$50 is easily a good deal about half the time. For kid's movies, I can save on tickets, which for me is usually four. Sometimes the kids want a friend and their cheap parents "forget" to give their own damn kid money for a ticket (but that's a different story). So after popcorn, soda and extra crap I'm usually in for around $50.

Now subtract 3 screaming kids in a minivan, the pain of bathroom breaks, line-ups, general stress, my ability to provide better quality and cheaper snacks to the kids while they watch a movie and I can still read a book. This is a win.

I would definitely pay $10-12/month for unlimited movies from ITunes, I would also buy an AppleTV in that case. $50/movie isn't going to fly for my use case though, my wife isn't much of a movie fan and my son is currently too young to pay any attention to movies.

<chuckle> I remember being equally deluded when I was a newish parent. Reality check: they stay "too young to XXX" for a blink of an eye.

I would buy a movie for $50, considering that's what it costs (for tickets only) to take my family out to a movie, then I usually spend $20 later when it is released on iTunes, so I consider it saving myself $20 ;)

If you have a true home theatre setup where you’ve already spent lots of money then $50 is worth it to avoid the hassle of going to a cinema with all its downfalls. Yeah, you could wait and probably will buy it in UHD eventually if it was good enough for repeat viewing (or you hoard movies). But what’s $50 worth to you anyway? For my homeless cousin it’s 2 rocks of crack; I can easily spend $50 on lunch for just me; it’s a couple drinks with tip at a good bar; for some it’s food for a week...

I’ve observed that most people that torrent can actually afford buying but they won’t on principle or some crap excuse. With principles like that why not dine & dash and shoplift too?

Haha! Well that's dead in the water. $50 and $30 dollars! What a joke.

Absolutely.

Now where can I go camp out for the privilege of paying $1000 for a smart phone or $2500 for a laptop?

I think if I'm these studios and I want to sell to this particular crowd, I work out a co-branding deal with Apple so these can be spun as Apple movies. Then, $50 & $30 will be viewed as magical (bargains). In fact, we'll work hard to shout down anyone who faults those prices once we perceive these as an Apple product.

Ideally, they can be significantly edited down to make them "thinner" movies because we all know that thinner is more important than substance and/or customer utility.

And next year, repackage the same movie with maybe 2 or 3 noticeable (but relatively minor) changes and sell it again at $50 or $30. Repeat the following year. Repeat the following year. Etc.

;)

Tell me a movie that's out right now worth $50 for an itunes digital copy and I'll buy you a drink.

Some of you are completely missing the point and cost savings. If it's not for you, it's not for you. Obviously, if you're seeing this from a single viewer / after-theater rental perspective, yeah, it's going to be a bad deal.

This is a very good deal if:

- You usually go to the theater with multiple friends, or your family.
- You usually buy food and beverages at the theater, on top of ticket prices.
- You value the comfort of your own living room and the convenience of being at home.
- You have a high end entertainment system.

No way, these film companies are stuck in the 1900s. I'm the ONLY person that I know who PAYS to rent a film (from iTunes). I think that £4.49 is already way too high and usually wait for the £1.99 or 99p deals.
Truly insane to think that anyone would pay 30 or 50dollars for a film rental. Insane in 2017!

You're kind of missing the point as the cinema is an 'experience' 'going out' leaving the house. Watching a film stuck in your house is not really a memorable experience. Going somewhere with friends, travelling, a restaurant meal etc but watching something at home on a home cinema? A bit sad really!

What's a "reasonable price", though? A "reasonable price" from the rights holders' standpoint would be at least $250-300 /month. That's nearly every entertainment TV show, including premium channels, plus nearly every film in print more than a few months old. It would offer you much more than a "loaded" cable subscription.

Netflix manage it for £7/month, Amazon manage it for £6.58/month, Spotify is £10 - so for a complete sub inc movies, TV shows and Music including all new releases I'd say £30-35 is reasonable.

I like to host and cook for friends and family, and I have a nice place. It's actually a good time, in a nice intimate setting.

You should try it sometime.;)

ITT:
  • Single people who are outraged at $30-50 for a movie
  • People in relationships or with kids who think $30-50 for a movie is reasonable
I was going to say this.

This service isn't for lonely guy sitting alone watching on his laptop. Unless you want Apple to start tracking how many people are watching the screen and charging accordingly. (I'm sure Google and Samsung are ready to roll that out any day now.)

It's a fantastic idea and a great price.

I have a 4K projector and Atmos setup at home, makes perfect sense to pay this for a decent movie.

To be honest, apart from scale, a well set up home system , with good quality equipment outperforms the average public theatre almost every time.

Went to the movies with someone, bought soda, popcorn, and pretzels bites with nacho cheese. $40.

So yeah, $50 would be worth it, but it's gotta be day and date, not a few weeks after for $50.

I don't see this being something that you (or and least I) would do every week, or every couple of weeks. But it would be cool if you got some friends together, or neighbors together and watched one. Heck, projectors are getting so cheap, you could put a big screen in your back yard and have a semi-drive in setting.

Having the option would be nice though, especially for those who have a lot of money invested in a movie room or "man cave".

I keep reading posts about $14-18 movie tickets. Where do you guys live, and why are you paying such ridiculous prices?

I think I paid $12 for an IMAX ticket, and maybe $14 for IMAX 3D. If they tried charging more than $10-11 for a regular, non-matinee ticket around here, the theater would be out of business.

Man, that $10/mo Moviepass subscription look so much sweeter now.

I'd guess the percentage of people who are "lonely guy sitting alone on his laptop" is quite high on this forum. ;)

If this really takes off I can see my local cinema doubling the current ticket price as the fall off in revenue from week 3 will "force" their hand.

Also $50! Not a chance.

You think cinemas make money through their tickets? Not a chance.

Their revenue comes from the insanely expensive pop corn and drinks they sell.

Look up how cheap it is to produce vs. the price they sell then at.
