I don't know one person that brings a laptop to school. Phones are prohibited by school policy but everyone carries them anyway, so as long as they are neither seen nor heard they don't really care. My school is rather small, about 1400 kids, but we don't really have all that much use for us to bring our own computers. If we are doing an activity that requires a computer the teacher will just book time in one of the many computer labs.

1400 is small....haha no not really for a high school thats on the larger end. i know my hs was 2000 but then again i know many more people that have graduating classes of less than a hundred

For those of us that are actually interested in doing the best and most organized job they can it has nothing to do with 'showing off'.

im still having a hard time grasping how note taking on a computer is ever more efficient than listening and taking notes in class. not only can you not free hand or put notes anywhere on the page, other students have to put up with the very annoying typing sounds. no offense but i seriously get pissed at those who distract my concentration with their typing. the only compter i can see being useful for notes is the kind with the pen you write on a screen. as for presentations, i just always have a usb drive (that contains the files im working on for a particular week or so) as every teacher is able to get access to a computer for presentation purposes and in my case I am able to access labs to manipulate the files there

as far as showing off, i believe students who bring computers to class that arent programming related or what not are showing off since you really don't need them for class and i could not imagine anyone saying that they do especially in hs.

i think (based off my obsevations in many classrooms) the majority of people need a computer but only to supplement their class work as in program useage, presentations, and the like

heck, even in my programming class, not many people brought computers

sooo in summary since i believe it's not needed, if it gets stolen/damaged you pretty much asked for it

When I was in high school, I did not have this problem as laptop is very expensive computer. High School ages are tricky one; there are many things going on. One of the things would be to show your expensive Mac to your fellow students. If you feel the there is a theft problem at your school, then, don't take it with you. I am not sure how it is at high school now; but, when I was there, I did not have the time to use a laptop computer in a meaningful way if I had a laptop.
I try not to show what I have at my place as I don't want to draw any unwanted attention from stranger. There is no point showing off. If there is someone you would like to wow, then, bring that person to your place instead.

i completely agree but to each his own. BUT, if hs's operate the same as they do right now (which i doubt). I will never let my kid take a 1.5k machine to school....even IF he paid for it as I believe as a parent, you have to make the better judgement call.

i remember taking an alien toy to school when i was in 1st grade and some kid stole it from me. what if that had been a 2k laptop??

Why would I take pen/paper notes in class just to have to go home and type them on my macbook? You may not see the sense in it, but when I make perfect scores on notes/assignments/presentations because of my professionalism, I see it clearly.

Edit: Also, my messenger bag with my notebook inside NEVER leaves my shoulder. No matter what.

When I take my Mac or PC out on the road, I assume there is a possibility it would be stolen. I am not in school anymore (thank god); so I don't have to worry about theft issues too much. At my place, if my Mac is stolen, I can go to my company's security room to review security video recording to find the thief to get him/her prosecuted and fired at the same time (I have no mercy when someone tries to mess with my property; no mercy; I will make sure that person who messes with my property will get the full effect of the legal ramification (I know I will have a fun out of it as I will see to it he/she will be punished financially).

Of course, I will make sure I don't attract too much attention to what I have in real life so that I don't attract unwanted attention.

My old highschool gave all there students iBooks the year after I graduated to use during the 4 years they are at that school. I think they can buy it after they graduate too not sure though.

In my school everyone can use laptops, but only extra-time candidates (dyslexics, dyspraxics etc.) including me really do. My macbook is ideal, and beats the 4-5 mins startup times of relatively new PC laptops. A friend has an iBook G3 and gets along great with it.

My iBook G4 has been to my high school many time, most often for when I have a presentation to work on or work to do in Fireworks or Photoshop. Officially, laptops aren't allowed on the schools network but I kinda brownnose the IT guy so I'm 'allowed'.

I go to a public 9-12 high school with around 600 enrolled.

