It had a brownish, champagne color to it. Not as much as the new one, but definitely more champagne than the current silver of the iPhone 5.

Nope, it was silver. Perhaps a slightly different material making you think the color was different, but it is silver for certain.

I bet this champagne iPhone is testing grounds for future macs... This is 2014 people, were talking cylindrical Mac Pros and champagne iMacs.

Champagne's not the chintzy rapper bling gold I thought we were getting.

It now looks like a white/silver model that's strangely discoloured.

The Galaxy S4 comes in "Black Mist" and "White Frost". How soon before they add "Golden Haze" to the lineup?

This version of the gold iPhone rumor looks nice. Not tacky and gaudy like a golden wedding band.

this is the tackiest thing Apple has ever done. "Champagne" finish went out with the Volvo 240DL.
I hate to say it, because I always hate when other forum members go there. But seriously, NEVER would have happened under jobs.
Let me break it down.
Apple's touchstone for design has long been European minimalist. Specifically Swiss and Scandinavian designers.
The gold finish is more typical of stereo components.
This is just plain Gaudy.

And yet...

Gold

Yeah, so it's more of a warm gray or French gray. Not so bad after all.

Now I just wonder what color the glass inserts will be.

Edit: Oh I see the shot with the white panels... Hmmmm...

Hmmm this pic makes it look really appealing really. A change from Black or White might be a nice change too. Seriously considering this one.

I much prefer the cheaper iPhone colours and looks.
I find these a bit boring.

In response to the update with the more complete back panel, who else thinks it would look much better with black panels rather than white?

I like it. I might even buy it to replace my aging HTC One and iPod Touch if/when it becomes available on T-Mobile, and especially if the 128GB rumors are true (device unity, at last!).

Though I have to say, most of the champagne-niceness of the color would be completely obfuscated by any case I'd add to the iPhone itself to protect it from my inherent klutziness.

Will the gold option experience the same scratching issues as the black iPhone 5 because of the anodising?

I frankly think champagne iPhone looks rather nice.

But since many iPhone users place their iPhone in a case, and most cases cover 90%+ of the edges and rear surface anyway, there's not much practical needs for offering champagne version. I would much rather see much better iPhone case from Apple. All of their past efforts have been lackluster.

Yes because these 2014 models are so gaudy.
