressed in sheep's clothing who has everyone brainwashed!

Why do you say this? It's exactly the kind if attitude some people take after learning that someone has been tricked into installing malware. If you install this you have no clue *facepalm* If you think this app is malware you have no clue *facepalm*

I can't see how this kind of app is anything but the perfect iOS attack vector: design an app that breaks the iOS rules. Submit it repeatedly until you fluke a sloppy reviewer. Promote the hell out of its exciting subversiveness and tell everyone to be quick - Apple are going to ban it, not because it's so nasty, but because its so gooood. Evidently people will lap it up and concoct their own rationale for why extremely dubious activity is all normal and part of the show. It's social engineering at its finest.

You are not getting my point: I was complaining about all those people who downloaded it, didn't read the manual and then screamed "malware" when something (by design of the app) happens, that they were unaware off (because they didn't read the manual).

Alas Apple was quick: I actually can't use the App anymore! I can only get into the tips section and that's it.

hide features are not active any longer, just 2 tips about screen shot and save battery.

Okay, fair enough, I did miss your point.

On the other hand, if the manual says what I presume it says, something along the lines of please ignore all the suspicious behaviour and accept any the prompts that pop up* I would scream "malware" right away ;)

Anyway I can afford to be smug about all this. I've solved the newsstand app problem without hacks or jailbreaking. It's a very obscure solution but it works for me and means I don't have magazines cluttering up the house.

*I'm not saying it says exactly that, just exaggerating to make the point

Yeah well, count me among the group who likes the fact that 'normal' end users can't phuk up the core functionality of the device. It protects people from themselves.

Apple's philosophy is to make products with features that the non tech savvy crowd can actually use. If they are allowed to delete the basic apps, it becomes a nightmare.

You people gotta quit thinking that YOU and YOUR ability are the only demographic that are using these products. They need to be usable by the masses.

Wanna dick up ur idevice? Go ahead and jailbreak to your heart's content.

I take comfort in knowing that my father, who inherited my ip4, can't jack it up by deleting everything by mistake, then calling me asking how to fix it.

I would however, like the idea of having on/off sliders in settings for app visibility. That would still keep neophytes from deleting core functionality while allowing customization.

If you take a moment to understand Apple's design philosophy, you might get off the 'must obey' bs. Sometimes, a bit of control is a good thing.

This is just getting worse and worse

Apple doesn't just bans some applications and technologies (Java, Flash, Adult Online Magazines, ...) but now also forces us to use (or at least clutter our screens with) its own stock applications. If you don't allow something to be hidden, at least give us the ability to change default applications, i.e. maps.

I didn't know they block your dev account
