I just spoke with an AT&T employee at the store in Carmel, IN at Greyhound pass. He told me that I can still buy today, I just have to pay the $399 or $499 price for the 8 GB and 16 GB phones respectively. He said nothing about having to wait until tomorrow. I think I am good to go. I just sounds like some stores in particular are screwing customers over, though I have no idea why.

Yeah, I understand that my situation is fairly unique (anyone else out there with the same 'in the notes' eligibility?), but the fact is, the guy told me to just leave, that they wouldn't even sell me anything.

Dang man! That really sucks! Were they rude to you when they kicked ya out of line? Happy Birthday

They weren't too rude to me, but clearly they just don't want to deal with anyone out of the ordinary today. Maybe they get less sales commission on existing customers.

I have the same problem with the 'in the notes' eligibility. I called my ATT store a few days ago and they told me they cant do anything for me. So I called ATT and had them cancel my current line without charging me the ETF and I'm opening a new line today to get the 199/299 price. It's annoying that I have to change my number but for $200 it's worth it.

def not rude at all -- cs rep i spoke with said there is absolutely no policy against letting me pay the 499 today. he tried to get in touch with store himself to have them put 1 aside for me.

I am going to try an apple store at lunch time and just pay the 175 to cancel it and sign up again if they insist i cant upgrade today. 200 dollars off the phone is better deal anyways

CS said they cant swap numbers between contracts when i called -- want to try yourself and let us know!?

On the phone right now...

Hilarious - this CSR was trying to convince me that the 199/299 price was ONLY for new customers, and that if I were eligible for an upgrade, I would get the 399/499 price. I kindly told her 'I believe you're mistaken, maam. Please transfer me to a supervisor'. On hold now.

isn't it amazing all the different information coming for the ATT CSR's. Its as if ATT didn't train their people what the proper procedure was.

Can someone clarify the 'in the notes' eligibility? I'm an existing iPhone/AT&T customer, and my account page shows that I am eligible for an upgrade with a new two-year contract. Will I be a victim of this B.S.?

You should be fine. 'In the notes' eligibility means that your account shows you as not eligible, but there is a notes field that indicates that you actually are.

Anyone upgrade ineligible with no notes in their account making them eligible still in line after being checked by AT&T? Will they sell it to people who aren't eligible in anyway?

Is this issue just an issue with the "notes" specifically?

personally I say the blame of this sits on apple. They where the ones who made it sound like 199 was the price for everyone.

Update - Spoke to CSR Supervisor

Just got off the phone, here's the latest and greatest from the ATT Customer Service Supervisor:

According to him, they just got a directive this morning to not sell ANY upgrades to non-eligible existing customers (neither at the 399/499 price nor the no-commitment price of 599/699). He was under the impression that this was due to an inventory issue, but he wasn't sure. He thought maybe Apple was the one who issued it, but he again wasn't sure.

As for my specific situation, where I had the upgrade in the notes, he told me I couldn't really do anything about it right now, to 'hold tight' and call them again. GREAT =/

If anyone else has any insights, let me know. Otherwise, I'm just giving up for the day. This blows.

clarification on this problem:

If your account shows ineligible (even if there is a note that says you are okay to upgrade) the store told me you cannot upgrade until TOMORROW.

Today is my freakin birthday and I leave town at 5am tomorrow for airport. i want my d@mn 16gb white iphone!!!

I know, that's what the store told me as well. Though, I'm concerned that the story may change by the time I show up tomorow at the store, based on what ATT Corporate is saying now.

What are they saying now? I just checked and I'm not yet eligible for an upgrade, although my brother who bought an iphone last october and signed up for a new 2 year contract is eligible.:(

tysons and fair oaks both confirmed apple will sell to anyone regardless of upgrade status -- im afraid they might be out before i make it in though

finally got the whole scoop...

I just got off the phone with an ATT supervisor...

According to him, each store is handling the promotion differently. So, some stores will sell to "in the notes" upgrade eligible people, some won't. Its basically the luck of the draw...
