I hope they have an adaptor, or a hidden firewire ability in the new macbooks - its an incredibly useful thing to have. I've used it a lot for target disc mode.
There would still be some hope ;)

They could provide connections via ethernet (not FW800 over RJ45 connectors but over ethernet), which could be as fast as or even faster than current FW400. As far as I know, at least FW400 speeds have been reached over gigabit ethernet with some NAS. In a real-life scenario. Even a target disk mode should be possible, if implemented in firmware. It all depends on software implementation though. But seeing they found a way around FW for the MBA...

OK... Number One: We have NO confirmation that these photos are legitimate. They look very cool, but could easily be prototypes, very recent ones that give us a very good look at the design of the new laptops.

Hopefully Apple will not take Firewire away from the MB altogether. If they use a FW/Ethernet port or even develop an ethernet adaptor that works out of a firewire port (faster speeds), Firewire is too useful and so much of Apples software depends on the ability to get stuff in via video camera etc (which use Firewire). Perhaps Ethernet will come standard, and there will be an optional upgrade to the firewire/ethernet port...

As for the case design, the MacBook will definitely have a metal lid. The Airport manual thing (see the MacRumors homepage) is for both the MB and MBP. If the MB had plastic, then there would be no need for the Airport to go in the hinge...

Also - no mention of MBA in this manual, I am almost certain the MBA design isn't changing yet...

We will have to wait and see - hopefully Apple will wow us on Tuesday with a bunch of great new features, such as a docking system, ethernet/firewire integration, great new designs, battery life, smaller things like that rather than a massive update with 20,000x Superdrives and wireless charging and holographic projection screens etc.

You're only the 44345th person to say the exact same thing. lol

tapered edges, ugh. I like the shape of the current mbp, more rectangular.

Anxiously awaiting the final design with everything on it.
I'm a bit afraid they made it even thinner, it can only mean: less powerful than it could have been or even hotter.

I agree. I would prefer the most powerful notebook that I can get, even if it weighs a couple pounds more, or is slightly larger. If someone wants or need portability, they can choose the MBA. As for the people complaining about not having tapered edges... I say, who cares. Buy a MBA and leave the rest of us alone. I'm glad they kept the squared edges... it looks more robust.

4:10, from what we can tell, the width and depth of the casings are relatively the same as the current models which are 4:10.

4:10? What are you talking about? The current models are 16:10. 4:10 would be the craziest display ever, haha. Just imagine that.

Just because you didn't find a mention of Firewire on these sites doesn't mean that they don't have it. Amazon doesn't search the specs (only the product name).
Oh, they do list specs on some products.
But anyway... that's why I looked up specs at manufacturer's sites.
Maybe you didn't know, but most camcorder makers don't call the port "Firewire" but rather IEEE-1394 or in the case of Sony, i-Link.
Oh.... I can see why you're pointing this out.
But I really knew this (1394b being FW800, just for the record).
On the Canon site you linked, the HV20 and HV30 both have Firewire as their only connectivity port
OK, you got me.
But these DV cameras aren't the stylish, small and "cool" new ones to entice consumers, I suppose?
I mean... nowadays cameras recording on some flash device are the hot stuff, right?
This is also somewhat indicated by the fact that Canon only have 3 miniDV models at the bottom of the page.
So this seems to be yesterday's tech (for the consumer market!).
The Sony HDR-SR12 you mentioned does have Firewire
Well... how come Sony don't say so?
On the specs page it clearly says:

USB Port(s) : Hi-speed (2.0 compliant)
Digital Audio/Video Output(s) : Yes (via USB)
i.LINK® Interface : N/A

and again, all of their mini-dv
At least one of them supports USB streaming.
(And yes, I know about their compatibility issues and them being non-standard as I have experienced this first-hand, the only time I tried some video cutting on my Mac).
the problem is that some people have invested in Firewire gears and still use those.
Sure.
That's a very valid point ...for becoming a problem for some users.
But not for Apple to keep FireWire.

I don't think they give much about that.
Cause the fancy new cameras work with USB.
The point is that you can get new cameras which work without FW.
And even if you're new to all this, you're more and more likely to get a camera without FW.
Seems like that's what companies want to sell to you, while FW gets phased out on these cams.
And Apple itself is notorious for ceasing support for older tech.

(Don't get me wrong. Personally I'm all for Apple to keep the FW ports on the MacBook. Just don't think that's what Apple has in mind)

^ i can guarantee from just your one post there that you are going to be disappointed come Tuesday… this is always the case for some users and happens every year (not that its bad or anything ;))

I know that there is only a day or so left till the announcement, but with all the photos of the case why has there not been any statements about any specs?

Apple is very secretive about everything and will only release specs of new Macs on the release day at an event or on their website (usually a Tuesday :p).

these pics are only leaks of the cases probably from someone who had access to the factory. no leaks of the specs have emerged.

You are obviously new to Apple right? No one knows the specs other than the Apple inner sanctum. It's the Apple way... they like to do major unveiling at media events. The case photos are leaked and not sanctioned by Apple. That being said, it's fairly easy to figure out what the specs might be based on what current technology if available.

Has anyone noticed all the small parts already assembled on the underside. Notice especially the long rectangular bars near the hinge. There seem to be some more very small ones near the long reinforcement bar at the base of the keyboard. Hmmmmm... very interesting and elegant machine work.

Or magnets to keep the bottom plate on? If they were reinforcing the case, I would think that they would just leave that part thicker when forming the aluminum shell instead of hollowing it out first and adding more metal afterwards.

Also, for those people who think these notebooks won't be tapered, I think they will be. Look at the laptop's edges: there's a noticeable ridge around the perimeter of the top case. Look at the attached images of the Air and you will see the same design. The bottom plate is what gives the laptop its tapered edges.

I got the images from ifixit btw.

Don't worry, Apple's photography should surely do them more justice. :p

I swear, apple's propaganda machine is MASSIVE. Its amazing what they can do with a few numbers and some perfectly sculpted machines :D.

On topic: I've only used firewire once for my dads old DV camera. And i could have used USB. Also, I have a USB HDD and i only need one USB port to power and run it. But i definitely don't want them to eliminate firewire just for people like me.

I think the best to do guys is to wait tomorrow:cool:,
it's very strange to think about the fact that Apple didnt build any firewire on his MB ! This pictures could be fake ... Let just see tomorrow. It ll be fun ! :D
