This is exactly the kind of sh** you learn in business school never to do. Why release a brand new product that destroys the sales of your current products? There isn't room for keeping older phone models around at the same price point as this new thing - unless the plan is to never sell older models once the current one comes out and thus reduce inventory levels? It just seems plain silly to me.

Yeh this comment was a huge Doh!

Samsung are already hammering Apple sales with cheaper offerings. It's not ideal but Apple do not operate in a vacuum. Better that they also compete with a cheaper offering than try and ignore what is happening in the world......and also hope to pick up some cash via the Apps.

Furthermore I suspect that even though it WILL take some sales from the higher-end products, I think the bottomline margin will still be quite nice!!

I hope these are not the colors Apple releases. I'm not happy with Apple's choices of colors lately. This current model of iPod Nano's colors are awful, pale and sick looking.

Nano's are anodised, where as these new iPhones are plastic. Even if it is the "same" colour, it will look a lot richer and more saturated in plastic.

If you don't like these colours, you're probably not in the target market for either the Nano or Low Cost iPhone ;)

There are too many Apple snobs in here...

I can definitely see this happening and I doubt it will harm Apple's premium image, and I bet those renderings aren't far off either.

I have a white iPhone 5 but honestly I think they look ok, especially the white one, probably because I have always liked apple poly white products e.g. the old white macbook.

My wife's ready to get a new phone but isn't in any rush, she was planning to get an iPhone 5, but I may just make her hang on for one of these, she's a clumsy one so the plastic shell may be more appropriate:D

I think you are right.

Some readers believe that the cheap iphone should not exist (snob) or look as good as the top of the range iphone 5s (foolish).

That is a great phone for people who cant afford the better one...

Whats is wrong with it?

We must always remember, there are a percentage (how much I have no idea) of apple users, who don't actually want Apple to become so popular and so wel priced that everyone can afford one.

they slag off the cheaper competition, but at the same time they actually want others to buy these cheap phones to make them feel special.

It's the same with cloths, cars and even more so women's perfume.

They need something to buy that makes THEM feel better than someone else, presumably as something is lacking in their lives and they need a product to make them feel they are better.

If their "special thing" if made too cheap, or owned by too many, then they won't feel special themselves any more.

Yes, I know, it's sad, but kids are like this after a certain age and even sadder some don't grow out of this feeling till much later on in their lives, when they relax and don't feel they have anything to prove any more.

Id take this over an iPhone 5 - why? Because I bet the wear and tear wont be as bad as this iPhone 5 has been. Stupid Anodized Aluminium!

Completely agree.

A phone that I don't have to put in a case would definitely be a bonus.

What do we think the internals of this would be?

I think the A5 is too old to use inside it now, so A6?

I think it will have the iPad mini camera though and 16gb of storage.

But then if it was $400 off contract (for example) I think a lot of people would pick this over a discounted 5 ($550) and 5S ($650)?
A5 isn't too old.

There are no apps that phase it in the 4S. It's actually the perfect candidate, a further die shrink could also really bring the power/heat down. I think we've seen an experiment in that with the tweaked AppleTV3 back in the spring?

In September, new proposed lineup?
Plastic iPhone
5
5S (7th)

I believe Apple will chop off all 3.5" iOS devices this year. This is a perfect choice for iPhone 4S replacement. Depending on what built quality and surface finishing use, it wouldn't look cheap if it's made of Unibody polycarbonate plastic housing with extremely hard and ultra fine ceramic coating.

A good example of ceramic coating is Rado's watch. You never feel it cheap.

Stay tuned.

My point was they shouldn't be competing head to head with themselves with a cheaper new phone next to an iPhone 4/4S, because THAT doesn't make sense. After reading all the comments it seems like they're probably just doing away with the old screen sizes and 30 pin connectors to streamline everything, while maintaining a presence in the "lower cost" market via this new thing. I like it, and it makes sense.

Why is everyone assuming young people have no taste, so will like these colours?

Perhaps children under 10 might like them, but they aren't really the target market for iPhones.

That's exactly why I opted for the white iPhone 5. iOS 7 only further validates my choice. :p

You haven't seem all the kids below 10 with iPhones now? Sadly, I'm not kidding.

The renderings make it look better. In the photos it looks like the back shell is more rounded. The only one that looks good is the white one. The rest look... ugly.

Like BMW then, 3-Series might sell a lot but they still need smaller, cheaper 1-Series for those who would buy Golf or Civic instead.

I could be a fan of these for a prepaid carrier. I would never agree to one of these at $0.99 with a 2 year contract.

I like the bright colors and I don't get why everyone is saying plastic = cheap = junk. Tell that to everyone who is breaking their iPhone 5.

Are these really low cost? I doubt it. Read somewhere its going to cost around $450.00 + and that's not cheap!

The power of the iPhone has basically reached the point of diminishing returns for my requirements. My iPhone 5 is more than powerful enough for my needs. Hell, the 4S would be perfectly adequate if it had a bigger screen. If this low cost phone comes out at $299-$399 off contract I will probably buy it, switch from Verizon to T-Mobile and save hundreds of dollars a year.

I'm not sure if this device is really in Apple's best interest, but it's certainly in mine! :D

It's cool, only advantages to this.

Instead of having to buy a plastic casing for a glass or scratchy-aluminium, they removed the useless glass/aluminium and directly put the plastic casing around the phone. This means this iPhone will be:

- slimmer
- lighter
- cheaper
- better looking

I'm not sure if this device is really in Apple's best interest,

It could be so that they can get an iPhone into the hands of more people at a lower cost whereas the iPhone as we know it, may be out of the price range for a lot of others. A lower cost iPhone could help boost sales and bring people into the Apple ecosystem and allow for a potential in additional sales in the Mac market as well.
