As was said screenshots will not show you the difference.

You need a comparison chart to show you the difference. Lucky for you I just made one in Pages:).

Hi Buddy i think am gonna get the exact same spec 15" i7 with High resolution as you. I just wanna see it in person before i plonk down the dollars :D

What would be the best way for me to trade my non hi-res 15" for a hi-res one?

If you bought it at the Apple Store, you pretty much take it back tell them you want to go to the high-resolution model and then pay the difference. You may or may not be charged restocking for your current computer… most likely you will be charged unless your current machine has defects.

Tried that. I'm being told that most Apple stores will not carry the hi-res glossy screen, only the matte one.

If you buy the hi-res screen and don't like the high resolution, can't you just turn it down? I'm sure it won't look *AS* good because it's not the native resolution, but with the lower-res screen, you don't even have the option!

same sentiment. Can anyone who already got their hand on one would be so kind to answer this? :D

Or does it already answered with the earlier post of someone posting the side by side screenshots?

Hello,

@ Sneakz

Thank you for your pics !

But anyway, is there a way for you to post them in real size (100%) in photobucket or anywhere else ?

I can see the gain of size, but I would like to see how it is easy or difficult to read a text (menu...) in Hi-Res...

The Hi-Res feature is the only thing which makes me hesitate yet...

Thanks for all !

olivier01 go to page 6, I posted a FULL RES screenshot in 1680x1050. You can download it and check it out. Though there isn't a visible menu, the size of the text in the window toolbars is the same size as the menu text.

just came back from returning my 2.4 core i5 15" regular screen and they offered to switch it with a high-res in stock but they only had the 2.6 core i5 high-res matte and it was too much money, so they returned it and they didn't charge me the fee.

of course, i went there expecting to be charged and was told numerous times "you know there's a 10% restocking fee" but i was pleasantly surprised that i didn't have to pay it :)

I wish I wouldn't have read this! I am still debating trying to do the same with mine... Did you have to ask them to waive the restocking fee? Or they just flat out didn't charge you?

Had this happen to me when returning a 30" ACD. Told them I changed my mind; they said there was a restocking fee, but the sales associate either forgot to or simply didn't charge me. I didn't complain. :)

i remember you in the other thread because we both bought it when they came out and got buyers remorse from the high-res thread XD

i didn't ask. i cooperated and said "yeah, i know about the restocking fee. that's ok." when i saw the return i saw that it wasn't charged. i honestly didn't expect it. the guy went to the back to talk with the manager a number of times though, maybe that had something to do with it?

nice! he did say he'll try to waive the fee and i said "it's fine if you can't." it was absolute pandemonium at the store and the last thing i wanted to be was a difficult customer.

If you don't mind, what store were you at?

I may give it a try tomorrow. If it works, I think I will just go for the 17" base model as opposed to the 15" anti-glare. Now the other problem is what to do about the 200gb of data I moved over with Migration Assistant.... Delete it and hope the exchange it without the fee, or keep it on there assuming the worst and end up handing over years of my stuff to Apple, which I really don't want to do..

Anyone think it would be worth calling and asking for a manager before hand?

I'm standing about 5 feet away from the laptop now, and this text is as clear as ever. How far away do I need to stand exactly ? How often do you even stand 5 feet away reading on your laptop screen ?

Blind. As. A. Bat.
In metric that would be 1.5 meters which is too far away. A proper distance would be 1 meter measured from the screen. But this doesn't say much. For all I know you could be using a higher DPI or font sizes. I can read font sizes of 24 from that distance without any problems too ;)

There are quite a lot of websites nowadays that use a font size of 8. With 1440x900 this becomes quite a problem from 1 to 1.5 meters distance. If that resolution goes up things become smaller and it will be even harder.

Some people are also wearing glasses that make things smaller so they can see things in the distance.

So distance, font sizes and things like wearing glasses all add up make higher resolutions sometimes quite hard to read things. Mostly it's about the amount of effort it takes to read something, it's not like people can't read things. Because the effort is higher some people will experience things like sore eyes and headaches.

In other words: stop trolling and being such a selfish ass. There are other people out there that do have these problems with higher resolutions. Some people think they are comfortable with those higher resolutions but complain about things like tired eyes, sore eyes, headaches, etc. And there are some people who have no problems whatsoever. The only one who is blind as a bat is you because you're too selfish to even understand what problems can arise with higher resolutions. By now there are quite some people who want the 1440x900 resolution because it's easier on the eyes. That should make one wonder...

Don't worry about KnightWRX, the moment I saw him on this thread I knew what was coming. Also, don't try and reason with him, it's just not worth it. If it's not his opinion, it's flat out wrong, and you're an idiot.

I was able to return my 15" core i7 stock for a hi res matte one.

I feel much better about my purchase now.

~1984 -> bitmap raster graphics give me back my text-only displays
~1990's -> 640x480 is overkill, give me back my sub-vga resolutions
~1995-ish -> 256 colours are too much, give me back my 16 colours
~1998-ish -> 800x600 is way too much resolution, the text is too small, give me back my VGA
~2000-ish -> 1024x768 web pages don't look very well with this resolution, give me back 800x600, it's more than enough, also 3Dfx Voodoo graphics
~2003-ish -> 16:10 are way too short, give me back my 4:3 display
~2005-ish -> 1440x900 on 15" displays? are they nuts? Give me back my 1366x768

~2010-ish -> ????????????

Wich one I would complain?

16:9 or 1680x1050 on 15,4" displays... Apple?

Just for your consideration...

Original Macintosh = 72 dpi
1440x900 MBP = 110dpi
1680x1050 MBP = 128dpi
iPad = 131dpi

Well, why the hell not?

The better the resolution, the more detailed the text will look, try opening a well typeset PDF in Preview, zoom in/zoom out until it is the same size as an A4 paper. I will notice that the text becomes hard to read on the screen but ok on the paper, despite being the same size!

For web pages, don't worry, text will always look nice because they are well scalable.

Then I would be stuck with the restocking fee, unless there is a way around it that I am unaware of?

im not sure if this has been answered yet but if you go to the store that you bought it from and explain that you want to get the high res option instead, they will usually waive the restocking fee because you want to spend more money than you originally did anyway. if they dont offer to waive it, push the point and they will eventually waive it.

Can someone compare a 17 inch resolution with the 15hr? I'm stuck between the two and I'm also afraid the 15 hr will look too small. :(

Same here... I'm all but certain that, as I've been told, that is strictly a CTO option and not a model that will be available in stores :-( Have been hoping to find an Apple store that would at least have a demo model to look at ( and possibly talk the Mgr out of? <g>)
I had a 17" Hi Res and Loved it. Sold it and then got a 15" C2D. 17" HiRes was a HUGE productivity boost for me -- so now know i need to have the higher res, and would have gone for the 17" i7 without hesitation until Apple introduced the 15" H Res. But am hesitant to go for the 15" (for size) Hi Res sight unseen.

So this is a super valuable thread personally. Just wish someone who got one would comment vs 17 Hi REs from first hand experience, or had some screen shots or something

the 17" MBP is 133 DPI and the High Res 15" is 129 DPI so the size of fonts and menus etc will be almost identical to the 17" that you owned. The only difference will be 2" diagonally less space than the 17", but a lot more portability aswell

personally i think go for the Hi Res 15"
