Of course it will be 1024x768, using the same pixel density as the iPhone 3GS. This has all been well-documented. However, it is not accurate to say that resolution is even a little bit retina. It's a decent pixel density, but nowhere close to Retina, and will be quite a bit lower than competing tablets such as the Nexus 7.

Three common complaints for the mini will be:
1) Screen resolution is too low.
2) The whole thing is still too big. I guarantee you will hear this.
3) Too expensive compared to competition (i.e. Nexus 7).

However, I expect it to sell like hotcakes. The big question in my mind is the relative extents to which it will (a) cannibalize regular iPad sales, (b) take share from Android or Kindle Fire, and (c) compete against non-consumption.

Of course! Well hush my stupid mouth!!

"However, it is not accurate to say that resolution is even a little bit retina" Really? Well surely it's a little bit more retina than the iPad 2 what with being the same resolution but 30% smaller?

Or am I making a fool of myself again?

Why are you questioning a RUMOR site!? Do you not know where you are?

Ugh, it's fake, I don't like it, etc... :: "Hey. don't forget this site is called MacRumors for a reason..."

OMG! It's real, I love it, cool.... :: "Once again, MacRumors was the first to bring you exclusive details on the newest product..." :apple:

Kinda having a hard time believing that the bezel on the "iPad mini" would be so thin on the sides that the current batch of mockups show. You still will need somewhere to hold on to the device. The phone gets away with unequal proportions on top/bottom to side bezel because it fits in the palm of your hand. How often do you see bezels on Apple devices that vary from top/bottom to sides? Heck, the nook has an even border bezel on it. It's about design. If the "iPad mini" does look like that, I worry about future product design. It just doesn't look "Apple".

No, but I think you're looking at the term "Retina" the wrong way. Although it's a marketing term (and a great one, IMHO), Apple's use of the term Retina means something very specific. When you're way below that resolution, it's not really appropriate to start invoking the term.

Retina iPhone: 326 PPI
Retina iPad: 264 PPI
iPad mini: 163 PPI (expected)
Old iPad: 132 PPI

So the new iPad is better in terms of pixel density than the iPad 2, but it's nowhere close to Retina. Likewise, I wouldn't say "in Power mode, the Prius is a little more dragster-like than before". Technically yeah, but not really a meaningful way to think about it.

The iPad mini should look "decent" as far as pixel density goes, but it sure won't be a high point of the product. I expect it will show up in the "minus" column of reviews.

At least that's the way it looks to me right now.

i'd buy the lowest model mini at 200$. I think i'd even buy it at 250$. But i wouldn't touch it at 300$. I'd just buy a refurb ipad 2 for $350.

Smaller and lighter means most people will be happy to either hold it in the palm of the hand or gripped by the bottom portion of the bezel. I would worry about future product design if each device wasn't optimized.

This looks great but I am still trying to figure out why I need a 4 inch iPhone and a 7.85 inch iPad mini. I have never used a tablet on a regular basis. Is there really that much of a difference that I would need both??

There's a huge difference. The phone experience can't come close to the pad experience. But, both have their uses.

4" screen vs. (almost) 8" screen.

Which would you rather watch? a 32" or 55" tv? ;)

is this an iPad Mini mockup or a Jumbo iPod touch?

from teh mockups it looks more and more like a Jumbo iPod Touch.

Big iPad will be seeing Little iPad in court.

that has to be the dumbest comment I've ever seen on this site.

IF this mini/maxi whatever is read, there's zero grounds for anything. it's the same design patent after all.

THat would you would think that comment is even funny enough to post sarcastic is just . that 8 folks actually rated up the comment is a WTF?

Did anyone else look at the WebGL 3D model? It's just the iPad Mini in space, since the proportions of the mini and the new iPad are extremely similar, there's no way to tell you're looking at a smaller device (yes, I know, I know, the icons, etc.). Thanks for going to all this effort MacRumors, but it's kinda useless.

maybe you don't. and so don't get one. It's not some kind of law you have to get everything that Apple releases.

I know some folks like the idea because reading on the iPhone, especially on sites that refuse to do a mobile version, sucks ball sweat (elephant balls even). but if that is not a concern for you, don't stress it. Just be happy with your iPhone

do the math, it's an easy enough formula to find. As is the distance to the eye that they used for the current ipads. calculate the dpi needed, what would be present if they used the same res as the ipad 2 (you might have to do a range since we don't know the exact display size at this point, run it give or take say half an inch either way) and see if it works out as possible

unless the very specific math that Apple uses to define the term (that they have shared with us) warrants the resolution. Because that is the key, not some 300+ dpi etc nonsense. And certainly not the claims that they can't do retina on this or that (like the 27 inch imacs and Cinema displays) because no display exists with double the current resolution. The math doesn't work out to double but more like 12% more pixels and that might be totally doable even now.

I will only be buying the iPad mini if it has a retina display. Having used the iPhone 4S and now the owner of a retina MBP, there is no way I can ever go back to such low resolutions, even if on a smaller screen.

Having said that, there is no way on Earth you get retain for a $200-$249 price point, which I think is where Apple needs to be to kill all other 7" tablets. Retina probably pushes that to $299. I can't see Apple going that high though if they want this to be a 7" killer.

i agree.. ipad mini needs to be retina.. or at least the same res and the ipod touch 4G.. anything less will be a fail .. and yes the leaked dimensions seek slightly too big the kindle fire has the perfect size IMO
the price will always be slightly ti high thats just how apple doe things....lol

Small iPad. Wow. What a slap in the face to Steve Jobs.

Not necessarily.

Steve said a smaller iPad was bunk, not a smaller tablet. Even in Eddy's email he just said a "7 inch market" and that Steve was receptive to that market idea. Not how they would do it.

We don't know that any of this iPad mini stuff is real. it could be the 2012 teardrop. But assuming that it is, we don't know that it will be an iPad running iPad apps. It could be a larger iPod Touch, along side the current or even replacing it. Running iPod Touch/iPhone apps which were made for a smaller screen and thus lack some of the issues that Steve was talking about. They would scale up just like they do on the 10 inch iPad but not as grainy (hopefully)

I'm not sure I buy this. Steve said there is a laptop and a phone, and nothing in between. The iPad was supposed to fill that void perfectly, not part of that void leaving out a randomly sized smaller version.

I feel that the 7 inch iPizzle is more reactionary than revolutionary. Amazon kicked some butt, and now Apple is trying to squeeze into the space Amazon "created." I know created is a strong term, but Amazon filled a gap that Apple left in their creation of the large-ish iPad.

I assume by both you mean the iPhone and the iPad.

Yes, it's bigger than the iPhone. That is the difference. That is the point.

If your needs are fulfilled by an iPhone, then you are good to go.

I like to read web pages and watch videos on my iPad. The larger screen works much better for me for me than the iPhone. The iPhone is more portable so it's always with me and it is what I use when I'm out running errands and such. At home, the iPhone is on the table and the iPad is what gets used.

Sir, you got trolled. :D

But I do not understand that iPhone will chande dock connector, iPad mini will change dock connector.. and then they expect to sell during all christmas the iPad with the old dock???

They should update all the line at once!
