I would totally get a white one of these (or all black if it's made) over getting a 5S, if it had better internals than the 5. I like the look of this more, rather than the two tone back of the 5.

This phone would be a massive hit i think. I get so many parents that come into my store interested in buying an iphone for there teenage kids, then walking out cause the outright is just too high!

I would also imagine it would be a huge hit in the emerging markets like india.

I'm fine with a plastic back if it is done like on the 3G(S) - but this looks tacky. Though - if true - might explain the strange colours and overall design of iOS7, which would be a perfect match...

This is exactly the kind of sh** you learn in business school never to do. Why release a brand new product that destroys the sales of your current products? There isn't room for keeping older phone models around at the same price point as this new thing - unless the plan is to never sell older models once the current one comes out and thus reduce inventory levels? It just seems plain silly to me.

It makes perfect sense in Apple's case.

The current older models are the iPhone 4 & 4S. Neither feature LTE, which is now a smartphone standard feature in the US. The carriers want it included and it's no longer a premium component. The older models also carry the old 30 pin dock connector, which isn't used on any other Apple products. Continuing to support that hardware only serves to give consumers an incentive to not upgrade to newer models of other Apple products. Additionally, they feature 3:2 ratio displays, iPhone 5 and the 5th gen iPod touch both feature 16:9 displays.

I could see Apple killing off the 4 & 4S for the above reasons and replacing them both with this new model. It could be offered free with contract or maybe a middle ground price like $50. I'd imagine it'll feature iPhone 5 components inside. Then they can release an iPhone 5S model alongside it with a nicer camera, a few new features and an A7 processor. By offering this model in candy colors it'll appeal to kids (whose parents are currently buying them old model iPhones, cheap Android phones or hand-me-down iPhones) but not adults. Adults will prefer the more mature looking iPhone 5/5S/6/whatever they call it.

Kids will love this. Parents will love that it's reasonably priced. Apple will love that the entire family gets further embedded in Apple's ecosystem. While it's not the high-end super phone that everyone might drool over, it's a very smart move on Apple's part.

But for some reason, a lot of people refuse to buy something that was produced a couple of years ago. The iPhone 4 isn't just low cost; it's old. There will be people who want a cheap iPhone that must be new. It doesn't really make sense because the same people would be fine buying an iMac that hasn't been refreshed for 1.5 years.

Exactly my point. A "new" $450 phone will sell significantly better than a 2-3 year old phone at the same price point.

Edit: And yet, it won't steal much from the full-price iPhone. Because the people that are going to buy the newest iPhone want the newest, BEST iPhone.

Imagine if Apple just leaked ideas and the rumor communities basically build the product for them.

I don't care for this design. I feel like the 3Gs was a more esthetically pleasing phone. Also felt more solid than any Samsung phone I've owned.

Your opinion would hold more weight if you could spell aesthetic.

Then how come people are buying the 16GB iPhone 5 at all? It's not the best.

What if this low cost one does not cost more than oldest of the 3 models always available ?
It brings homogeneity across product line in terms of screen size and embedded components.
This is exactly what you learn to do in business school.
Trick will be to do a proper use of marketing so as to introduce a fun powerful entry level iphone who does more than many android phones rather than a low cost for poor people one...

These mockups are using a metallic finish, but the spy shots show they aren't like that.

The real thing (if it's real) is just florescent plastic and looks much worse.

Doesn't look half bad actually. My next color is white (I alternate my phone colors), and this one looks kinda cool. I would just need specifics on the internals.

Eww

my personal opinion i'd rather have the look of the iphone 3gs models than these. I really hope the iPhone 5s's come in different colors too, but not that neon crap. :D

The really funny thing is, that most people who complain about colours and cheap plasticky look, have their classy aluminium and glass unibody iPhones wrapped in cheap plasticky and colourful shells ;)

Cheaper iPhone?

Apple already has a low-cost iPhone. The iPhone 4 is currently being sold for FREE (or, if you buy from AT&T, 1¢) and it can't get any cheaper than that.

I seriously doubt these rumors... but then again, I didn't think Apple was stupid enough to do what they did with iOS 7, so this could in fact be true.

iPod nano killed iPod Mini.
iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch killed iPod.
Macbook Air killed Macbook.

Why kill it? Well if they don't, someone else will. Might as well do it first.

The white one actually looks really nice. Better than the white iPhone 5 in fact.

FREE?
What is free is signing a 2 years contract that obligate you pay every month around 40$? Thats 900$ of which only 400$ are the service usage. The rest (500$) is the phone and this is not cheap. And if you chose some more expensive plan like 80$ you end up paying almost 2.000$ in two years just to have an iPhone in your pocket. And you cant use the phone on other networks or outside your country.

I hope these are not the colors Apple releases. I'm not happy with Apple's choices of colors lately. This current model of iPod Nano's colors are awful, pale and sick looking. I can understand Apple wanting to change things up but the Nano models from 2008 and 2009 were much better to my eye.

I'll believe it when I see it from Apple or there is an announcement.

Always the 'lower cost' iPhones have been the previous generation.

Any indication in iOS 7 of a new SKU iPhone?

Are people really that upset about something they don't have to buy?

These will be massive sellers with the younger generation. If they turn out to have the form factor of the iPod touches but can be used as a phone i'd be tempted also.
