Surprising to me that Germany is more an iOS country. I would not have thought that.

Germans have high standards.

Blah blah blah, useless blabber again.

To you probably. He used big words, but I could understand him.

But what about those darned South Koreans and Swedes? Maybe we should go for the North Koreans? I mean Android! Surely!

Yeah, North Korea must be a heck of a place. I mean, one guy dies and it's all over the news.

Regarding the graph that showed iOS sales by markets: I was surprised that the iPod Touch did so well compared to the iPad. I would have expected the iPad to be much higher numbers compared to the iPod Touch.

Perhaps the iPad Touch makes a much easier gift to afford and therefore gets a bigger boost from the holiday sales. If this is the case, then it really is Apple's ace in the hole as a gateway device to future iPad sales.

It's always the same thing over and over again, there will be a post stating Android has good sale numbers.

One person will come out to say sales number don't matter/are lies because:

1. the sales are fragmented (They love using that word)
2. Android manufacturers make less profit
3. Consumers are more satisfied with Apple

Then when one person says it does not matter because both are doing amazing, the fore mentioned reasons are irrelevant to the subject, he will be called an Apple-hating Android fanboy even if he never bashed Apple.

(All these based on past similar threads)
my friends who all own Apple stuff consider me considered to be an Apple-hating Android fanboy because I bought HTC Flyer instead of buying an iPad, even though when they tried it they thought it was very cool and fun to use. But whatever people aren't happy just using/discussing the technology and enjoying it. Every tech discussion turns into a MAC vs PC type debate. Why can't technology products be reviewed on their own merits why does it have to be an Apple Comparison. Why do tech discussions have to be arguments. The mentality that it is either Apple or everyone else is a stupid mentality because it isn't just that black and white. These days ever discussion divolves into one about why Apple products or more polished or have better ecosystem. Also the mentality that only Apple can satisfy the "average user" is stupid or "or the average user doesn't" is stupid because the majority of people who are trying to determine what the average user is is usually a person who is a wannabe geek who doesn't understand what people want and doesn't understand that their is many kinds of technologies for many kinds of needs.

.

More expensive products usually sell in lower volumes, and the iPad is a lot more expensive. But these still looks like surprising good numbers for the iPod Touch, given that the iPod Touch is around the same price point as the larger Kindle Fire and B&N Nook.

This just in, people buy electronic devices and give as gifts during the holiday season. Those items must be activated.... that is all.

Activations do not equate to sales.
At the end of the day, the majority of the Android devices are not making a fraction of the net profit that the iOS devices are.
Apple over charges for their products..... So if what you say is true (sounds like your talking out your butt without any real knowledge) THAT might be the reason.

My daughter bought me a new iPad2 32gig and I activated it Christmas day, so I guess I'm part of that. Oh, and I gave my wife my old iPod Classic 80 to replace the Creative Zen Sleek Photo she was using. We're both happy as clams.

Stop the presses!! People give others gifts during christmas!!!!

Yeah, there are also A, B, C to X selling at 199 - as if that was the relevant factor here. Few, looking to buy a "kindle" would buy an iPod. Few looking to buy an "iPod" would buy a Kindle (or Nook).

Im sorry to say, but you really need to learn how to read graphs. Really, really, really. Really.

----------

It's amazing that there is still such massive growth, considering how popular these devices already are. It seems like there's no end in sight.

Whats more amazing is your ability to read growth from one point in a chart. Magical.

i think this just shows that people are spending money right now, even though the economy isn't very good. hopefully the economy will turn around soon.

but this is good for both iOS and android. hopefully iOS will continue to be a huge player in this market

This is simply manipulation of statistics.

Does it take into account the fact that there will be a decrease in activations during December 1-20 as compared to your "average" 3 week period because of people holding off until Christmas? I would suspect you would see the same decrease in activations before a product release. Sounds like this would skew the numbers…

Well said.

What should be done, is an average number of sales throughout the months of the year, with a standard deviation, which can be compared directly to the "holiday" period weighted average.

So who in the world buys a product between Dec 1 and 20 AND OPENS AND USES IT BEFORE CHRISTMAS?! Pretty much only non-Christians.
Why? Are you of the opinion that Christmas has something to do with Christ? Thought we paid attention to facts here.

