Couldn't these pics be from pre-production models. So people make be getting hot and bothered over something they won't ever see. I guess we'll find out if the macbook has a firewire port in less that 48 hours. My guess it will have a firewire port so I'm not too worried.

I'm guessing that these pictures are of the to-be-shipped models. It's not insane to think that Apple might drop ports to separate the pro line from the consumer line.

the real deal

ok guys, so here is what i'm thinkin...

everyone is thinking that these new mbp's battery is going to take up the entire back/rear of the bottom of the computer...everyone has made these assumptions from these leaked mbp photos back in july:

https://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/09/leaked-macbook-pro-casing-confirmed/

But what if we got it wrong? What if the batter is at the front of the computor, not the back. That would explain what that mystery hole is, if it is indeed a hole.

Chew on that...

hell yea

I would agree, except that FireWire is not just a pro requirement. Even Apple realise that, as it was used on many iPod models, is essential for hooking up most DV cameras for use with iMovie (a home user product) and is used for Apples much acclaimed disk mode feature!

You could also argue that it's the best way to hook up an external Hard Disk Drive. In sustained read/writes it can be up to 40% faster and navigation times are a multitude better! FireWire also provides higher current to power devices and last but not least, has a hardware controller easing load on the CPU.

So yes, it would be a huge mistake for Apple to drop FireWire on a consumer model.

I don't think they will, I think these cases are prototypes or decoys and the final design will be very similar but slightly better :)

*Removed bold due to annoyance

How would that explain anything? The battery on my 12" PB is on the front and the charging connector is on the back where Magsafe is in the photos.

Whew.

I read it. ALL.

Thanks for the diversion today guys!

Personally, i'd LOVE it to be the dock port..... and i had another thought like 20 pages ago but can't remember what i wanted to say!

your right

- Whatever the tape is covering up, it's orange coloured. That would be a strange colour for a port hole!

- The orange shape is protruding away from the aluminium. All the other port holes are flush!

- If you squint, you can almost make out black/dark marks on the orange shape. I wont class this point as evidence because it's touch and go!

- It's a silly place for a port!

- It's not a video out, because that's elsewhere.

- It's not a 'dock' port, because that's a silly idea all round! (I'll eat not only my hat, but my socks and undercrackers if I'm wrong!)

So - It is NOT a port! It's just a sticker or barcode covered up intentionally by tape!

DUDE!!! You are totally right!! If you look at all the other photos of the inside of the computer, there is no freakin hole there!!!

Nope there isn't. I can only see another little bit of loose tape on one other shot.

So can we all finally put this 'tape covered hole' thing to bed now? It's a label that's been covered up.

with all this talk off mac book updates and the fact that they are having an event do u think that they will also be updating (if anything else) new lcds (328 days past avg. update), mac pros (62 days past avg. update), and mac minis (245 days past avg. update)

I would say so. Looks like a covered up barcode/label to me.

Look a couple posts above yours, you can see the cutout from the inside of the bottom side of the case.

anyone else think the Alu surfaces are quite, uh.. glossy?

Also, whats with everyone's obsession with firewire? Are there lots of professional's equipment that runs on firewire? In the consumer market, most products are USB with firewire as an option of you pay a premium.
Please don't flame me, i'm just asking because I wanted to know why people are holding onto firewire as if their life depended on it.

no the IR sensor is right next to it

There´s a hole next to the hole in question? Dunno, I think the hole is for an eject button for something going into the port covered by tape. The IR will be on the front, facing the direction of where the remote is likely to be operated. Didn´t see any pictures of the front, so I may be wrong of course.

Oh man I just spent half of my day reading this thread...

I did a search for mini-displayport and came up with a PDF from a Chinese company about their operation for 2008.

On page 43 they mention that from January to March this year they did the following:
1/1/2008 ~ 3/31/2008
1.Batch production for Sony HDMI Cable 3M.
2.Development to Apple’s mouse cable and keyboard cable.
3.Development to Apple’s Mini Displayport.
4.Development to Displayport products.
5.Development to halogen-free signal cable.

As nice as they were to print this information, they don't provide a photo of the port.

PDF link

Searching for "mini-display port" only returns a few results on google (including two pages from this thread). Aside from the PDF you found, there's another interesting result from a chinese factory related forum:

Posted September 25 2008:
Apple heard that own a mini displayport norms, as the same mini DVI.
And they will be open, not royalty,
Who do not have the information or data?
About sharing.
I put all my gold to him.

Well I think that there's a few errors in the translation, here's what I think it would mean:

"I heard that Apple created and owns a mini-displayport standard, much like the mini-DVI standard, and that they will open the specification to others, with no royalty fees.

Does anyone have information about it?
I would pay them $$$."

because the cameras people already have are firewire and they dont want to by a cheaper usb model

I noticed the same. I wonder though, on my current MacBook the second-lowest row of keys, the one with the Shift buttons, has 11 standard-sized keys, while the new MB and MBP only have 10 of them - so I wonder which key is missing. I supposed it's the left one, the one with the two arrows < and > - but where did it go?

What are you talking about? There not moving keys around for fun...
