I call fake. True iPad mini mockups usually have a ruler on the side.

I am fully expecting the iPad mini to come with a ruler when it's launched.

I like the overall look from the front, but I'm not a fan of the new shell. Why not use the same shell (albeit smaller) as the maxiPad? It would be cheaper to manufacture and wouldn't clutter the iPad line.

maxiPad.....that raised a smile....just see the Apple Execs in a meeting room throwing names around and nerd blushing when somebody raised the idea...:D

I sure hope that with iPad 2 internals that this goes with a note-quite-but-a-little-bit-retina 1024x768 resolution.

Be a pain in the bum to develop for yet another different resolution.

Or maybe I'm just a lazy pig-dog...

I know this may be off subject but the one thing i wish they'd improve on is sports on siri.

They have finally added it, but it really needs to be refined.

iPad Mini Resolution

I wonder what the resolution of the iPad mini will be? To hit the price point they're looking for I doubt it's going to be a retina display. My bet is that it's going to be the same resolution as the iPad2...that'll still look pretty good on a device that small because the pixel density will be higher and also it won't force developers to design for yet another resolution.

I really hope that they don't come out with a iPad mini with some sort of weird resolution. The last thing developers (and their graphic designer colleagues) need is yet another resolution to code and develop images for. :( Currently we already have to deal with: classic iPhone, retina iPhone, classic iPad, retina iPad, (and most likely coming on Sept 12th) stretched retina iPhone. Please Apple...don't add another one to the list!

Maybe it's just me but I'm more excited and hoping for the 13 in rMBP, new iMac and Iphone 5 than this...

I wish I could see why the iPad mini needs to exist. Having iPads in two form factors doesn't seem necessary, for the basic reason that the iPhone is pretty much the same thing.

Although I could be biased because I never saw a use for the iPad (but I do not play many iOS games so that may be why).

Price. You'll be able to buy two for the same price as one of the tricked out big iPads.

And an iPad is extremely useful, for far more than games. I almost never play any on mine.

Headphones

I don't think the headphone jack will be at the base no matter what parts have been leaked.

On the phone it makes sense for taking it out of your pocket and holding it in your hand when making a facetime.

With the pad it's in a cover so unless they're thinking you'll have it in your bag while connected to headphones! Also holding it and listening to music would mean holding it clear of the table/desk in front of you rather that resting is on a table. Very uncomfortable for long facetime conversations.

DOn't think that'll happen, iPod and iPhone yes, iPad no

Of course it will be 1024x768, using the same pixel density as the iPhone 3GS. This has all been well-documented. However, it is not accurate to say that resolution is even a little bit retina. It's a decent pixel density, but nowhere close to Retina, and will be quite a bit lower than competing tablets such as the Nexus 7.

Three common complaints for the mini will be:
1) Screen resolution is too low.
2) The whole thing is still too big. I guarantee you will hear this.
3) Too expensive compared to competition (i.e. Nexus 7).

However, I expect it to sell like hotcakes. The big question in my mind is the relative extents to which it will (a) cannibalize regular iPad sales, (b) take share from Android or Kindle Fire, and (c) compete against non-consumption.

Why are mockups front page news?
I don't get it either. And no doubt these mockups will show up elsewhere on the web with headlines like 'is this the new iPad Mini'?

IMO, mockups of what something might look like based on rumors that may or may not be true is not newsworthy, even for a rumor site.

This will definitely be a big hit with schools.
3 for under $1000 (assuming they're $300 or lower) is music to school IT budgets ears.
Bring it on!

The iPod Touch is in that range... I think Apple will sell these starting at $400.
Because people that are in the market for a smaller tablet will buy it no matter how close the price is to the bigger iPad :p

Some things iPad do better than iphone for me:

Reading books (e-reader doesn't work better with color books like the technicals ones, catalogues, art books and so on)
Reading comic books
Reading magazines
Watching movie/shows on the go
Chatting
Primary Browsing device on the go
Writing emails (writing anything)

The iPad mini is believed to be based on the iPad 2 internals, presumably allowing for a much lower price, and if there is a technical reason that the iPad 2 won't support Siri, then the iPad mini may not as well.

Technical reasons aside, since when has sharing internals ever stopped Apple artificially limiting a device via software...

I'm betting iPad Mini & New iPad will both support Siri. iPad 2 will not regardless of sharing hardware of iPad mini.

I'm actually most excited about the iPad Mini as I'll actually be buying that when it's released as long as it's within the suspected $299 range and not lacking in some glaring way (no forward facing camera for Face time would qualify IMO).

While I'm interested in seeing what the new iPhone has to offer, I'm not eligible for a upgrade for another year and have no plans on making efforts to sell my 4s in order to get a 5. Gets old going through the sell before event for as much as you can before the prices plummet game IMO.

It looks really nice! No doubt they'd sell like hotcakes.

I'm more excited for the event right now though..... ONE WEEK. ONE.

Not if it's priced at $299 it won't (perhaps if it's a 64gb model).
I'd like to see a 8gb wi-fi for $199 to compete directly with the Nexus 7.

The supposed design of the iPad Mini looks really nice. It somehow reminds me of the 1st generation iPod Nano which is in my opinion one of the all-time great Apple designs. The 'Mini' will undoubtedly be a gigantic hit.

Yes it will, people will still go for the 'perceived' better, commercially desirable, and identifiyably known brand regardless of it being more expensive.

Do home brands ever sell more than the desirable main brands ?

It's like saying buy wallmart cornflakes instead of Kellogs...... even if they tasted the same, Kellog's will still sell more and at a higher price....

Thank you very much, Macrumors.com for the time and expense for this pre-show treat! While there's a few complainers (and they're always are), the majority of us had a lot of fun with the video, pics and 3D model!

-----------

As far as the ipad mini is concerned, it makes sense that it be hobbled with lack of retina and now, Siri, if the rumor is correct. I'm not happy about that but... I bet we get dictation with the new Mini.

Apple cant give every marquee feature to this much cheaper iPad. There's got to be reasons to get the 10" model. Again, not thrilled, but I can understand. I don't think it's a hardware limitation though (just like it's not for the iPad 2)... I think that eventually, it'll come down the pipes as new features. For pay? Probably, but perhaps for very cheap.
