You might want to look up Retina Display, Retina HD Display, Retina 4K Display and Retina 5K Display. PPI has NOT stayed the same. It's ranged from 218 to 401ppi.
I thought you were referring to only iPhone, the iPhone 5 had a resolution bump but only to keep the ppi the same as the 4 because it has a larger screen, the 6 had a resolution increase because the screen got bigger and it kept the same ppi again as the 4 and 5. The 6+ dose have a higher ppi tho.
Pretty sure you mean aspect ratio, or something similar. PPI is pixels per inch, or how dense the display is (how clear).
Yea I know, look above for a better idea of what I meant.
Um, it is supposed to be the size of the smaller iPhone but with a larger screen even when you don't count the functional area, so I am not exactly sure what you mean.
I wasn't referring to the 8 but to the past.

Remember when 800x600 on a 17" desktop display was considered luxurious and beautiful? I can only imagine where we will be in about 20 years.

I think that monitor was 1024x768... maybe the 15" was 800x600.

Yes. Because we need more pixels in a handheld device. /s
for VR yes... you do need more.

If you're into VR then you should probably look into a real VR device for now, rather than a phone. All current phones are poor for VR, even the higher resolution ones. I don't think we should all foot the bill (both financially and through burden it places on hardware) for ridiculous resolutions that a tiny minority may find fun for a few minutes.

375 x 812 points (about 19.5:9) is very close to the shape of recent renders that incorporated the leaked alleged faceplate. Just slightly taller in shape than those renders. (And the camera "dip" would cut into the 812.)

If the faceplate/screen protector is a real leak (who knows) then I'd say 375 x 812 is the ENTIRE screen—no additional "function areas" or anything like that. (In which case, I can see apps being offered the option of a smaller size--maybe the source of the 5.15/5.2" rumors?--that slices of the top and bottom so the camera/speaker "dip" and the round corners can be ignored. But still taller than 16:9.)

Which in turn means, IF the leaked part is real, AND these server stats aren't pranks or something else, then Ming-Chi Kuo would be half right (resolution) and half wrong (function area vs. "useable area").

Which ultimately means we still know nothing! Good fun.

(As for 3x retina, no I don't think we need it. But Apple's chips are fast and efficient, and I think it's been clear that's where they were headed. If/when it happens, it will be fine.)

P.S. If that point size is real, I expect Apple would want that 375-point width to physically be identical to the iPhone 7 screen width (so, larger than the article speculates).

In that case, the diagonal size of the new screen would almost exactly the same 5.5" as the Plus—but that diagonal would be across a tall-and-narrow shape (and with corners trimmed off) off. So, still less area than my beloved Plus. I'd still consider it as a possibly OK compromise for pocketability, halfway between the 4.7 and the 5.5". (Cropping off the rounded top and bottom leaves about 5" diagonally of pure rectangular screen area.) The rumored camera/speaker "dip" wouldn't bother me—that part of the screen just wouldn't be used all the time, but would cosmetically look nice when it was.

Most interesting is that that's the resolution the Plus's render to, and then downscale to 1080p displays. This would remove all the downscaling magic iOS does, so may actually help performance and reduce GPU load despite the higher res.
