After a 16 hour day, AOD usually accounts for around 6% of battery usage on my Android.

Black screen + time (with new customizable font) and widgets?
100% this. As soon as we saw the new Lock Screen widgets were monotone and very minimal, it just had to be ripe for an always-on. :D

I further wonder if the Live Activities section is held back as Apple could allow the "always on" version of a widget. Let developers build out a stripped-down, monotone version of those Live Activities. Imagine "now playing" but reduced down to just a music icon and the song artist and title etc.

EDIT: I hadn't read the forum replies yet and see @ipedro said exactly the same. I'm in complete agreement with his post.

I hated always on when I had it on my Samsung, it‘s stupid, annoying and wastes battery.
All the more reason for apple to take their customary approach of only implementing a feature when they’ve figured out how to do it well rather than simply how do it the soonest.

Anyone paying attention to WWDC yesterday should have seen this coming, they literally spent like 10 minutes on the Lock Screen features more than anything, fonts, clocks, profiles, common, you know it’s coming for The next iphome.

Pretty sure it will be the same way with a new ipad pro or something Watch.

I wonder if they will make a case with a window to reveal this always-on section of display.
Similar to the current leather sleeve?

Personally, I’d welcome this feature. And if I don’t want to use it at times, it can always be disabled. It’s good to have options.

It became clear once the new Lock Screen was unveiled. The customizable date, time and widgets are designed in line art, the more energy efficient type of drawing.

It's possible that notifications and Live Events will contain a line art version in the API so that developers can display sports scores at the bottom of the screen and update them as the event progresses or Uber can show an always on version of their Live Events widget, with the car status and license plate.

The lit up items will most likely be dimmer than the lead image of this article shows. It's probably going to look more like this:View attachment 2015444
Yeah that makes perfect sense. I was thinking the exact same thing.

...

An always-on display has been rumored since always-on technology came to the Apple Watch, and it is a highly desired feature. It would let users see the time and other key iPhone information without needing to activate the screen.
Er, it's been around on Nokia phones for over a decade. Apple may have improved it for the Apple Watch, but lets not pretend that this is something that Apple invented.

I don’t understand why people are complaining about the iPhone gaining an optional feature. I’d surely use it. I love having it on my Note 20. No issues whatsoever aside from very slight battery impact.

My guess it will light up slightly when you get notification. Looking forward to AOD coming

Yeah, that’s what I’m hoping.

Well... I'm sure you can just "Turn off" the feature. Another easy fix :)
Exactly. Apple says AOD does not affect battery life on Watch S5 or later. But yeah, it very, VERY clearly does. Just turn it off.

Except on phone it might actually be useful, and just like Android phones with this feature it will use the proximity sensor to turn off when in pocket anyway. Not sure why people would assume it wouldn’t.

It would make sense to add now that we can have widgets on the lock screen.
Apple Watch users have known the benefits of getting information at a glance for years now. I expected Apple to do something like this 5 years ago. Better late than never, I guess.
