Yes I routinely use the metric system. Did you notice I said 12.5mm = 0.5". Kind of answers your question, doesn't it?

And I routinely work in numbers like 0.01mm (and smaller).

I know how large a mm. I have a drawer full of metrology equipment for measuring down to 0.002 mm accuracy.

I get it. You like large watches.

I don't.

No offense.

But the difference between 12.5 and 10.5 is HUGE! 12.5 is 19% larger than 10.5.

And don't tell me you can't visible see the difference, because I know you can. And you can definitely feel it.

But the apple watch isn't just too dang thick, but the bezel size is huge. Even the "smaller" 1.5" screen has too large a bezel.

No, I don't like thick watches.
I like watches of all kinds.

Rolex submariner is same thickness and it is one of the most popular sport watches.

Only dress watches are thinner than 10mm.

I had one of those when I was younger (it is still around somewhere). Got it from my grandfather when he died.

Then the nickel plating wore off.

I think it was actually a BOLEX... :D

My grandfather was a quite the character.

You will not find too many modern mechanical sport watches thinner than 10mm.
Maybe battery watches or dress watches but Apple watch should be compared to other sport watches, not dress watches or throw away quartz watches.

Yeah I totally agree.

These people talking about cuff links make me laugh.
Do they understand we are talking about a $350 watch? LMFAO.

People who wear cuff links generally wear nice watches for dressy attire, not a $350 sport watch.

I will say, I am tempted to get an Apple watch, but that's because I've always loved experimenting with technology. A $350-$500 watch isn't a massive investment (I'm middle aged, have a decent job, fairly modest house and car, no wife or kids) so I can get away with it, even if it's probably not going to be a "regular wear" as us watch people say. But bemoaning the object's thickness, when it's really just about the same as many other automatic mechanical watches, seems to be a silly thing to latch onto...

High-End 18-Karat Gold Apple Watch Could Cost Up to $1,200

Yes. I might also get it.
I'm hoping the gold one will be pretty cheap, hopefully cheap enough to justify the fact that it will be completely useless in two-three years.

But it really seems that not that many will get it.
Many on this forum, who are usually the most ardent pro apple buyers seem uninterested for the most part.
Most watch forum users are not interested.
Many people say, I will buy it next year or something like that.

I'll be getting a steel one. Need it as a developer. And I'll probably wear it - i tried the pebble and like it for awhile until it bricked itself. Solves multiple problems for me. I'll get one for my wife, too. So that's two sales.

Yeah, but a Rolex will hold its value over time. A smart watch? Not so much...

I suspect at some point down the line the first year Edition gold apple watches will be collectors' items and will likely go up in value.

Depends on how many are sold.
The battery and electronic components may also stop working by the time it is really valuable.

Exactly. You can't even see "haute horlogerie" from $1200 - or $12,000 for that matter.

Patek Phillippe and their $120K perpetual calendar chronograph laughs at the thought.

Yes and this is the reason why the notion that Apple was going to be a threat to the entire Swiss watch industry was always a flawed joke of an idea.

Apple will sell a bunch but at this time it's not going to be a threat to the Swiss.

As a watch collector, the Apple Watch is not really aimed at me. It has a ton going for it, but the watch community dismisses smart watches in general. They are not the target market though.

Yes, but in the long run Apple will have bred a generation of kids who won't even consider a Rolex, Patek, etc. by the time they grow up and can afford them because they're used to a smartwatch, unlike our generation (and the previous several generations). This is where the real threat lies.

what i don't understand is that those photos were taken using iPhones...yet the photos themselves were of appalling quality

the photos i take with the iPhone are stellar...so i wonder what is up with the photos then

Yet more proof that contrary to many people's beliefs, you can't buy the ability to take good pictures. Photography is still an act that requires talent to do well, like drawing and dancing.

I don't think so.
The kids who can afford Pateks in the future will grow up in an environment, where they encounter Pateks and so on.

Watches may cease to be status symbols one day but I seriously doubt it.

That's the most important question! For those who buy the high-end Edition version, what will they do, how will they feel when the next iteration is released?

Will Apple have a regular, annual, release schedule with the Watch, or will they go a couple of years or more between hardware releases?

First edition buyers should beware of these things and expect that it could get outdated quickly.

The target market for these will just buy a new one. If you care about the price, don't buy it :)

Yes, so $100K Pateks won't be affected, but what about next generation common middle-class men who'd otherwise save up enough for a Rolex. They may not even consider it as they're used to a smartwatch.

Gold is money, fiat is currency.

I challenge you to walk into WalMart with a krugerand and go shopping. Let us know how that works out for you.

Words have meanings. You can assert that Gold is "money" all you want, but it can't buy you groceries.