Eventually, we're going to a wireless campus, but probably not until after I graduate. Supposedly I'm supposed to have a Core 2 Duo iMac awaiting my return from Winter holiday, but we shall see...

even though i go to a catholic school, i dont bring it to school cause there is a big stealing problem and it would just feel weird carrying aroung my mb

When I was in high school I would occasionally bring my laptop to school, I had a big ass Alienware laptop, so that hurt the shoulders. I would use it in study halls mostly to play a game or watch a movie. None of my teachers cared. It was impractical, as any laptop would be, for classes in high school. This is because classes in high school don't involve many notes. Many classes are worksheet driven. And the format of them doesn't allow excessive note taking that would warrant a laptop.

It is much different in college though. I bring my MacBook (sold the Alienware) to class every day and take notes. There is rarely an in class worksheet to be done, so it makes a laptop more practical.

PS: My school also had no wireless internet nor was there a way to easily connect to the wired network. Plus there were 2 desktops in every classroom as well as a laptop for every teacher and multiple computer labs.

i wouldn't bring it, first really no need to, and second it would probably be stolen in a heartbeat if i wouldn't have it on me at all times

i think i'm going to bring my macbook tomorrow. i dont really need it except note taking and my school got cheap and decided not to give agendas so im going to use ical and stickies for that but a couple kids at my school bring laptops. my fellow mac-er brings his everyday. it's nice in classes when you are writing basic notes for 2 hours :D as far as stealing, i'll have it on me at all times so no worries.

I can bring my MBP i just never do cause i dont want to worry about it gettin messed up, and i just take notes with pen and paper.

I'm not a high schooler but I find if I take my MBP to class I don't pay attention :D Unless I'm working on an assignment in the library or something (when all the computers are usually taken) thats about the only time I take it. Plus its heavy and it gives me a sore shoulder when its in my bag :(

i brought an ibook to HS and carried it all the time. Just for gym class i dropped it off in the office.....
worked great

I bought it a couple times with me in high school, I didn't use it in class though, I brought it when I stayed after school to work on the newspaper (oh my, that was fun, being there till 3 AM on school nights for deadlines) because we were always short of computers and any extras helped. Plus, the computers we had were OS9, and my computer at the time, iBook, was either Jaguar or Panther, can't remember. And let's be honest, I'd rather use Windows (even Vista) over any Mac OS pre OSX. I ALWAYS had my iBook on my person. I went to a good public school (anyone who says you need to go to a private school for a good education needs to ****) and theft wasn't really a problem, but I worked my ass off to buy it and wasn't about to let it out of my sight, I didn't want to risk it.

I used to bring my PowerBook with me to classes at college and use it during class, but more often than not, I was playing games or surfing the web instead of taking notes and my grades took a hit. So now, unless I have a specific need for it, it stays home. I'm constantly around computers on campus, and I work on campus as well in IT so I basically sit in front of a computer (2 actually, a Pee Cee and an iMac) a few hours a day for work, so I've never even needed it. I think it's only been to campus once this semester, and that was because the network engineer (whose also a Mac guy but hadn't yet upgraded to 10.5) heard that the Leopard betas had some issues with our WPA network and wanted me to test it out (worked fine. More that can be said about Vista and the wireless network when it was first released :D).

My PocketPC works just fine when I need quick access to internet or my e-mail (or games or the MacRumors forums or anything else to distract me :D)

I really see no need to bring a laptop to high school, in fact, if I was the father of a high school student there is no way I would allow them to bring a laptop to school. I do pretty well in college and rarely take notes on my macbook. In fact most of the students I know who take notes on their comeputers tend to score lower on tests and in class then all the people I know who take notes by hand (I wonder why?). There is also evidence that suggests physically writing something down actually helps you to retain material better, I personally find it to be this way as well (I know people who find it otherwise though).

Why would I take pen/paper notes in class just to have to go home and type them on my macbook? .

Why do you need to retype your notes on your MacBook? Can't you just keep them in your notebook and look at the notebook when you need?

As a college student, I have found absolutely no reason to bring my MB to classes with me. I take better notes with pen/paper, and if I need to use a computer, there are plenty of computer labs all around campus (which all have brand new 24" iMacs  ).

I hate when people do bring their laptops to lecture. No reason, unless they have a learning disability and have to have it. It's really distracting hearing people type.
