Wow, somebody is grossly misinformed. Witness the Dell UltraSharp U2711 :
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&sku=224-8284&redirect=1
Same panel as the Apple iMac 27" (so the same panel as the Cinema Display), but way more options, and better yet, Factory color calibration, 3 year warranty and 110% color gamut (CIE1976 - 110% and CIE1931 - 102%).
Oh and what's this : "Zero Bright Pixels: Under Dell's Premium Panel Guarantee, you will receive a free panel exchange should even one bright defective pixel appear on the screen during your Limited Hardware Warranty3 period. "
A bit more Pro than Apple right there... But don't let reality get in the way of your uninformed rant. Your siblings here will appreciate your dedication to the cause.
Dell have been selling the same monitors that Apple does under their UltraSharp line which is a line as pro if not more than Apple offers. And hey, at least their cables are long enough. I hope Apple learned a thing or two about cable length with the 24" and actually give you some flexibility in how to position stuff on your desk with the 27".
^Yes the same displays are used in the core of the monitor's (http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/news_archive/18.htm) but for the same price (999$) you also get:
1) an aluminum unibody (stronger and dust proof),
2) LED backlight (lower energy and heat = longer life)
3) 3 speakers (so you don't buy them),
4) a camera and mic (so you don't buy dangling peripherals),
5) an ambient light sensor (so you don't have to bother),
6) the ability to power your laptop (less clutter and weight in your bag),
7) Apple customer care (go ahead, call Dell and see).
With Dell you get a cheap plastic case, crappy customer service and more ports. Well, you also gain about 6ms of grey to grey response ratio for all you avid gamers out there
It may not be top-of-the-line pro but it is still a good deal for what you get.