I'd say the high number of activations is because there's nothing to do on Christmas besides go to movies, might as well play with electronics.

If you want to talk about fragmentation of the graph, let's discuss how it's fair to compare Android devices, which for the most part are contract cell phones, to iPod touch sales. If you remove the iPod touch from the graph, Android and iPhone/iPad growth are relatively similar.

EDIT: If you remove the iPod touch, the growth rate for the iPhone/iPad is just over 12x, as opposed to Android's mid-11x level (based on US numbers). Not that I am assuming ALL Android sales are on contract, but compared to the iPod touch, it's unfair.

This thank you. I hate that these charts include ipod/ipad numbers with iPhones. It should be iPhone vs Android phones and iPad + iPod vs Android Tablets/other.

Kindle Fire is not an Android product

Any source to back this claim?

The Kindle Fire is indeed an Android product. What OS does it use? Android.

It's a perfect example of the fragmentation of the Android OS which is has been forked so often that it's causing headaches for developers.

You can repeat a thousand times, it won't be true. The Kindle Fire and Nook tablet are NOT Android products

It's a perfect example of why people at Apple forums talk about the "terrible Android fragmentation", because they don't really know what it means and it only serve to bash Android.

No, I'm not talking out of my butt.

It makes me laugh when I hear people say that Apple overcharges for their products.

It's only overcharging if people don't buy it. And we do.

If they did, then why would people be buying them. They couldn't keep the iPhone 4Gs in stock in most Apple Stores over the holidays. And is not an assumption, but fact.

And the iPad is the only player in the corporate world these days. My company last year gave all 600 sale reps 3G iPads, so that they can easily and quickly jump in and out of Salesforce.

I personally stopped traveling with my laptop last year (I'm on the road three weeks a month) and only travel with my iPad and Apple keyboard. Just the fact that I don't have to remove the iPad from my luggage when I go through security is reason enough not to travel with a Laptop ever again!

Can't wait for this year's iPad.

Why do you feel that the Nook and the Kindle are not Android products?

I defined the device based on the OS it's running. A device running Linux is a Linux machine. A device running iOS is an iOS device. A device running Android is an Android device (regardless of a shell running on top of it, if the shell that a mfg redefines the device then a lot of the Android Devices would need to be called something else).

What OS does the Nook Tablet, Nook Color and Kindle Fire use?

If there is a severe security hole in their OS or a bug, who would patch it?

And trust me I know and understand what fragmentation is. I deal with it everyday.

This must be a trick question. But since the Android user environment runs on top of a Linux OS kernel, they are all Linux systems. But nobody except geeks care about the actual OS, so this strange fact doesn't really matter to real people. Only the main marketing story matters to them.

No one said a Nook was an Android-based product. However, if you owned a Fire and you wanted some apps, why would only Android apps run on it?

It's a perfect example of why people at Apple forums talk about the "terrible Android fragmentation", because they don't really know what it means and it only serve to bash Android.

It's more of an example of Android fragmentation that some people don't even realize that a Fire is part of the mess.

Someone in this thread mentioned that it's not so hard to write for the fragmented Android market because you just write for the lowest common denominator - like one size fits all. That's gotta really suck, unless you're running the oldest OS version with the smallest screen out there.

Reminds me of all the DOS games that were still out there long after MS went to windows.

Why do you feel that the Nook and the Kindle are not Android products?

An Android product has to pass the OHA Device Compatibility Test to be certified as Android product and use the Android trademark.

Kindle Fire and Nook doesn't have passed and won't pass those test so they are not Android products

I defined the device based on the OS it's running. A device running Linux is a Linux machine.

So, a Google Galaxy Nexus is a Linux machine?

If there is a severe security hole in their OS or a bug, who would patch it?

Amazon and B&N, not Google

And trust me I know and understand what fragmentation is. I deal with it everyday.

What have you deal? Any example?

Is hard to trust when you put the Kindle Fire as an example

Germany has eight Applestores. Sweden has none. Maybe this makes a difference. The UK has 34 and those are always full in the run up to Xmas.
