I don't even think this is likely at all and I almost don't know why I'm bothering to post this, but could the taped port be eSATA?

...or maybe a proprietary port that would allow control of the laptop from another Mac (plugged in on the other end). Display, keyboard, mouse-- Now I'm just getting crazy.

I am feeling less and less confident that this is legit. Why would they get rid of the rounded expresscard slot? There's no advantage in doing that.

Having never owned a lappy with an expresscard slot, can you tell me why rounded makes sense?

$10,000 says that isn't a port.

okay, its only been two minutes, but in thinking about it more this really makes NO sense.

MacBook Pro

PRO! PRO! Pro as in Professional, as in professonal photographer's who use firewire for all sorts of things. Pro as in professional musician who has all his equipment linked up with a firewire interface. Pro as in professional ANYONE who uses external drives at their maximum speed using firewire.

this is not right.

my guess:

Smaller apple notebook, netbook or sub notebook 10-13" potentially. Black plastic and alum two tone. This is the 800 dollar laptop.

Macbook- 13" and 15" (thats what we're seeing here)

Macbook Pro- 15" and 17" (we havent seen this yet)

think about this-
the $800 one comes in two SKUs- one base, one higher end.
the Macbook comes in 5 SKU's- 3 for the 13(same as now), 2 for the 15.
The MBP coms in 3 SKU's - 2 for the 15, 1 for the 17 (same as now)
and the Macbook Air comes in 2 SKU's- SSD and non SSD (same. as. now.)

two, plus five, plus three, plus two (at least by my counting) adds up to twelve SKU's.

please, please, please for the love of god let me be right.

Yea this makes the most sense out of anything. Apple is one of the smartest companies in our generation, they have a plan for everything.

lol I think everyone thinks that which is why some are saying the "Pro" is actually a bigger MB

Oh S*** I hope not. Thats not very apple like. I think all the MB class will look the same,as well as the pros.

eSATA was suggested earlier in this thread. It's my favorite suggestion, only because I'd love to have it on my next laptop.

I agree. I'm almost afraid to say I think it's fake because they are obviously real pictures of a real object, but I just don't like it. Hah. There's too many little things that just don't seem right.

Unless of course these were prototype cases.

wow i cant believe it about 1 more day not counting the night im gonna be so excited to come home and view the event, i hate when apple posts the new stuff on the front page before i see the video it ruins the event, who hates that raise your hand.

Why prototype a port contrary to your innovation? If Apple likes the rounded slot, they have no reason to prototype it rectangular.

i dont think it will include any plastic casing. on apples website it states they are removing plastic from computers by the end of the year.

It says they're removing poly-vinyl-chloride... a polymer, not a plastic. The macbook shell is made out of a thermoplast family known as polycarbonates.

I usually just read a few live feeds so it's like seeing the event. Plus, I'll be going to my local Apple store to try to buy one as soon as the event ends.

See, I think it'd be great to have an eSATA port on a MacBook Pro, but I just don't think that that thing is a Pro which means I doubt that it's eSATA. Also, eSATA just doesn't seem like something Apple would do. They've got other things to work out before thinking about putting eSATA in notebook (i.e. HOW ABOUT A FLIPPIN' REAL DVI PORT! or an extra USB for goodness' sake).

I don't know, maybe they were just working on port placement and case shape for this particular one. If I knew I was never going to make it into a functioning laptop, I'd just pop a rectangle in it just so you can see where it'd go. Why go for precision on something that won't get used? Again, I don't know. I'm not saying it makes too much sense, I'm just trying to think of a possible reason. (Mostly because I think the square one looks really ugly in comparison and I'd rather have it round. And I'm planning on getting one so I care a little bit, heh).

It doesn't make sense, but it also doesn't _not_ make sense. Apple typically only does something when it needs to happen, or when it could be made better. By going from rounded to rectangular, it changes the aesthetics of the outside of the case, making it less attractive, and we all know Apple is about sexiness.

Also, the "laser cut" speaker grill holes are in perfect alignment instead of being alternated like they are on current macbook pros. Also, the holes don't extend all the way to the sides or all the way up and down next to the keyboard, and that just looks dumb

Whoa I just noticed something else... in one of the pictures, if you zoom in on the label, it clearly says "ANSI" and they definitely edited something else out of that picture. I'd be interested to see what it says.

It's probably like that so they can have the round air look, and they need all the room there for ports, and they crammed up right up to the top.

Maybe it's something that could ID the leak, so they edited out. This is my thinking on the 'mystery' port (which is most likely a sticker) as well.

I noticed all that stuff too (except the ANSI and edited part). I agree, the speakers look kinda dumb, and the rectangular ExpressCard looks worse too. If it's real, it BETTER not be the Pro. Hah.
