Mystery Port

I'm wondering if some of these pictures are of older designs and that's the reason that port is covered by tape because they scrapped whatever port it was going to be.

Anyone else think the spy shots look like this nVidia press release photo?

nvidia_macbook.jpg

The new slot loading drive is on the side, not the front - so my guess is that is an old pic they've dug up or something?

And who says there won't be a price cut on the MacBook Pro (read: most affordable notebook with FW), bringing prices in line with or just slightly above current high-end MacBook prices?

Well yes, let's see what Tuesday will bring. Anything is possible. :)

That is not a good set of specs. The rumour said about 12 different SKU's, that's more like 15 different SKU's.

Here's what I think:

2 13.3" MB (starting at $799, although this COULD conceivably be 14.4" or so as well)
2 15.4" MB (starting at $899)
2 15.4" MBP (starting at $1099)
2 17.1" MBP (starting at $1299)
2 13.3" MBA (starting at $1599)
2 15.4" MBA (starting at $1799)

With the MBAs, a 128GB SSD BTO option drags the price up to $3100 or so, that would explain the $3100 high-end price tag. Most SSDs are expensive still.

BJ

I think that your pricing is a bit too agressive at points here is how i see it.

2 13.3" MB (starting at $799)
2 15.4" MB (starting at $999)
2 15.4" MBP (starting at $1699)
2 17.1" MBP (starting at $2299)
2 13.3" MBA (starting at $1499)
I think 12 models is too many and I think that with this pricing the line differentiation still stands. What are your thoughts?

I'm still wondering what the following thing could be on the "regular macbook"
MB.jpg

I'm going with battery connector.

On the current MacBooks the prongs stick out more, presumably because plastic flexes more and so the metal contacts need to be longer to allow for that OR that what you see is just a mount/holder for a larger battery terminal.

I also have a theory that the number of prongs can very depending on the number of cells in the battery. 2 prongs per cell would mean the current MacBook has 3 cells (can anyone verify this?)

So there we go! Anyone else agree?

What about a 13-inch MBP? I, for one, would love to see that. And we've certainly heard plenty of rumors that there will be such a machine.

Here's hoping the logic boards won't overheat - apparently lots of Air issues (although my brother has yet to experience anything like it)

now you're telling me it's gonna cost maybe $1500 just to get a computer with a firewire port?
No of course not. Mac mini and iMac are less expensive. But alright, let's just look at notebook prices:

MacBooks start at 1100$ today.

Rumor has is that Apple will introduce the new MacBook at below 1000$.
FireWire ports could be a welcome means of differentiation.

oh my gawd..seriously? name some...and now narrow that list down to uses that a macbook user would use...pretty please

I would guess that about 98%-99% of audio interfaces on the market currently are FireWire based. All of the good interfaces are at least. Apple has spent a long time building the myth that macs are so much better for anything creative (ie music)... and now they are possilby pulling rug out from under the whole community? That's lame.

Their whole marketing plan over the past few years (pc vs. mac) has been to show that they do more than just "buisiness" related stuff. Earlier you posted that no one would care about the loss of firewire (like the blonde girl you mentioned)... And to degree you are right... The only people who are likely to care are the people who APPLE HAS BEEN MARKETING TO OVER THE PAST
FEW YEARS!!!!!!!!

I don't think so.

3 MB - 13.3, 15.4, 17.1
3 MBP - 14.4, 16.1, 18.1

Uhm, you people are totally missing the point. There will NOT be just SIX or NINE sku's. There is (according to the rumour) TWELVE sku's. Unless Apple is totally prepared to offer 2 new macbooks (honestly, Apple can make the MacBook Air a "netbook", but that wouldn't match with the whole $800 price speculation, because most of these "netbooks" play in the sub-$500 space. So, I see the MacBook Air being the most expensive MacBook, it's been coming for awhile, and MacBook Pro prices seriously need to come down to Earth.

$1300 for 17" macbook pros.

Which currently start out at $2,799

Would you be offended if I told you you're completely off your rocker?
I'm not offended. 17" MBPs are overpriced for the kind of features you get. Hell, most 17" PC notebooks are $1,500 or so whereas the 17" MBPs are, as you said, $2,799. I'm sorry, but in these horribly stupid economic times, there is absolutely no place for a $2,000-plus notebook that can be had for about $1,300 less. At least people could actually AFFORD halfway decent MBPs. The price difference between a 17" MBP and most 17" laptops is astronomical, and if Steve Jobs cannot see that because his head's up his ass, then that's fine.

I'd have a 15" or a 17" MB anyday. It'd quell the whining that is an unfortunate fact of Mac life. If Apple just offers a 13" and doesn't do a damn thing to bring the entire MBP line (and even the MB line) together, then there's only going to be more bitching and moaning and whining. I think Apple's smart enough to say that making 15" and 17" Macbooks (NOT pros) and making them halfway affordable can only be a smart move, and it would take great strides to removing a barrier to Mac ownership (price).

Macs have always been seen as "too pricey", but if SJ and Apple can put out the vast majority of its notebooks out for a REASONABLE price (i.e. below $2k), then Apple will definitely win over more people.

I'd think you were the daft one. Have you really thought this one through? The economy's in the toilet right now, and people (much to everyone's chagrin) ain't gonna spend $2K plus on a computer. Get over it.

If we want to add the 13.3 MBP which I personally don't think will happen,
the pricing would look like this
2 13.3" MB (starting at $799)
2 15.4" MB (starting at $999)
1 13.3" MBP(starting at $1499)
2 15.4" MBP (starting at $1699)
2 17.1" MBP (starting at $2299)
2 13.3" MBA (starting at $1499)

heres my mock up with the black MBA keys, i think i like the looks of it.

Photoshopped using the spy pictures and fixed with distort and whatnot
MockUp.jpg

what do you think?

FEW YEARS!!!!!!!!
What people has Apple been marketing the FireWire to "over the last few years"? They have been pushing for the consumer market for years, while there has been few, if any, advertising towards creative pros.
So, I see the MacBook Air being the most expensive MacBook
I don't. I mean... the MBA offers less performance and features than the MacBook. Not even Apple could justify almost double the latter's (rumored) price.

I'm going with battery connector.

I've done a bit of research.

The iBook G4 had 6 battery prongs on the terminal and 6 cells in the battery (see images). The current MacBook has 6 prongs on the battery terminal, can't find how many cells in the battery but an educated guess would be 6.

So each cell must provide half the voltage and 2 connected in series require 2 prongs.

Stick with me here!

Now, in that image on the new MacBook, if it is a battery terminal (and I'm 90% sure it is, it's in the right location, attached to the frame/chassis like it is on the current MacBook and old iBooks) it has 8 prongs, so that would mean the battery would have 8 cells.

Someone who knows more about battery cells might be able to illustrate what smaller cells are available and the likely power it would provide!

that'd be such a mistake to leave out firewire. sometimes usb 2.0 is just not fast enough

The battery connector is not connected to the Frame/chassis, it's connected to the motherboard...the motherboard sticks through the frame and makes it look that way. I've taken apart a few laptops and I've never seen the battery connector on the frame and not on the motherboard, it just doesn't make sense. There would have to be an extra lead going from the frame to the motherboard to power everything. Why have a middleman that could short out or something?
